Physiological adaptations to velocity-controlled resistance training.

The force-velocity characteristics of skeletal muscle are such that maximal force is inversely related to the velocity of shortening. This relationship has been observed using isolated muscle preparations and intact muscle groups (e.g. knee extensors). Isokinetic dynamometry has revealed some specific physiological adaptations to different velocities of training: an increase in torque and power that are greater at or near the velocity of training; a transfer of torque gains to slower and faster angular velocities after intermediate velocity resistance training; increases in maximal oxygen cons

[Causes and pathophysiology of infection of the knee joint].

The origin of an infection of the knee joint can be of an endogenous/hematogenous nature or, in posttraumatic cases, of an exogenous nature. Hematogenous infections are found mostly in children, but also in patients with reduced immune functions, e.g. after organ transplantations. Posttraumatic joint infections are caused by open injuries, intraarticular injections, operations, or they can be transmitted from the surroundings. They are relatively rare after accident surgery and orthopedic surgery. Two statements are of special importance for pathophysiology: 1. An intraarticular infection will

The case for an open approach to tibial nailing.

Medullary nailing of the tibia without exposing the fracture site is a technically possible procedure. In order to test if it is a superior method to open nailing, a retrospective study of 55 cases was undertaken; 35 had been nailed by the closed technique and 20 by open operation. All fractures united. Knee movements were full unless there had also been other injuries. Complications were common; infection occurred in 20 per cent of open nailings and in 31 per cent of closed nailings . Twenty per cent of the tibias showed rotational deformities and 9 per cent of patients developed peroneal ner

Abduction in Proximal Hamstring Tendon Avulsion Injury Mechanism: A Report on 3 Athletes.

Proximal hamstring tendon avulsions are typically sustained during forced hip hyperflexion combined with knee extension. We present 3 cases of athletes with a proximal hamstring tendon avulsion caused by an alternative injury mechanism that also involves a considerable hip abduction component (flexion-abduction injury mechanism). All cases had at least one concurrent injury of the medial thigh muscles, either on the ipsilateral or contralateral side. The 2 elite athletes with this injury mechanism returned to sport at preinjury level relatively quickly. A history of the flexion-abduction mecha

SKINTED: an uncommon cutaneous complication of total knee replacement.

Surgery of the knee, injury to the infrapatellar branch of the saphenous nerve, traumatic eczematous dermatitis (SKINTED) involving the skin lateral to the surgical incision/scar area is a site- and procedure-specific diagnosis associated with total knee replacement surgery. It results from autonomic denervation following surgical trauma to the nerve and occurs months to years after surgical trauma. It needs to be differentiated from post traumatic eczema/dermatitis, neuropathic dermatitis and contact dermatitis/sensitization due to topical therapies or implant material. Herein, we report a ca

Rate of Torque Development and Feedforward Control of the Hip and Knee Extensors: Gender Differences.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether women demonstrate decreased rate of torque development (RTD) of the hip and knee extensors and altered onset timing of the vastus lateralis and gluteus maximus during a drop-jump task when compared with men. On average, women demonstrated significantly lower normalized RTD of the hip extensors (women: 11.6 ± 1.3 MVT.s-1, men: 13.1 ± 0.9 MVT.s-1; p ≤ .01); however, there was no significant difference in knee extensor RTD. Women also demonstrated significantly earlier activation of their vastus lateralis (women: 206.0 ± 130.6 ms, men: 80.9 ± 69.

Effects of prophylactic ankle and knee braces on leg stiffness during hopping.

During human movement, the leg can be represented as a mechanical spring, with its stiffness potentially contributing to sports performance and injury prevention. Although many individuals perform athletic activities with joint stabilizers, little is known about the effects of prophylactic lower extremity braces on leg stiffness. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of ankle and/or knee braces on leg stiffness measured during one-legged hopping at a range of frequencies. Thirteen male participants performed one-legged hopping with their dominant leg at frequencies of 2.2,

Comparison between Closing-Wedge and Opening-Wedge High Tibial Osteotomy in Patients with Medial Knee Osteoarthritis: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

Young active patients with medial knee osteoarthritis (OA) combined with varus leg alignment can be treated with high tibial osteotomy (HTO) to stop the progression of OA and avoid or postpone total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Closing-wedge osteotomy (CWO) and opening-wedge osteotomy (OWO) are the most commonly used osteotomy techniques. The purpose of this study was to compare the clinical and radiologic outcomes and complications between OWO and CWO. We retrospectively evaluated 23 studies including 17 clinical trials from published databases from their inception to May 2015. We evaluated the c

Meniscal ossicle: a case report.

Meniscal ossicle is a cortical or cancellous tissue with central viable marrow surrounded by meniscal cartilage. We present a case of medial meniscal ossicle at its posterior horn. A 21-year-old male military recruit visited our clinic due to left knee discomfort. He had not undergone any notable injury on the knee, but complained of intermittent catching or giving way without locking. Simple radiographs showed a small round bony fragment at posteromedial side of knee joint. The magnetic resonance imaging revealed an intra-substance lesion of meniscus, whose signal is identical to bone. On art

Comparison of simulation and experiments of different closed-loop strategies for functional electrical stimulation: experiments in paraplegics.

Open-loop and closed-loop stimulation of the knee extensors for the control of the knee joint angle and torque were tested as a potential basis for more complex functional electrical stimulation (FES) systems to be used in human locomotion. The output of the biomechanical simulation model described previously was compared with stimulation experiments in patients with complete thoracic spinal cord injury. Good correspondence between simulation and experiments was obtained under both isometric conditions and conditions with a freely swinging shank. For closed-loop control, a simple proportional

Keypoint detection and functional evaluation of human lower limbs based on YOLOv8 and HRNet.

With the development of artificial intelligence and deep learning technology, human pose estimation has been widely applied in fields such as medical rehabilitation and motion analysis. To meet the needs of objective assessment of lower limb function in patients with knee joint diseases, we propose a method for detecting and assessing the function of human lower limb keypoints by integrating YOLOv8 with an improved HRNet. Firstly, the YOLOv8s model is used to locate the human region in the image. Then, the HRNet-W32 model, enhanced with a Gating Unit and Keypoint Attention Unit, is employed to

Integration of a Knee Flexor Bias or Hip Hinge Bias Resistance Training Program With Combined High-Speed Running in Academy Soccer Players.

Ross, S, Ripley, NJ, McMahon, JJ, and Comfort, P. Integration of a knee flexor bias or hip hinge bias resistance training program with combined high-speed running in academy soccer players. J Strength Cond Res 39(11): e1313-e1328, 2025-Strength training has been shown to mitigate risk of hamstring strain injury and enhance athletic performance. However, most training studies are focused on single exercise interventions and, therefore, lacking in ecological validity. In this study, we investigated the effects of combined resistance training and curvilinear high-speed running, with resistance tr

Alterations of landing biomechanics from an inclined treadmill running-induced fatigue protocol.

Purpose: This study examined the biomechanical effects of running-induced fatigue on the kinematic and kinetic changes of the lower limb during a countermovement jump (CMJ) via analyzing variations in joint biomechanics during landing. Methods: A running-induced fatigue protocol was employed to explore changes in joint angle, moments, stiffness and loading rate during the CMJ landing pre and post-fatigue. Paired-sample t-tests assessed changes in discrete parameters of joint stiffness, loading rates, and time-varying parameters were compared with one-dimensional statistical parametric mapping.

Functional outcomes of simultaneous anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction and lateral extra-articular tenodesis using an all-suture anchor: a modified mini-open technique.

INTRODUCTION: The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture frequently leads to instability of the knee joint, which subsequently damages other intra‑articular structures. The combination of ACL reconstruction (ACLR) with concurrent lateral extra‑articular tenodesis (LET) improves rotational stability and reduces the risk of subsequent ACL rupture. However, there is not much research that specifically outlines LET hardware and surgical methods. AIM: This study aimed to describe and evaluate clinical outcomes of a mini‑open modified Lemaire technique using a self‑punching all‑suture anchor. MA
