Multinational investigation of a Salmonella Umbilo outbreak reveals rocket salad and baby spinach as the likely infection vehicles, Europe, 2024.

A food-borne outbreak with about 200 Salmonella Umbilo cases occurred mainly between July and September 2024 in several European countries. Collaborative work between outbreak teams in Germany, Austria and Denmark, including epidemiological and microbiological investigations, allowed to rapidly identify rocket salad as the likely infection vehicle. Salmonella Umbilo was detected in rocket salad, and later in baby spinach. The food isolates and clinical outbreak strain were genetically closely related. Both food items originated from the same company in Italy.

Emergence of novel ST1299 vanA lineages as possible cause for the striking rise of vancomycin resistance among invasive strains of Enterococcus faecium at a German university hospital.

The proportion of VREfm among all Enterococcus faecium isolated from blood cultures in German hospitals has increased in the period 2015-2020 from 11.9% to 22.3% with a country-wide spread of the clonal lineage ST117/CT71 vanB. In this study, we provided useful information about the genetic diversity of invasive strains of E. faecium. Moreover, our findings confirm the nosocomial spread of novel ST1299 vanA lineages, which recently had a rapid expansion in Austria and the south-eastern part of Germany.

[Indications, risk factors, specialities and after-care of surgical treatment for cardiac and thoracic vascular diseases].

Despite a known high risk and complexity in the operative therapy of cardio-thoracic patients, cardiac surgery is medical routine activity today. The German Society of Cardiothoracic Surgery regularly analyses the more than 100.000 cases a year in Germany. Fixing procedural statics, it gives us the knowledge of individual risk factors and success rates for surgical therapy of our patients.Following we want to shortly summarize indications, risk factors, specialities and after-care of surgical treatment for cardiac and thoracic vascular diseases in adults.

Abiotrophia defectiva endophthalmitis with retinal involvement and infiltrative keratitis: case report and review of the literature.

We report the exceptional case of a severe intraocular Abiotrophia defectiva infection which developed after cataract surgery. Retinal involvement as a complication of A. defectiva endophthalmitis or the combination of acute-onset endophthalmitis with infiltrative keratitis caused by this pathogen has not been described. Moreover, our report represents the first documented ocular A. defectiva infection in Germany. A. defectiva was identified using biotyping and 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequence analysis. Despite vigorous antimicrobial therapy and repeated ocular surgery, visual outcome was poor.
