The development of Liver Research Cymru, a new partnership to increase hepatology research activity in Wales.

BACKGROUND: The incidence and severity of liver disease in the United Kingdom have increased over the last 20 years. Many patients present with advanced disease with limited treatment options and subsequently high morbidity and mortality. There was also a significant correlation with deprivation. Strategies that support the earlier detection of liver disease are paramount to reverse this trend. Despite significant progress in terms of novel pathways, the optimal strategy for early detection of liver disease remains unknown. Novel ways to tackle the deprivation gradient and reduce health inequa

Safety of human-AI cooperative decision-making within intensive care: A physical simulation study.

The safety of Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems is as much one of human decision-making as a technological question. In AI-driven decision support systems, particularly in high-stakes settings such as healthcare, ensuring the safety of human-AI interactions is paramount, given the potential risks of following erroneous AI recommendations. To explore this question, we ran a safety-focused clinician-AI interaction study in a physical simulation suite. Physicians were placed in a simulated intensive care ward, with a human nurse (played by an experimenter), an ICU data chart, a high-fidelity p

Forecasting dengue across Brazil with LSTM neural networks and SHAP-driven lagged climate and spatial effects.

BACKGROUND: Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne viral disease that poses significant health risks and socioeconomic challenges in Brazil, necessitating accurate forecasting across its 27 federal states. With the country's diverse climate and geographical spread, effective dengue prediction requires models that can account for both climate variations and spatial dynamics. This study addresses these needs by using Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural networks enhanced with SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) integrating optimal lagged climate variables and spatial influence from neighboring states

Combating pharmaceutical folklore: No alkyl-sulfonate impurities formed during the synthesis of sulfonate salts.

Whilst an alcohol can be forced to react with a sulfonic acid, this reaction produces minimal ester conversion even under extreme conditions (anhydrous, very low pH) that bear no resemblance to the mild synthetic procedures typically used for the formation of sulfonate salts of basic drugs. The latter involve the addition of a molar equivalent of pharma-grade sulfonic acid to the base form of a drug substance (pKa ≥3.5), dissolved or suspended in an alcohol solvent, normally ethanol (pKa -2). All added acid is neutralized, and so there is no potential for ester formation. Many drug-substance b

Science-informed Policy Making for Protecting People and the Environment from Radiation.

The process to arrive at the radiation protection practices of today to protect workers, patients, and the public, including sensitive populations, has been a long and deliberative one. This paper presents an overview of the US Environmental Protection Agency's (US EPA) responsibility in protecting human health and the environment from unnecessary exposure to radiation. The origins of this responsibility can be traced back to early efforts, a century ago, to protect workers from x rays and radium. The system of radiation protection we employ today is robust and informed by the latest scientifi

Creating a Culturally Safe Online Data Collection Instrument to Measure Vaccine Confidence Among Indigenous Youth: Indigenous Consensus Method.

BACKGROUND: Participating in surveys can shape the perception of participants related to the study topic. Administering a vaccine hesitancy questionnaire can have negative impacts on participants' vaccine confidence. This is particularly true for online and cross-cultural data collection because culturally safe health education to correct misinformation is typically not provided after the administration of an electronic survey. OBJECTIVE: To create a culturally safe, online, COVID-19 vaccine confidence survey for Indigenous youth designed to collect authentic, culturally relevant data of thei

Information preferences of patients with chronic blood cancer: A qualitative investigation.

BACKGROUND: Haematological malignancies (blood cancers) often follow chronic trajectories that can span many months or years. Management of these diseases typically involves periods of 'Watch & Wait', whereby patients are monitored by the hospital and only treated at progression, if or when this occurs, which might be never or on multiple occasions. Such remitting-relapsing pathways are unpredictable and can cause anxiety and distress. This study aimed to generate evidence about information preferences, with a view to underpinning future patient-facing resources; potentially mitigating psycho-

The current status of neglected tropical diseases in Japan: A scoping review.

Little attention has been paid to neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) in high-income countries and no literature provides an overview of NTDs in Japan. This scoping review aims to synthesize the latest evidence and information to understand epidemiology of and public health response to NTDs in Japan. Using three academic databases, we retrieved articles that mentioned NTDs in Japan, written in English or Japanese, and published between 2010 and 2020. Websites of key public health institutions and medical societies were also explored. From these sources of information, we extracted data that wer
