Design of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) for photocatalytic CO2 reduction under metal-free conditions.

The photoreduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) into solar fuels necessitates efficient photocatalysts to overcome the energy barrier for effective CO2RR. Consequently, the photocatalyst must possess an appropriate band gap and optimal CO2 reduction potential, and facilitate efficient charge separation and migration. In this context, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) show immense potential as efficient photocatalysts for light-driven CO2 transformation and have been extensively studied. In this feature article, we review recent developments in COF-based photocatalysts for CO2 reduction into solar

Hot Interband Carrier Exploitation in a Ru/MOF Schottky Junction for Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction.

Visible light-driven photocatalytic reduction of CO2 to value-added fuels and chemicals has attracted extensive interest for decades. However, the emerging photocatalysis paradigm through an interband transition in non-plasmonic metals remains challenging. Herein, a new strategy, namely hot carrier exploitation is demonstrated, for highly efficient CO2 reduction through the interband transition in non-plasmonic Ru nanoparticles (NPs). The Ru NPs are integrated with a metal-organic framework (MOF) to construct a Schottky junction of Ru@MOF-808, which features a directed injection of hot interba

Design of Pyridine Tetracarboxylate-Bridged Polyoxometalate-Based Metal-Organic Framework for Photocatalytic Oxidative Amine Coupling and α-Amino C(sp3)-H Arylation.

The utilization of light as a sustainable driver for organic transformations has emerged as a key strategy in green chemistry, particularly for the atom-economic synthesis of high-value compounds. In this paper, a novel three-dimensional polyoxometalate-based metal-organic framework (POMOF) [H4Cu3(PMDP)1.5(GeW12O40)]·3.5H2O (GeW12-Cu-PMDP) was synthesized using a hydrothermal method to assemble the copper salt, Keggin-type polyanion [GeW12O40]4- and 1,1'-(1,4-phenylenebis(methylene))bis(3,5-dicarboxypyridin-1-ium) (PMDP). Photocatalytic evaluations show that GeW12-Cu-PMDP exhibits exceptional

Optical detection of single sub-15 nm objects using elastic scattering strong coupling.

Metallic nano-objects play crucial roles in diverse fields, including biomedical imaging, nanomedicine, spectroscopy, and photocatalysis. Nano-objects smaller than 15  nm exhibit extremely low scattering cross-sections, posing a significant challenge for optical detection. An approach to enhance optical detection is to exploit nonlinearity of strong coupling regime, especially for elastic scattering, which is universal to all objects. However, there is still no observation of the strong coupling of elastic light scattering from nano-objects. Here, we demonstrate the strong coupling of elastic

Highly efficient catalytic Fenton-Like reactions of bimetallic Fe/Cu chelated on radiation functionalized nonwoven fabric for pollutant control.

A remarkably efficient and affordable Fe/Cu bimetallic catalyst featuring a substantial light energy utilization and compatibility with a sizable substrate was developed for Fenton-like reactions aimed at pollutant control. Specifically, a novel strategy was employed to synthesize high-density metal sites (Fe:Cu ≈ 3:1) robustly embedded on polyethylene/polyethylene terephthalate nonwoven fabric (PE/PET NWF) via radiation-induced graft polymerization (RIGP) and subsequent chemical modification, labeled as Fe/Cu-PPAO. Its high effectiveness was demonstrated by degrading 50 mg/L of tetracycline h

Highly efficient hydrogen production and selective CO2 reduction by the C3N5 photocatalyst using only visible light.

The production of energy sources by metal-free photocatalysts based on graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has garnered substantial attention. In this study, nitrogen-rich carbon nitride (C3N5) was successfully synthesized through the thermal polycondensation of 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole. The structural and physical characterization has suggested that a portion of the triazine rings, which constitute the structural framework of g-C3N4, may be substituted with five-membered rings in C3N5. Furthermore, the polymerization of C3N5 proceeded more extensively than that of g-C3N4 from melamine precursors.

Visible Light Accelerates Cr(III) Release and Oxidation in Cr-Fe Chromite Residues: An Overlooked Risk of Cr(VI) Reoccurrence.

The reduced chromite ore processing residue (rCOPR) deposited in environments is susceptible to surrounding factors and causes reoccurrence of Cr(VI). However, the impact of natural sunlight on the stability of rCOPR is still unexplored. Herein, we investigated the dissolution and transformation behaviors of Cr(III)-Fe(III) hydroxide, a typical Cr(III)-containing component in rCOPR, under visible light. At acidic conditions, the release rate of Cr(III) under illumination markedly increased, up to 7 times higher than that in the dark, yet no Cr(VI) was produced. While at basic conditions, only

Recent modernization in g-C3N4/MoS2 derived heterojunctions for photocatalytic applications.

Photocatalysis using semiconductors is a key approach for directly utilizing, transforming, and storing renewable solar energy and it has important implications for environmental applications. g-C3N4 is a prominent semiconductor photocatalyst with advantageous structural, electrical, optical, and chemical properties. However, it suffers from issues like high recombination rates of photogenerated charge carriers, low quantum efficiency, limited surface area and poor light absorption. These limitations can be mitigated by creating heterojunctions with complementary materials. As a transition met

Decontamination of Cr(VI) and tetracycline hydrochloride by Bi@NH2-MIL-88B-enhanced photocatalytic electron-rich microenvironment and its internal mechanism.

Non-precious metals that demonstrate surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effects have attracted considerable attention due to their ability to enhance the photocatalytic degradation of unexpected pollutants in water. Here, the interfacial charge transfer and improvement of the Bi-metal center are accomplished through in-situ synthesis, along with a comprehensive analysis of the catalytic activity and mechanism of the Bi-metal center. On this basis, the response surface method (RSM) and statistical analysis are used to evaluate the performance of Cr(VI). The adequacy results of the models showed th

Enhancement of CO2 Hydrogenation to Light Olefins by Developing a Higher Alcohols-Intermediate Route.

CO2 hydrogenation to light olefins generally occurs via Fischer-Tropsch (FT) synthesis and methanol-intermediate routes. However, these two routes usually give low light olefin yields, although large numbers of catalysts have been fabricated. This results from the limitation of the Anderson-Schulz-Flory (ASF) law or the formation of initial C-C bond and hydrocarbon pool (HCP) species. To overcome these problems, a higher alcohol-intermediate route is developed here as these alcoholic products are rapidly dehydrated to light olefins. The designed Na-CuFeOx/H-GeAPO-34 composite shows CO2 convers

Achievements of Polish doctors in gastrodiaphanoscopy at the turn of the 19(th) and 20(th) centuries.

Diaphanoscopy/transillumination, the method of shining a bright light through tissues, was devised in the mid-19(th) century and developed after the invention of the light bulb by T.A. Edison. Benjamin Milliot was the first to examine the stomach by means of an incandescent platinum wire. The experiments conducted by Max Einhorn using a device consisting of a Nelaton catheter with an inserted light bulb, were valuable. In Poland the method of gastrodiaphanoscopy was popularized by Teodor Heryng, Mikołaj Rejchman and by Warsaw doctors. They used a diaphanoscope consisting of a gutta-percha prob

Plasmonic Pd-Sb nanosheets for photothermal CH4 conversion to HCHO and therapy.

Photothermal catalysis effectively increases catalytic activity by using the photothermal effect of metal nanomaterials; however, the combination of strong light absorption and high catalytic performance remains a challenge. Here, we demonstrate hexagonal ~5-nanometer-thick palladium antimony (chemical formula as Pd8Sb3) nanosheets (NSs) that exhibit strong light absorption within full spectral and localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effects in the visible region. Such LSPR features lead to strong photothermal effects, and Pd8Sb3 NSs aqueous dispersion enables enhanced photothermal meth

Application of advanced oxidation processes for the treatment of cyanide containing effluent.

Batch experiments were carried out for the removal of cyanide in the effluent of plating industry by the application of advanced oxidation processes. Four systems with different modes of oxidation in combination of ultra violet (UV) light with hydrogen peroxide and/or ozone were investigated. Of all the applied systems, UV-light with two oxidants, i.e. O3 (32 mg min(-1)), and H2O2 (1.36 g l(-1)) was found successful in bringing down the amount of cyanide from 157.32 mg l(-1) to 1.0 mg l(-1), which is the limit set by the Ministry of Environment of Korea for cyanide-containing discharges. Copper(II), a Peculiar Metal Ion for Complexation With Monensin A Ionophore.

Monensin A transports Na+ ions through the cell membrane, but it is also able to bind divalent metal ions potentially influencing the biological activity of the ionophore. In line with our previous studies, here we explored interaction of the essential Cu(II) with monensinate A and suggested the types of coordination compounds formed. Circular dichroism (VIS- and NIR-CD), VIS light absorption, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopies, as well as electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) were utilized for identification and characterization of the complexes. Stimuli-Modulated Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) Reactivity toward a Three-Component Coupling Reaction.

Stimuli-responsive heterogeneous catalysis is a powerful concept that unites the possibility for in situ regulation of the reaction parameter space with the enhanced recyclability of solid-state platforms. The presented work reports the first example of a light-responsive heterogeneous catalyst for a three-component coupling reaction that relies on photochromic-molecule-directed modulation of the copper oxidation states in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) via a stimuli-responsive spiropyran derivative covalently integrated within a host scaffold. Hypochlorite-Driven Oxidative Dissolution Boosts Neurodevelopmental Toxicity of Cadmium Sulfide Nanoparticles in Zebrafish.

Metal elements in aquatic environments are often transformed into metal sulfide nanoparticles (MSNPs), which are generally considered less toxic due to their low solubility. However, emerging evidence suggests that the oxidative dissolution of MSNPs can lead to the release of toxic metal ions. Here, we investigated the neurodevelopmental toxicity of cadmium sulfide nanoparticles (CdSNPs) in zebrafish under environmentally relevant oxidative conditions induced by hypochlorite, a common disinfectant used in wastewater treatment. We observed that the dissolution of CdSNPs in hypochlorite solution
