INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to correlate structural, histomorphological damage of the salivary gland with scintigraphic findings during fractioned radiotherapy.
METHODS: The head and neck area of 27 WAG/RijH rats was irradiated with (60)Co-gamma-rays (60 Gy/30f/6 weeks). A port-system was implanted and (99m)Tc-pertechnetat applied at different stages of irradiation (0, 16, 30, 46, 60 Gy and 6 months post irradiation).

Extrapulmonary small cell carcinoma (ESCC) has been recognized as a clinicopathologic entity distinct from small cell carcinoma of the lung. Fifty-three patients with carcinomas of the head and neck with N2 or N3 metastatic cervical lymph nodes were treated with radiation therapy (median, 70 Gy), cisplatin (median, 6 weekly courses) and hyperthermia (median, 6 twice weekly sessions). Local complete response was achieved in 82% and nodal complete response in 85% of patients. Overall survival was 51% and disease-free survival was 54% at 2 years. Toxicity was acceptable. Radiation therapy, cisplatin and hyperthermia in combination prove to be effective and safe in management of these patients.

We conducted a clinical audit of the recurrence-free rates and absolute survival of 146 patients who presented with T1-T3 glottic cancer and received primary radiotherapy treatment at the Nova Scotia Cancer Centre between 1984 and 1990. Eighty-one laryngeal cancer patients treated at our clinic during the past ten years were studied clinically. The proportion of patients in their sixties was highest and the number of males was much larger than that of females, at a ratio of 15:1. Laryngeal cancer was classified as glottic, supraglottic, and subglottic in 58, 19, and 4 cases, respectively, and glottic cancer patients accounted for more than half of these. The purpose of this study was to investigate the incidence of metastases to retropharyngeal (RP) nodes and to evaluate the results of RP node dissections in advanced carcinomas of the oropharynx and hypopharynx.
