BACKGROUND: Optical coherence elastography derived from optical coherence tomography for measuring soft tissue and organ compliance, holds promise in respirology but remains largely exploratory.
METHODS: The airway lumen area (Ai) was measured by endobronchial optical coherence tomography in control subjects (n = 4), and pulmonary fibrosis (n = 8) while airway pressure (Paw) increased from 0-20 cm H2O. Airway compliance (AC) and airway specific compliance (ASC) were derived from the Paw vs. Ai curves. Evaluate correlations among Ai, AC, ASC, and lung function parameters.

Osteophytes are pointed or beaked osseous outgrowths at the margins of articular surfaces that are often associated with degenerative changes of articular cartilage. They are the most common aspect of osteoarthritis and they infrequently cause symptoms by compression of the adjacent anatomic structures, such as nerves, vessels, bronchi, and esophagus. Bronchial anthracofibrosis is a rare disease characterised by chronic bronchial inflammation, with bronchoscopic findings showing dark anthracotic pigmentation on the bronchial mucosa in conjunction with bronchial narrowing or obliteration which causes stenosis of the airways. We describe our experience in two patients with severe bronchial anthracofibrosis and discuss a novel treatment of the stenotic bronchi using endobronchial stents.

Bronchobiliary fistula is defined as the passage of bile in the bronchi. The presence of bronchobiliary fistula in patient with cirrhosis is extremely rare. Management of these fistulas is often very difficult and can be associated with high morbidity and mortality. We are presenting a patient with ethanol related cirrhosis and biliptysis in whom a diagnosis of bronchobiliary fistula was made. A review of the literature including diagnosis and management is performed.

Mounier-Kuhn syndrome is a rare condition characterized by marked dilation of the trachea and main bronchi resulting in bronchiectasis and emphysema. We report a case in which a patient underwent successful double lung transplantation for COPD that was found on pathologic examination of the explanted lungs to be Mounier Kuhn syndrome. To our knowledge this is the first case reporting lung transplantation in this syndrome.

Both the bronchi are often severely squeezed by the dilated pulmonary artery in infants with ventricular septal defect and pulmonary hypertension. To relieve the considerable residual airway obstruction, the right pulmonary artery is translocated anteriorly to the ascending aorta concomitantly with the intracardiac repair. This technique is a useful procedure for infants with intractable respiratory failure caused by a dilated pulmonary artery.

The differential in growth is apparent between lobes within the lung as well as between the two lungs. Any catch-up has clearly not corrected the hypoplasia present at birth. In addition, the small size and distorted shape as well as the abnormal proportions between the trachea and between the two main bronchi point to further functional irregularities based on structural distortion.

Amongst the endothoracic forms of Wegener's granulomatosis, tracheal, bronchial and above all mediastinal localisations are unusual. Such a case having a bad outcome is reported here. Computed Tomography (TDM) was used to assess the extend of pulmonary parenchymal involvement. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) was superior to TDM for showing transmural infiltration of the tracheal and the origin of main bronchi.
