Drug Coated Balloon in Young Patients With ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction: A Viable Treatment Option?

This clinical case highlights the safety and feasibility of drug coated balloon (DCB) angioplasty in a very young patients presenting with STEMI (ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction) to avoid long-term complications associated with stent implantation, which still amount to 1%-2%. We successfully treated a 25 years old patient with occluded right coronary artery (RCA) with DCB after careful lesion preparation. Moreover, in a control angiogram 7 weeks later the RCA was patent with substantial lumen enlargement of 0.4 mm (RAO projection) to almost 2 mm (LAO projection) in a very short period of ti

Exploring the effects of cannabidiol encapsulation in liposomes on their physicochemical properties and biocompatibility.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is recognized for its therapeutic properties in various conditions. However, CBD's limited water solubility and sensitivity to environmental stresses hinder its efficacy and bioavailability. Encapsulation in drug delivery systems, particularly liposomes, offers a promising solution. This study aims to prepare CBD-containing liposomes using commercially used lipids distearoyl phosphatidylcholine (DSPC) and dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine (DPPC), and 1,2 distearoyl-sn-glycero-3 phosphoethanolamine-N-[carbonyl-amino(polyethylene glycol)-4300] (ammonium salt) (DSPE-PEG) and to pe

A pharmacokinetic comparison between three drug delivery devices in porcine coronary arteries.

BACKGROUND: Catheter-based drug delivery systems have evolved in percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI). Drug-coated balloons (DCBs) deliver agents to obstructive atherosclerotic lesions without permanent implants, but their pharmacokinetic profiles vary and may affect efficacy and safety. METHOD: Twenty-seven Yucatan Miniature Swine underwent treatment with SEL-SEB (SELUTION SLR™), MT-SCB (MagicTouch™), or EES (XIENCE™) in the right coronary or left circumflex arteries. Drug levels were measured in treated arteries and downstream myocardium at 7, 60, and 90 days. MT-SCB samples were extra

Crosslinker-free silk fibroin/κ-carrageenan bioinks incorporating RGD-functionalized, cell-laden microcarriers for 3D cartilage bioprinting: Formulation and cytocompatibility.

One of the key challenges in 3D bioprinting is developing bioinks that ensure both structural integrity and biocompatibility. This study introduces a novel strategy that combines microcarrier technology with 3D bioprinting to improve cell viability and mechanical strength without using toxic crosslinkers, focusing on cartilage tissue engineering. Poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) microcarriers (∼100 μm) were functionalized with RGD peptides to enhance cell attachment and seeded with ATDC5 chondroprogenitor cells. These were incorporated into bioinks composed of silk fibroin (SF, 2

3D-printed TPMS-structured hybrid PLA/MgTiO3 scaffolds: Synergizing bioactivity and antibacterial performance for bone regeneration.

Bone repair and tissue engineering require biomaterials that offer both mechanical stability and biocompatibility. Titanium is renowned for its mechanical durability but has limited bioactivity, whereas magnesium offers high bioactivity but degrades too quickly. This study develops a novel hybrid scaffold using fused filament fabrication (FFF) to combine polylactic acid (PLA) with magnesium titanate (MgTiO3). This approach aims to integrate the benefits of both materials into a PLA/MgTiO3 scaffold structured with TPMS. The research focuses on a detailed analysis of the scaffold's mechanical, t

Reduction of inflammation and improvement of skin tissue repair using biomaterials composed of hydroxyapatite and chitosan associated to conditioned media derived from dental pulp stem cells.

INTRODUCTION: Inflammatory skin diseases, including dermatitis, are characterized by uncontrolled inflammatory responses that affect approximately 20 % of the global population. Recent therapies primarily focus on inhibition rather than regulating abnormal inflammatory response, which can induce a series of secondary side effects and drug resistance in long-term treatment. In this context, advanced therapy products based on mesenchymal stem cells are promising due to their influence on tissue regeneration. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate skin healing in rats induced to manifest dermatitis and treated

Bone Tissue Engineering With Chitosan, Carbon Nanotubes, and Hydroxyapatite Biomaterials Enriched With Mesenchymal Stem Cells: A Radiographic and Histological Evaluation in a Sheep Model Undergoing Ostectomy (Bone Tissue Engineering in a Sheep Model).

Comminuted fractures associated with tissue loss can adversely affect bone regeneration. Biomaterials enriched with mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) employed for supporting osteosynthesis and potentiating osteoconduction are necessary to fill these bone defects. Natural compound biomaterials, similar to bone tissue, have been extensively tested in animal models for clinical use. Bone tissue engineering studies have used critical-size defects in ovine tibia monitored by imaging and histological examinations to evaluate the regenerative process. This study aimed to monitor the regenerative process

Odanacatib Coating Supports Osseointegration of Implants: A Preclinical Study.

INTRODUCTION: Odanacatib (ODN), a cathepsin K inhibitor, is a drug that reduces bone resorption while preserving bone formation. ODN was initially developed for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis, but further development as a systemic medication has been discontinued. Here, we propose ODN as a topical treatment, the coating of dental implants, to achieve an anabolic shift of early osseointegration. MATERIAL AND METHODS: To this aim, we have coated double acid etching titanium implants (SLA) with and without ODN dispersed in a simulated body fluid (SBF). The implants were inserted in

Production of Polyvinyl Alcohol/Amoxicillin - Chitosan/Collagen Hybrid Bilayer Membranes for Regeneration of Gingival Tissues.

Periodontal diseases, if untreated, can cause gum recession and tooth root exposure, resulting in infection and irreversible damage. Traditional treatments using autologous grafts are painful and often result in postoperative complications. Scaffolds offer a less invasive alternative, promoting cell proliferation and healing without additional surgery, thus enhancing comfort for patients and doctors. This study developed Chitosan (Chit)/Collagen (Col) film surfaces and drug-loaded Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA)/Amoxicillin (AMX) nanofibers using solvent casting and electrospinning methods, respective

Biodegradable chitin nanofiber-alginate dialdehyde hydrogel: An injectable, self-healing scaffold for anti-tumor drug delivery.

Injectable hydrogels fabricated from natural polymers have attracted increasing attentions for their potential in biomedical application owing to the biocompatibility and biodegradability. A new class of natural polymer based self-healing hydrogel is constructed through dynamic covalent bonds. The injectable self-healing hydrogels are fabricated by introducing alginate aldehyde to form Schiff base bonds with the chitin nanofibers. These hydrogels demonstrate excellent self-healing properties, injectability, and pH-responsive sol-gel transition behaviors. As a result, they can serve as carriers

A novel chitosan-peptide system for cartilage tissue engineering with adipose-derived stromal cells.

The natural healing process of cartilage injuries often fails to fully restore the tissue's biological and mechanical functions. Cartilage grafts are costly and require surgical intervention, often associated with complications such as intraoperative infection and rejection by the recipient due to ischemia. Novel tissue engineering technologies aim to ideally fill the cartilage defect to prevent disease progression or regenerate damaged tissue. Despite many studies on designing biocompatible composites to stimulate chondrogenesis, only few focus on peptides and carriers that promote stem cell

Natural Hydrogels Support Kidney Organoid Generation and Promote In Vitro Angiogenesis.

To date, strategies aiming to modulate cell to extracellular matrix (ECM) interactions during organoid derivation remain largely unexplored. Here renal decellularized ECM (dECM) hydrogels are fabricated from porcine and human renal cortex as biomaterials to enrich cell-to-ECM crosstalk during the onset of kidney organoid differentiation from human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs). Renal dECM-derived hydrogels are used in combination with hPSC-derived renal progenitor cells to define new approaches for 2D and 3D kidney organoid differentiation, demonstrating that in the presence of these biomater

pH-Responsive antibacterial metal-phenolic network coating on hernia meshes.

Polypropylene (PP) mesh is widely used in hernioplasty, but it is prone to contamination by pathogenic bacteria. Here, we present an infection microenvironment-responsive metal-phenolic network (MPN) coating, which is made up of Cu2+ and tannic acid (TA) (referred to as CT coating), and is fabricated on PP meshes by layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly. The CT coating provided a robust protection for the PP mesh from pathogenic bacterial infection in a pH-responsive manner due to the pH-responsive disassembly kinetics of MPN complexes. Moreover, the PP meshes with ten CT coating cycles (PP-CT(10)) ex
