Phytochemical Profiling and Antiviral Activity of Green Sustainable Nanoparticles Derived from Maesa indica (Roxb.) Sweet against Human Coronavirus 229E.

Plant secondary metabolites are key components for new, safe and effective drugs. Ethanolic extract of Maesa indica Roxb. Sweet (ME) aerial parts were used for biosynthesis of sustainable green zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) with an average particle size 6.80 ± 1.47 nm and zeta potential -19.7 mV. Both transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction assay confirmed the hexagonal shape of ZnO NPs. Phenolic ingredients in ME were identified using LC-ESI-MS/MS-MRM revealing the identification of chlorogenic acid, gallic acid, caffeic acid, rutin, coumaric acid, vanillin, naringenin, qu…

Methane reduction by quercetin, tannic and salicylic acids: influence of molecular structures on methane formation and fermentation in vitro.

Plant secondary metabolites (PSMs) can potentially reduce ruminal methane formation. However, related to differences in their molecular structures, it is not yet clear what causes an anti-methanogenic effect. In an in vitro system simulating rumen fermentation, we investigated the impact of eight compounds with distinct chemical characteristics (gallic and salicylic acids, tannic acid, catechin, epicatechin, quercetin, rutin, and salicin) when added to a basal feed (maize silage) at a concentration of 12% of the feed dry matter. After 48 h of incubation in buffered rumen fluid, methane product

In Vitro Digestion Influences Bioactive Compound Profiles, Antioxidant Activity, and Free Amino Acid Release in Plant-Based Milk Alternatives.

This study evaluated the bioactive compounds, antioxidant activities, phenolic and flavonoid profiles, and amino acid composition of six plant-based milk alternatives (coconut, almond, cashew nut, soybean, peanut, and mung bean) and assessed their changes following in vitro digestion. Mung bean milk exhibited the highest total phenolic and flavonoid contents and antioxidant activity among all samples. Generally, enzymatic digestion significantly increased total phenolic content and antioxidant activity across all plant-based milks, with DPPH activity increasing approximately 2-4-fold, while to

Cytotoxic Activities of Some Cynipid (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae) Gall Extracts.

Natural products derived from plants are valuable sources of bioactive compounds with potential anticancer properties. This study primarily investigated the cytotoxic activities of gall extracts of Andricus caputmedusae (ACA), Andricus curtisii (ACU), and Andricus quercustozae (AQU) in human cancer cell lines (LNCaP, Caco-2, HeLa) and a non-cancerous cell line (HEK293). The phenolic compositions of the extracts were analyzed by LC-MS/MS to help interpret their biological effects. The extracts contained notable levels of shikimic acid, gallic acid, protocatechuic acid, and catechin, with AQU ex…

Macrophage-Targeted GSH-Depleting Nanocomplexes for Synergistic Chemodynamic Therapy/Gas Therapy/Immunotherapy of Intracellular Bacterial Infection.

Intracellular pathogens can survive inside the macrophages to protect themselves from eradication by the innate immune system and conventional antibiotics, resulting in severe bacterial infections. In this work, an antibiotic-free nanocomplex (HA/GA-Fe@NO-DON), exhibiting macrophage-targeted synergistic gas therapy (nitric oxide, NO)/chemodynamic therapy/immunotherapy, was reported. HA/GA-Fe nanoparticles were synthesized by the strong coordination interactions among carboxyl groups of hyaluronic acid (HA), polyphenol groups of gallic acid (GA), and Fe(II) ions. The hydrophobic glutathione (GS…

Adhesion and Cohesion Differences between Catechol- and Pyrogallol-Functionalized Chitosan.

Marine-inspired phenolic compounds that exhibit underwater adhesion are used as biomedical adhesives under wet conditions. While these applications mainly use catechol and pyrogallol moieties that contain different numbers of hydroxyl groups on their benzene rings, how this difference affects adhesion and cohesion is not well understood. Herein, the chitosan backbone is functionalized with catechol and pyrogallol at similar modification rates (to give chitosan-catechol (CS-CA) and chitosan-pyrogallol (CS-GA), respectively) and their interaction energies are compared by using a surface forces a

The impact of reductants on the catalytic efficiency of a lytic polysaccharide monooxygenase and the special role of dehydroascorbic acid.

Monocopper lytic polysaccharide monooxygenases (LPMOs) catalyse oxidative cleavage of glycosidic bonds in a reductant-dependent reaction. Recent studies indicate that LPMOs, rather than being O2 -dependent monooxygenases, are H2 O2 -dependent peroxygenases. Here, we describe SscLPMO10B, a novel LPMO from the phytopathogenic bacterium Streptomyces scabies and address links between this enzyme's catalytic rate and in situ hydrogen peroxide production in the presence of ascorbic acid, gallic acid and l-cysteine. Studies of Avicel degradation showed a clear correlation between the catalytic rate o…

Thermal sensing of syringic acid in food samples via molecularly imprinted polymers synthesized from bio-based deep eutectic solvents as monomers.

Sensing syringic acid in food samples is highly valuable in food quality control due to its health promoting effects. To this purpose, syringic acid MIPs aligning with green chemistry have been developed by employing a bio-based functional monomer as DES and ethanol-water as porogen. MIP was implemented into a low-cost thermal readout platform as functional layer utilizing carbon tape for deposition. The sensor was characterized using SEM, IR, TGA and laser diffraction and its performance was evaluated through loading assays with syringic acid solutions, selectivity studies using structural an

SCM-198 Alleviates Endometriosis by Suppressing Estrogen-ERα mediated Differentiation and Function of CD4+CD25+ Regulatory T Cells.

Background: Endometriosis (EMS), a typical endocrine immune disorder, associates with dramatically increased estrogen production and disorganized immune response in ectopic focus. Peritoneal regulatory T cells (Tregs) expansion in women with EMS and their pathogenic role attributable to endometriotic immunotolerance has been reported. Whether local high estrogen promotes EMS by discipling Tregs needs to be further explored. Up to date, there is no effective medicine for the treatment of EMS. SCM-198 is a synthetic leonurine with multiple physiological activities. Whether SCM-198 could regulate

A molecular docking study of EGCG and theaflavin digallate with the druggable targets of SARS-CoV-2.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by a novel positive-sense single-stranded RNA coronavirus called as SARS-CoV-2. This viral disease is known to infect the respiratory system, eventually leading to pneumonia. Crystallographic studies of the viral structure reveal its mechanism of infection as well as active binding sites and the druggable targets as scope for treatment of COVID-19. HYPOTHESIS: The role of tea polyphenols in prophylaxis and treatment of COVID-19 was established in this study. STUDY DESIGN: Molecular docking interactions of tea polyphenols with some of the p

Gallate Contact Dermatitis: Product Update and Systematic Review.

Allergic contact dermatitis related to cosmetic use can result from allergens not routinely evaluated by standard patch test protocols. Propyl, octyl, and dodecyl gallates are commonly used antioxidant preservatives with reports of associated allergic contact dermatitis in the literature. The objectives of this review were to investigate the role of gallates in allergic contact dermatitis and to explore products containing these preservatives. A systematic review of the literature through April 2016 was performed to explore cases of reported gallate allergy. Food and cosmetic product databases
