Relationship of Anxiety, Depression, Stress, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms with Disease Severity in Acutely Ill Hospitalized COVID-19 Patients.

We aimed to investigate depression, anxiety, stress, and PTSD symptoms and their relationship with disease severity in acutely ill hospitalized Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients. A single-center cross-sectional observational survey study screening for psychiatric symptoms using the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale-21 Items (DASS-21) and the Impact of Events Scale-Revised (IES-R) questionnaires was performed including a total of 169 acutely ill COVID-19 patients. All patients were adults and of white race and developed respiratory insufficiency during hospitalization. Demographic

Serum cytokine variations among inpatients with major depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia versus healthy controls: a prospective 'true-to-life' study.

BACKGROUND: There is increasing evidence of the association between chronic low-grade inflammation and severe mental illness (SMI). The objective of our study was to assess serum cytokine levels (SCLs) at admission and discharge in a true-to-life-setting population of inpatients with major depression (MD), bipolar disorder (BD), and schizophrenia (Sz), as well as of healthy controls. METHODS: We considered MD, BD, and Sz to be SMIs. We evaluated 206 inpatients [MD, N = 92; BD, N = 26; mania (Ma), N = 44; Sz, N = 44). Generalized estimating equations were used to analyze variations in SCL [int

The relationship between dysfunctional attitudes, maladaptive perfectionism, metacognition and symptoms of mania and depression in bipolar disorder: The role of self-compassion as a mediating factor.

BACKGROUND: Maladaptive cognitions appear to be associated with the severity of mood symptoms in bipolar disorder (BD), but findings are mixed and generally cross-sectional in design. METHOD: This study (n = 331) explored the associations between maladaptive cognitions and mood symptoms in BD over time (3 months), and the potential mediating effect of self-compassion cross-sectionally. Dysfunctional attitudes, maladaptive perfectionism and maladaptive metacognitions were explored separately with depressive and manic symptoms, and with current mood state in BD. RESULTS: The results showed mal

Major depression disorder may causally associate with the increased atrial fibrillation risk: evidence from two-sample mendelian randomization analyses.

BACKGROUND: Observational studies have revealed a link between major depressive disorder (MDD) and a higher chance of developing atrial fibrillation (AF). It is still uncertain whether or not this correlation indicates a causal relationship. This research set out to evaluate the causal impact of MDD on AF. METHODS: To evaluate the causal relationship between MDD and AF, we employed a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) method. A new genome-wide association study (GWAS) with 500,199 participants was used to obtain an overview of the association of genetic variations with MDD. An additional…

The Association of Age With Depression, Anxiety, and Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms During the COVID-19 Pandemic in Spain: The Role of Loneliness and Prepandemic Mental Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Older adults may be at lower risk of common mental disorders than younger adults during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Previous research has shown shown differences by age in psychosocial well-being during the pandemic and have highlighted the moderating effect of prepandemic mental disorders on that association. In this line, we examined the association of age with self-reported symptoms of loneliness, depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress, as well as potential roles of loneliness symptoms and prepandemic mental disorders on the association between age an

Hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis function in female adolescent nonsuicidal self-injury and its association with comorbid borderline personality disorder and depression.

OBJECTIVES: Behavioral disturbances in adolescence are potentially linked to aberrant functioning of the thyroid gland. Accordingly, alterations of the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis might impact psychopathological development. Yet corresponding research in adolescents with nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) and comorbid mental disorders is scarce. METHODS: The present study examined HPT axis functioning in adolescents with NSSI compared to healthy controls (HC) using blood-based assays of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free triiodothyronine (fT3), free thyroxine (fT4), and the rat
