Distinguishing Japanese Spotted Fever and Scrub Typhus, Central Japan, 2004- 2015.

Japanese spotted fever (JSF) and scrub typhus (ST) are endemic to Japan and share similar clinical features. To document the clinical and epidemiologic characteristics that distinguish these 2 rickettsial diseases, during 2004-2015 we recruited 31 JSF patients, 188 ST patients, and 97 nonrickettsial disease patients from the southern Boso Peninsula of Japan. JSF occurred during April-October and ST during November-December. Scrub typhus: surveillance, clinical profile and diagnostic issues in Shandong, China.

To elucidate the epidemic status, clinical profile, and current diagnostic issues of scrub typhus in Shandong Province, we analyzed the surveillance data of scrub typhus from 2006 to 2011 and conducted a hospital-based disease survey in 2010. Orientia tsutsugamushi bacteremia and cytokine levels in Vietnamese scrub typhus patients.

Scrub typhus, caused by the intracellular bacterium Orientia tsutsugamushi, is a major cause of febrile illness in the Asia/Pacific region. Here, we implemented a novel real-time PCR and determined the relation of DNA target gene concentration with serum cytokine levels. The limit of detection of the novel real-time PCR was 1,062 DNA copies per ml of EDTA whole blood. Scrub typhus in Darjeeling, India: opportunities for simple, practical prevention measures.

To identify risk factors for scrub typhus in Darjeeling, India, we compared 62 scrub typhus cases (acute fever with eschar and specific IgM) with 62 neighbourhood controls. Possible scrub typhus coinfections in Thai agricultural workers hospitalized with leptospirosis.

Possible coinfections with Orientia tsutsugamushi the causative agent of scrub typhus, were prospectively evaluated in rice farmers hospitalized with leptospirosis in Northeast Thailand. A 21-year-old man presented with fever, rash, seizure, stiff neck and rapidly progressive bilateral pulmonary infiltrates. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) study revealed pleocytosis with predominant polymorphonuclear cells, and hypo-glycorrhachia. We report a case of sero-negative tsutsugamushi disease diagnosed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). A 54-year-old man who worked in Nagano prefecture presented with flu-like symptoms that did not respond to cephalosporin therapy.
