Chinamhora, Zimbabwe is an area of known endemic goiter and iodine deficiency. Out of 211 primary school children living in the area who had been recruited for a study of the effects of iodine administration, 121 were randomly selected for audiometric testing. All had normal hearing. One further child already noted to have hearing difficulties was tested and found to have fairly severe bilateral nerve deafness, although this was unlikely to have been due to endemic cretinism. In two independently conducted randomised studies, the therapeutic effects of the low-molecular weight plasma expander dextran 40 (Thomaedex 40) and 6% hydroxyethyl starch 40/05 (Expafusin) in cases of sudden deafness and acute acoustic trauma were compared. Diagnosis of hearing impairment is possible during the first days of life. Hearing tests are noninvasive and should not be delayed when hearing loss is suspected. Among children's hearing impairments, conductive hearing loss is the most frequent; it is generally acquired and reversible. The effects of occupational exposure to noise was analysed among operators of agricultural tractors (n = 172). The assessment was based on a parameter called 'noise immission level' (dose connected with the period of employment). The study showed that the correlation between hearing loss and noise immission dose was stronger than that between hearing loss and the period of employment. At the Otolaryngological Clinic, Faculty Hospital Bratislava since 1971 to 1987 673 microsurgical operations on the stapes were made in patients with otosclerosis, incl. 73 using the method of stapedotomy and interposition of a teflon piston. The method was very successful. Hearing improved in 91.7% of the patients. In no instance marked deterioration of hearing or deafness developed.
