Do housing-induced changes in brain activity cause stereotypic behaviours in laboratory mice?

Abnormal repetitive stereotypic behaviours (SBs) (e.g. pacing, body-rocking) are common in animals with poor welfare (e.g. socially isolated/in barren housing). But how (or even whether) poor housing alters animals' brains to induce SBs remains uncertain. To date, there is little evidence for environmental effects on the brain that also correlate with individual SB performance. Using female mice from two strains (SB-prone DBA/2s; SB-resistant C57/BL/6s), displaying two forms of SB (route-tracing; bar-mouthing), we investigated how housing (conventional laboratory conditions vs. well-resourced

Interleukin-13 Affects the Recovery Processes in a Mouse Model of Hemorrhagic Stroke with Bilateral Tibial Fracture.

As one form of stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is a fatal cerebrovascular disease, which has high morbidity and mortality and lacks effective medical treatment. Increased infiltration of inflammatory cytokines coupled with pyroptotic cell death is involved in the pathophysiological process of ICH. However, little is known about whether concomitant fracture patients have the same progression of inflammation and pyroptosis. Hence, we respectively established the mouse ICH model and ICH with bilateral tibial fracture model (MI) to explore the potential cross-talk between the above two inju

Oral cannabinoid for the prophylaxis of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting-a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) is a burdensome adverse event frequently associated with chemotherapy treatment of cancer. Evidence suggests that cannabinoid CB2 receptors are present in brainstem neurons, and thus, there may exist a role for cannabinoids to counter CINV. The aim of this paper is to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of the efficacy and safety of oral cannabinoids compared with other treatments as documented in randomized controlled trials (RCTs). METHODS: A literature search was conducted using Ovid MEDLINE up until December 31, 2018;

Corneal Tissue Engineering: An In Vitro Model of the Stromal-nerve Interactions of the Human Cornea.

Tissue engineering has gained substantial recognition due to the high demand for human cornea replacements with an estimated 10 million people worldwide suffering from corneal vision loss1. To address the demand for viable human corneas, significant progress in three-dimensional (3D) tissue engineering has been made2,3,4. These cornea models range from simple monolayer systems to multilayered models, leading to 3D full-thickness corneal equivalents2. However, the use of a 3D tissue-engineered cornea in the context of in vitro disease models studied to date lacks resemblance to the multilayered

Separability of motor imagery of the self from interpretation of motor intentions of others at the single trial level: an EEG study.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to investigate the separability of the neural correlates of 2 types of motor imagery, self and third person (actions owned by the participant himself vs. another individual). If possible this would allow for the development of BCI interfaces to train disorders of action and intention understanding beyond simple imitation, such as autism. METHODS: We used EEG recordings from 20 healthy participants, as well as electrocorticography (ECoG) in one, based on a virtual reality setup. To test feasibility of discrimination between each type of imagery at the single trial level, t

Bilateral tactile hypersensitivity and neuroimmune responses after spared nerve injury in mice lacking vasoactive intestinal peptide.

Vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) is one of the neuropeptides showing the strongest up-regulation in the nociceptive pathway after peripheral nerve injury and has been proposed to support neuropathic pain. Nevertheless, the story may be more complicated considering the known suppressive effects of the peptide on the immune reactivity of microglial cells, which have been heavily implicated in the onset and maintenance of pain after nerve injury. We here used mice deficient in VIP and the model of spared nerve injury, characterized by persistent tactile hypersensitivity. While tactile hypersen

Decreased frontal gyrification correlates with altered connectivity in children with autism.

The structural correlates of functional dysconnectivity in autism spectrum disorders (ASD) have been seldom explored, despite the fact that altered functional connectivity is one of the most frequent neuropathological observations in the disorder. We analyzed cerebral morphometry and structural connectivity using multi-modal imaging for 11 children/adolescents with ASD and 11 matched controls. We estimated regional cortical and white matter volumes, as well as vertex-wise measures of cortical thickness and local Gyrification Index (lGI). Diffusion Tensor Images (DTI) were used to measure Fract

Perfusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging in acute intracerebral hemorrhage at baseline and during the 1st and 2nd week: a longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Ischemic penumbra has been suggested as a contributing mechanism to secondary neuronal injury in intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). Preliminary data suggest the presence of perihematomal hypoperfusion within the first hours after acute ICH. Our objective was to elucidate perfusion changes in the perihematomal region over time using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). METHODS: Two perfusion-weighted MRIs were studied prospectively in 18 ICH patients. All patients had an acute perfusion-weighted MRI within 24 h of the onset of symptoms (time 0); 11 patients had a follow-up st

Therapeutic targeting of alternative splicing caused by a lethal noncoding structural variant in X-linked dystonia parkinsonism.

X-linked Dystonia-Parkinsonism (XDP) is a lethal adult-onset neurodegenerative disorder that exhibits features of dystonia and parkinsonism and is exclusively associated with a causal founder haplotype that is indigenous to the Philippines and affects Filipino males. Using patient-specific fibroblasts, neural stem cells (NSC), and other neuronal models, we discovered that cryptic alternative splicing caused by a novel SINE-VNTR-Alu (SVA) mobile element insertion into intron 32 of TAF1 is a mechanistic hallmark of XDP. We leveraged postmortem brain samples from an XDP-specific brain bank to dem

Amyloid-Induced Network Resilience and Collapse in Alzheimer's Disease: Insights From Computational Modeling.

Alzheimer's disease is marked by progressive synaptic loss and cognitive decline, with amyloid-beta accumulation playing a central pathological role. Although the molecular effects of amyloid-beta are well-characterized, the cascade from local synaptic dysfunction to large-scale network collapse remains poorly understood. We present a biophysically grounded computational model that integrates small-world network topology, Izhikevich neuron dynamics, short-term plasticity, and amyloid-beta-induced synaptic pruning to investigate how amyloid burden degrades functional brain connectivity over tim

Inverse Correlation Between Nesfatin-1 and Ghrelin O-Acyltransferase (GOAT) in Adolescents with Epilepsy: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Nesfatin-1 and ghrelin O-acyltransferase (GOAT) have established roles in metabolic regulation and neuronal excitability, yet their relationship in epilepsy remains conflicted. This cross-sectional study compared 22 adolescent epilepsy patients (13.1 ± 2.0 years; 11 women/11 men) with 20 age-matched healthy controls (HCs) (12.3 ± 2.2 years; 8 women/12 men). Serum and salivary nesfatin-1 and GOAT levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay; Spearman's rank correlation assessed inter-neuropeptide relationships. Serum nesfatin-1 was markedly elevated in patients with epilepsy compar

Mu or alpha? Source decomposition for social perception analysis.

The sensorimotor mu rhythm is widely used as an electroencephalography (EEG) marker of mirror neuron system activity during action and emotion perception. However, its frequency overlap with occipital-parietal alpha raises concerns that sensor-level measurements over central electrodes may be contaminated by visual alpha activity. Here, we directly compared conventional sensor-level analyses with independent component analysis (ICA)-based source separation to examine how methodological choices affect interpretations of mu dynamics during emotional face perception. Thirty-three participants vie

Structural brain lesions and action observation therapy outcomes in unilateral cerebral palsy: an exploratory study.

INTRODUCTION: Unilateral cerebral palsy (UCP) results from early brain injury, leading to motor impairments primarily affecting one upper limb. Action Observation Therapy (AOT), which engages the mirror neuron system to enhance motor function, represents a promising rehabilitative approach. However, its efficacy in UCP has been inconsistent across studies, possibly due to methodological differences or individual variability in brain damage. This observational longitudinal study within an intervention group aimed to explore whether structural brain lesions are associated with changes in motor d

Loss of Postnatal Retinal Input Perturbs Cortical Lamination in the Developing Ferret Visual Cortex.

Neuroanatomical development of the visual system is influenced by activity-dependent processes. Removal of retinal input early in development in animal model experiments reproduces several structural characteristics of the primary visual cortex in humans who have been blinded early in life. Yet, many questions regarding how the loss of retinal activity affects the organization and cellular composition of the visual cortex remain to be answered. Here, we report alterations to primary visual cortex development in ferrets over the postnatal day 20 (P20) to P38 age range that arise following bilat

Empathic Dimensions Influence Motor Resonance Magnitude During Transitive but Not Intransitive Action Observation: A Retrospective Investigation.

Background/Objectives: Empathy is essential for successful social functioning, mediating different aspects of social cognition in everyday life. An intriguing aspect is the involvement of empathy even in basic neural mechanisms of action perception, thanks to its association with the Mirror Neuron System (MNS). The present retrospective study explores whether individual differences in cognitive and affective empathy, measured by the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) questionnaire, can predict motor resonance-the enhancement of motor cortex reactivity during the observation of biological mov

Effects of Kisspeptin on rabbit ovulation: a comprehensive study of ovulatory, endocrine and histological response.

Mammalian reproductive function is regulated by hypothalamic neurons that secrete Kisspeptin (Kp), a neuropeptide that stimulates gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) secretion, triggering pituitary gonadotrophins (LH and FSH) and gonadal steroids. This study evaluated the effect of Kisspeptin-10 (Kp10) on ovulation induction in rabbits, comparing its efficacy with that of the GnRH analogue gonadorelin. Multiparous New Zealand White × California does were assigned to three groups: control group (0.5 % saline solution, i.v.), GnRH group (20 μg gonadorelin, i.m.), and Kp10 group (250 μg Kp10, i

neuroVIISAS-based construction of a stereotactic rhesus monkey brain atlas for connectome research.

BACKGROUND: Digital brain atlases are indispensable for primate connectomics, providing precise stereotactic references that enable reproducible mapping of structural and functional data. NEW METHOD: We provide a fully digitized, bilaterally complete 3D reconstruction of the Paxinos et al. rhesus macaque atlas, implemented within the existing neuroVIISAS platform. The contribution of this work is the creation of a reusable, stereotactically embedded resource, rather than the introduction of new computational methods. Using polygon-based segmentation, we systematically digitized 1722 anatomica
