Contact allergy to lidocaine.

Two cases of contact allergy to lidocaine are reported. They also reacted to chemically related anesthetics of the amide type: one to bupivacaine, mepivacaine and prilocaine and the other to mepivacaine only. The patients also reacted to the chemically nonrelated cincaine, an anesthetic of the ester type. The lidocaine metabolites o-toluidine and mxylidine gave negative reactions.

VITAMIN D IN PATIENTS WITH INFLAMMATORY SKIN DISEASES.

In search for the ways to cure and improve skin condition of patients with inflammatory skin diseases, vitamin D supplementation has been shown to be useful, primarily due to its effects on a number of skin functions, e.g., keratinocyte proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis, maintenance of the epidermal barrier, and regulation of immune processes in the skin, among others. Vitamin D is essential for good general health and healthy skin, but deficiency can occur due to various factors that result in increased time spent indoors and limited sunlight exposure, such as geography (place of r

Differential Diagnosis of the Swollen Red Eyelid.

The swollen red eyelid is a common presentation in primary care. An understanding of the anatomy of the orbital region can guide care. Factors that guide diagnosis and urgency of care include acute vs. subacute onset of symptoms, presence or absence of pain, identifiable mass within the eyelid vs. diffuse lid swelling, and identification of vision change or ophthalmoplegia. Superficial skin processes presenting with swollen red eyelid include vesicles of herpes zoster ophthalmicus; erythematous irritation of contact dermatitis; raised, dry plaques of atopic dermatitis; and skin changes of mali

Stress and the skin.

Emotional stress can affect, reveal or even exacerbate a number of skin disorders including psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, pruritus, alopecia areata, lichen planus, seborrheic dermatitis, rosacea or urticaria, although the direct pathophysiologic link between stress factors and cutaneous disease manifestation remains unclear. However, there is an increasing evidence that stress influences disease processes and contributes to the inflammation through modulating hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and releasing neuropeptides, neurotrophins, lymphokines and other chemical mediators from nerve endi

Food allergy.

Food allergy is defined by a specific sensitization against food allergens which is associated with a clinical reaction. Immediate reactions are most common and the skin is most often involved in food allergy. Most food allergies are IgE-mediated although eczema reactions in atopic dermatitis and in hematogenous contact dermatitis to foods can be mediated by specific T-lymphocytes. Only few foods are responsible for the majority of most reactions in childhood. In adults up to 60% of all food allergic reactions are due to cross reactions between foods and inhalative allergens. A stepwise proced

Differential diagnosis of the swollen red eyelid.

The differential diagnosis of eyelid erythema and edema is broad, ranging from benign, self-limiting dermatoses to malignant tumors and vision-threatening infections. A definitive diagnosis usually can be made on physical examination of the eyelid and a careful evaluation of symptoms and exposures. The finding of a swollen red eyelid often signals cellulitis. Orbital cellulitis is a severe infection presenting with proptosis and ophthalmoplegia; it requires hospitalization and intravenous antibiotics to prevent vision loss. Less serious conditions, such as contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis…

Natural advances in eczema care.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic relapsing dermatitis characterized by increased transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and subjective symptoms of pruritus, inflammation, skin sensitivity, and dryness. AD is a frequent issue for individuals of color, though it may be underrecognized. Therapy for AD is based on reducing pruritus and inflammation, and normalizing skin surface lipids, particularly ceramides. Topical corticosteroids are the gold-standard treatment for controlling disease flares, but a variety of active natural ingredients can be used adjunctively to help control itch, inflammation, a

Allergy-Related Symptoms Are Poorly Predicted by IgE and Skin Prick Testing in Early Life.

INTRODUCTION: In childhood, the so-called allergic march involves progression from IgE sensitization to allergy-related symptoms. Both IgE sensitization and relevant clinical symptoms are required for the diagnosis of allergy, but concordance between test results and clinical symptoms varies greatly, creating challenges for the diagnostics and for the prediction of outcomes. We assessed the prevalence of IgE sensitization and allergy symptoms, concordance between 2 IgE sensitization testing methods, and predictive value of these tests in relation to clinical symptoms in young Finnish children.

Can human allergy drug fexofenadine, an antagonist of histamine (H1) receptor, be used to treat dog and cat? Homology modeling, docking and molecular dynamic Simulation of three H1 receptors in complex with fexofenadine.

Fexofenadine, a potent antagonist to human histamine 1 (H1) receptor, is a non-sedative third generation antihistamine that is widely used to treat various human allergic conditions such as allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis and atopic dermatitis. Encouragingly, it's been successfully used to treat canine atopic dermatitis, this supports the notion that it might have a great potential for treating other canine allergic conditions and other mammal pets such as dog. Regrettably, while there is a myriad of studies conducted on the interactions of antihistamines with human H1 receptor, the similar
