Predictive modeling of vocal biomarkers for the diagnosis of Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is among the two most prevalent neurodegenerative disorders (NDDs), affecting about 2-3% of individuals aged 65 and older. This NDD exhibits characteristic motor symptoms and several other non-motor features. Vocal deficits have been identified as one of the earliest quantifiable indicators of PD, which makes speech evaluation a viable, painless diagnostic instrument. We aim to apply machine learning (ML) models to vocal biomarkers for the early detection of PD, and use explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) techniques to interpret the predictions. The dataset is fr

Development and Validation of a Novel Nomogram Risk Prediction Model for In-Hospital Death Following Extended Aortic Arch Repair for Acute Type A Aortic Dissection.

BACKGROUND: Extended aortic arch repair (EAR) is increasingly adopted for treating acute type A aortic dissection (ATAAD). However, existing prediction models may not be suitable for assessing the in-hospital death risk in ATAAD patients undergoing EAR. This study aims to develop a comprehensive risk prediction model for in-hospital death following EAR based on patient's preoperative status and surgical data, which may contribute to identification of high-risk individuals and improve outcomes following EAR. METHODS: We reviewed clinical records of consecutive adult ATAAD patients undergoing E

Using machine learning and single nucleotide polymorphisms for improving rheumatoid arthritis risk Prediction in postmenopausal women.

Genetic factors contribute to 60-70% of the variability in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, few studies have used genetic variants to predict RA risk. This study aimed to enhance RA risk prediction by leveraging single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) through machine-learning algorithms, utilizing Women's Health Initiative data. We developed four predictive models: 1) based on common RA risk factors, 2) model 1 incorporating polygenic risk scores (PRS) with principal components, 3) model 1 and SNPs after feature reduction, and 4) model 1 and SNPs with kernel principal component analysis. Spinal cord injury impact on skin temperature regulation during graded exercise: metaheuristic data mining-based predictions.

People with spinal cord injury (SCI) show impaired thermoregulation during exercise, making skin temperature a noninvasive indicator. This study applies hybrid Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) models optimized with Ant Lion, Dragonfly, and Evolution Strategy algorithms to predict skin and core temperature dynamics during graded arm-crank exercise in 32 participants (16 SCI, 16 controls). The Dragonfly-optimized ELM achieved the highest accuracy (R² = 99.705, RMSE = 0.014) with no significant difference between predicted and measured core temperatures (p > 0.05). Estimation of patient-reported outcome measures based on features of knee joint muscle co-activation in advanced knee osteoarthritis.

Electromyography (EMG) is considered a potential predictive tool for the severity of knee osteoarthritis (OA) symptoms and functional outcomes. Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), such as the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) and visual analog scale (VAS), are used to determine the severity of knee OA. We aim to investigate muscle activation and co-contraction patterns through EMG from the lower extremity muscles of patients with advanced knee OA patients and evaluate the effectiveness of an interpretable machine-learning model to estimate the severi

A Hybrid Ensemble Approach for Early-Stage Diabetes Detection.

Diabetes has become a critical global health concern, particularly in regions where access to diagnostic facilities is limited. In this work, we propose a hybrid framework that combines extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) and deep neural networks (DNNs) for early-stage diabetes detection, using soft voting to generate the final ensemble predictions. The proposed framework was evaluated on two datasets: the widely used Diabetes UCI dataset and a newly collected dataset from Nepal. The ensemble method achieved 99% accuracy (ACC) with an area under the curve (AUC) of 1.00 on the Diabetes UCI data

Machine learning classification of emotional videos via autonomic arousal based on pupil diameters, electrodermal activity and heart rate.

We evaluated the ability of Electrodermal Activity (EDA), Heart Rate Variability (HRV), and Pupil Diameter (PD) to detect emotional states via machine learning to determine whether simple arousal metrics can distinguish complex emotional labels: Amusement, Awe, Disgust, Nurturant Love, and Sadness. In a laboratory session, participants (N = 47) selected the most appropriate emotional label out of five immediately after viewing 10 short videos. Classifications relied solely on the three psychophysiological measures and by applying three machine learning models: Support Vector Machine (SVM/SVC),

Integrating network analysis and machine learning to elucidate chemical-induced pancreatic toxicity in zebrafish embryos.

Zebrafish (Danio rerio) are a popular vertebrate model for high-throughput toxicity testing, serving as a model for embryonic development and disease etiology. However, standardized protocols using zebrafish tend to explore pathologies and behaviors at the organism level rather than at the organ-specific level. This study investigates the effects of chemical exposures on pancreatic function in whole-embryo zebrafish by integrating network analysis and machine learning, leveraging widely available datasets to probe an organ-specific effect. We compiled transcriptomics data for zebrafish exposed
