Neuromechanical Modelling of Articulatory Movements from Surface Electromyography and Speech Formants.

Speech articulation is produced by the movements of muscles in the larynx, pharynx, mouth and face. Therefore speech shows acoustic features as formants which are directly related with neuromotor actions of these muscles. The first two formants are strongly related with jaw and tongue muscular activity. Speech can be used as a simple and ubiquitous signal, easy to record and process, either locally or on e-Health platforms. This fact may open a wide set of applications in the study of functional grading and monitoring neurodegenerative diseases. A relevant question, in this sense, is how far s

Intermittent Low-level Noise Causes Negative Neural Gain in the Inferior Colliculus.

The central auditory system shows a remarkable ability to rescale its neural representation of loudness following long-term, low-level acoustic exposures; even when the noise is presented intermittently. Circadian rhythms exert potent biological effects, but it remains unclear if acoustic exposures occurring during the light or dark cycle affect the neurophysiological changes involved in loudness rescaling. To address this issue we exposed rats to intermittent (12 h/day), low-level noise (10-20 kHz, 75 dB SPL) for 5 weeks; exposures occurred during either the light (inactive) or dark (active)

Internally coupled ears in living mammals.

It is generally held that the right and left middle ears of mammals are acoustically isolated from each other, such that mammals must rely on neural computation to derive sound localisation cues. There are, however, some unusual species in which the middle ear cavities intercommunicate, in which case each ear might be able to act as a pressure-difference receiver. This could improve sound localisation at lower frequencies. The platypus Ornithorhynchus is apparently unique among mammals in that its tympanic cavities are widely open to the pharynx, a morphology resembling that of some non-mammal

Latency of auditory evoked potential monitoring the effects of general anesthetics on nerve fibers and synapses.

Auditory evoked potential (AEP) is an effective index for the effects of general anesthetics. However, it's unknown if AEP can differentiate the effects of general anesthetics on nerve fibers and synapses. Presently, we investigated AEP latency and amplitude changes to different acoustic intensities during pentobarbital anesthesia. Latency more regularly changed than amplitude during anesthesia. AEP Latency monotonically decreased with acoustic intensity increase (i.e., latency-intensity curve) and could be fitted to an exponential decay equation, which showed two components, the theoretical m

Plasticity and modified loudness following short-term unilateral deprivation: evidence of multiple gain mechanisms within the auditory system.

Auditory deprivation and stimulation can change the threshold of the acoustic middle ear reflex as well as loudness in adult listeners. However, it has remained unclear whether changes in these measures are due to the same mechanism. In this study, deprivation was achieved using a monaural earplug that was worn by listeners for 7 days. Acoustic reflex thresholds (ARTs) and categorical loudness ratings were measured using a blinded design in which the experimenter was unaware of which ear had been plugged. Immediately after terminating unilateral deprivation, ARTs were obtained at a lower sound

Influence of embedded fibers and an epithelium layer on the glottal closure pattern in a physical vocal fold model.

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to explore the possible structural and material property features that may facilitate complete glottal closure in an otherwise isotropic physical vocal fold model. METHOD Seven vocal fold models with different structural features were used in this study. An isotropic model was used as the baseline model, and other models were modified from the baseline model by either embedding fibers aligned along the anterior-posterior direction in the body or cover layer, adding a stiffer outer layer simulating the epithelium layer, or a combination of the 2 features. Magnetic resonance imaging findings in children with tinnitus.

OBJECTIVE: Tinnitus in adults is generally investigated by contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to rule out the diagnosis of acoustic neuroma. Acoustic neuroma is rare in children and, therefore, the role of MRI in children with tinnitus is unclear. This study was undertaken to determine the value of MRI in the investigation of tinnitus in children. METHODS: Retrospective study of children younger than 18 years who underwent MRI for the investigation of tinnitus over a 10-year period. RESULTS: Sixty-five patients were identified, but there were only 34 who had also undergone au

The medial olivocochlear system attenuates the developmental impact of early noise exposure.

The early onset of peripheral deafness profoundly alters the functional maturation of the central auditory system. A prolonged exposure to an artificial acoustic environment has a similar disruptive influence. These observations establish the importance of normal patterns of sound-driven activity during the initial stages of auditory development. The present study was designed to address the role of cochlear gain control during these activity-dependent developmental processes. It was hypothesized that the regulation of auditory nerve activity by the medial olivocochlear system (MOCS) would pre

A computer model of auditory efferent suppression: implications for the recognition of speech in noise.

The neural mechanisms underlying the ability of human listeners to recognize speech in the presence of background noise are still imperfectly understood. However, there is mounting evidence that the medial olivocochlear system plays an important role, via efferents that exert a suppressive effect on the response of the basilar membrane. The current paper presents a computer modeling study that investigates the possible role of this activity on speech intelligibility in noise. A model of auditory efferent processing [Ferry, R. Effects of incident field refraction on scattered field from vertically extended cylindrical targets in range-dependent ocean waveguides.

The effect of incident field refraction on the scattered field from vertically extended cylindrical targets is investigated. A theoretical model for the total scattered field from a cylindrical target in a range-dependent ocean waveguide is developed from Green's theorem. The locally scattered field on the target surface is estimated as a function of the incident field by applying the appropriate boundary conditions on continuity of acoustic pressure and normal velocity, making the model applicable to general penetrable cylinders. The model can account for depth dependence in medium sound spee
