BACKGROUND: Patients with neurogenic bladder are at risk of developing renal deterioration secondary to increased intravesical pressures. To date, urodynamics is the gold standard test to properly assess bladder dynamics. Home bladder manometry is a low-cost and simple method to evaluate bladder pressures and volumes during clean intermittent catheterization (CIC). Previous literature has shown that home manometry measurements correlate with urodynamic pressures and hydronephrosis on ultrasound. However, no studies have evaluated the challenges and barriers faced by caregivers with the process

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has challenged palliative end-of-life care for people with dementia. The site of death can be considered as an end-of-life care quality indicator. Most people with dementia prefer to die at nursing or private homes; however, in Japan, they are often hospitalized in psychiatric hospitals for management of neuropsychiatric symptoms. As palliative end-of-life care for older adults with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias has been further challenged by the COVID-19 pandemic, little is known about its effects on the place of death in pat

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: This study aims to evaluate the service impact of the integration of an evidence-based instrument - the Personalised Patient Education Protocol - into an existing postmyocardial infarction care pathway.
BACKGROUND: Recent research indicates that while better patient health outcomes can be achieved when care planning is personalised, delivery staff feel less satisfied and less confident in its provision. To achieve a shift to personalised care, innovations are needed to enable an effective transition for staff.
DESIGN: A service evaluation using a patient survey and nurse

BACKGROUND: Hand hygiene compliance among health care providers is considered to be the single most effective factor to reduce hospital acquired infections. Despite continuous education and awareness, compliance with hand hygiene guidelines has remained low, particularly during evening shifts.
OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to determine the compliance with hand hygiene guidelines among doctors, nurses, and paramedical staff during day and night duties in a multidisciplinary intensive care unit (ICU).
METHODS: We used a prospective, observational, 6-month study conducted in a 34-bed ICU within

Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is a disorder characterized by a sudden onset of orthostatic intolerance upon standing, which may be relieved when lying down. The most common complications associated with POTS are trauma or injury from falling or fainting. Pediatric patients with POTS may have comorbidities that interfere with their quality of life. Careful management of the disorder is essential to prevent injury. POTS management is often misunderstood, which may lead to misdiagnosis and invalidation by health care professionals. This article discusses how POTS affects pediat

Cases of syphilis in the United States are at an all-time high. Although men who have sex with men continue to be adversely affected, record rates of infection are now seen in women, men who have sex with women, and in congenital cases. Persons of color and ethnic minorities are among communities affected. Review of sexual practices and risk factors such as substance use are key to identifying infections early to stop spread of the disease. Educating nurses on how to identify those at risk, order and interpret testing, effectively treat, and follow these patients is vital to stopping the epide

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a long-term lung disease characterised by breathlessness, cough and sputum production. Progressively worsening breathlessness for the patient with COPD limits everyday activity, reduces quality of life and increases the risk of premature death. Beyond reducing symptoms and the rate and severity of exacerbations, the aim of treatment is to increase exercise capacity and improve overall health and wellbeing. Nurses have an important role in ensuring advance care planning is implemented for every patient. This article describes the diagnosis, assess

This case describes an injury to a 40-year-old woman, employed as a softball team coach, who presented to an emergency department (ED) after sustaining a line drive hit to the right side of the face with a softball during practice. Upon arrival to the ED, the patient complained of moderate pain, swelling, and bruising over the right side of her midface area. After evaluation in the ED, the patient received a diagnosis of a zygomatic arch fracture that was further managed by an occupational medicine nurse practitioner, a plastic surgeon, and an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) physician specialist.

In today's evolving health care field, outpatient procedures are becoming more commonplace. Many patients with suprapubic catheters are now being seen in outpatient or home care settings. Addressing the educational needs of patients, family members, and nursing staff is now more important than ever for successful patient suprapubic catheter management. A basic understanding of how these catheters are initially placed is essential for proper care and avoidance of possible complications. This review of initial placement of suprapubic catheters and post-insertion care is based on one clinician's

Using A Beautiful Mind, a film about the troubled life of Nobel laureate John Forbes Nash as its focal source, this paper considers the difficulties people with mental illness struggle with in perceiving and experiencing reality. Relationships among the concepts of genius, madness, and alternate reality conceptualization are explored to establish perspective for a model illustrating the progression of paranoid schizophrenia. The importance of empathy in treating mental illness and the role that psychiatric mental health advanced practice nurses play in managing the care of people with paranoid

Research indicates that bullying continues to plague schools, and school-based anti-bullying programs do little to take away the opportunities and power of the child who bullies. Research indicates methods to identify the child who bullies, and provides guidelines to change the bullying behaviors. Unfortunately, this information fails to result in changes in practice. Nomination of children who bully by their peers and the utilization of methods that remove the bully's power are promising interventions. Administrators, teachers, parents, nurses, and mental health providers need to be proactive

Sub-threshold anxiety and depression are common presentations in primary care. They carry a significant disability burden along with the risk of developing a frank disorder. Intervention options are limited, although there is some evidence that ultra brief interventions may be effective with this patient group. We argue that there is a need for a systematic but ultra brief, minimal contact intervention, that can be delivered by GPs or practice nurses. Such an intervention would be a form of facilitated self-management, a step up from self-help, from which people could be referred on to more in

Meningitis, when caused by the fungal mycoses Cryptococcus neoformans, is normally seen in immuno-compromised hosts. However, immunocompetent patients are also susceptible to cryptococcal meningitis (CM). In patients with an intact immune system, CM usually presents with the typical signs and symptoms of meningitis: fever, stiff neck, and headache. Major implications for the primary and advanced practice nursing plans of care for CM patients include a thorough history and physical exam, early diagnosis and treatment, and an individualized plan of care focused on minimizing sequelae and side ef
