[Outcomes of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis patients with high body mass index undergoing extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) related outcomes during hospitalization during the intensive care unit … three groups: light weight group (BMI < 18.5 kg/m2), normal weight group (BMI 18.5-24.9 kg/m2), and overweight group (BMI ≥ 25.0 kg/m2). Mainly to compare the relevant outcomes of ECMO among patients during ICU. RESULTS: A total of 114 IPF patients who received ECMO support during lung transplantation were collected, including 23 cases in the light weight g …

Non-High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol in Children with Diabetes: Proposed Treatment Recommendations Based on Glycemic Control, Body Mass Index, Age, Sex, and Generally Accepted Cut Points.

Percentile-based non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels were analyzed by glycemic control, weight, age, and sex of children with type 1 diabetes (n = 26,358). Ten percent of all children and 25% of overweight adolescent girls require both immediate lipid-lowering medication and lifestyle changes to achieve non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels <120 mg/dL and cardiovascular risk reduction.

Malnutrition in morbidly obese patients: fact or fiction?

Reports of nutritional deficiencies after Bariatric surgery have lead investigators to inquire about the preoperative nutritional status of morbidly obese patients. Interestingly, numerous reports demonstrated a pattern of low levels of various micronutrients among overweight and obese patients, even in comparison with normal weight population. In this article we reviewed the literature for micronutrient deficiencies in obese patients prior to weight reduction surgery.

[Joint and sensory branch block of the obturator and femoral nerves in a case of femoral head osteonecrosis and arthritis].

The sensory innervation of the hip joint is complex. The joint and sensory branch block of the obturator and femoral nerves is effective for treating the pain caused due to different hip diseases. This could be an option to be considered in certain circumstances such as, being a surgical-anaesthetic high risk, or if there is significant overweight, It could also be useful on other occasions if the traumatoligist considers that it is better to delay hip replacement for a limited period.

Defining a ketone threshold for weight loss: evidence from 14 day daily β-hydroxybutyrate monitoring in 217 subjects on a ketogenic diet.

BACKGROUND: The ketogenic diet (KD) is a widely used nutritional intervention for weight loss. The beneficial effects of the KD are intrinsically linked to the state of physiological ketosis, where ketone bodies (KBs) raise, even though minimal effective threshold of blood ketone concentration that correlates with significant weight loss remains unclear. Therefore, the main purpose of this study was to identify the optimal β-hydroxybutyrate (βHB) threshold associated with weight loss in individuals with overweight or obesity undergoing a KD. METHODS: This secondary analysis included 217 parti…

Adjunctive Treatments for Patients with Type 1 Diabetes Using Automated Insulin Delivery Systems. A Narrative Review.

Automated Insulin Delivery (AID) systems represent the most effective and safe treatment for the management of type 1 diabetes (T1D). Antidiabetic agents used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, such as the Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 (GLP-1) Receptor Agonists (RAs), the dual Glucose-dependent Insulinotropic Polypeptide and GLP-1 RA and the Sodium-Glucose co-Transporter 2 inhibitors are associated with clinically significant weight loss and cardioprotective effect. Given the increased prevalence of overweight, obesity, and cardiovascular risk in patients with T1D, the addition of these medicatio…

Polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome in pregnancy: pathophysiology and outcomes.

Polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS), formerly known as polycystic ovary syndrome, is a chronic condition driven by genetic, epigenetic and lifestyle factors. The resulting endocrine changes, including hyperinsulinaemia and hyperandrogenism, underpin the clinical manifestations of PMOS and are amplified by overweight and obesity. Reproductive features of PMOS, including ovulatory disturbance, endometrial abnormalities, subfertility and an increased rate of pregnancy and birth complications, have long been documented in these patients, but awareness in clinical practice has only incr…

Machine learning prediction of effective radiation doses in various computed tomography applications: a virtual human phantom study.

OBJECTIVES: In this work, it was aimed to employ machine learning (ML) algorithms to accurately forecast the radiation doses for phantoms wh … males. Furthermore, an average of 11 % more dose was taken to the normal weight phantom than to the overweight, the overweight in comparison to the obese I, and the obese I in comparison to the obese II. Among the ML algorithms, the LR showed 0 error rate and 100 % accuracy in predicting CT doses. CONCLUSIONS: The LR was shown to be the best approach out of …

Impact of tongue fat volume on obstructive sleep apnea in non-obese patients.

Evidence suggests excess head and neck adipose tissue contributes to OSA, particularly in obese patients. Surgical treatments are often ineffective in this subset of the population. We sought to investigate the role of tongue fat in the normal and overweight populations. In this prospective cohort study, patients underwent overnight polysomnography and MRI using a Dixon sequence. Volumetric reconstruction evaluated the size and distribution of tongue fat deposits in subjects with and without sleep apnea. The study included 86 patients; mean age of 42.2 (SD 11.2) years, 16% female. Average BMI …

The Impact of Physical Activity on Weight Loss in Relation to the Pillars of Lifestyle Medicine-A Narrative Review.

Currently, overweight and obesity are key problems globally. Several modifiable factors influence weight management. The number of obese and overweight people has significantly increased over the past few decades. Therefore, it is crucial to find effective and tailored strategies for weight management in public health and medicine. It has become necessary to take a comprehensive look at the problem of obesity and the process of weight loss, taking into account various aspects of lifestyle. To date, the effectiveness of dietary interventions, training interventions, or a combination of both has…

However, associations between the index and the proportions of overweight, obese or non-breastfed children were weak. CONCLUSIONS: The Child Adjusted Care Need Index may be useful in identifying centres with higher proportions of children at risk for second-hand smoke exposure and failures in language screening. Relationship between moderate alcohol consumption, genetic polymorphisms and body weight in a population sample of Puerto Madryn, Argentina.

Introduction. The relationship between obesity and alcohol consumption is a topic of significant interest to public health. Alcoholic beverages contribute additional calories to the diet, which could be a relevant factor to the overweight risk. However, its association with weight gain is controversial and influenced by multiple factors. Objective. To analyze the relationship between moderate alcohol intake and body mass index, considering the variables that may influence this relationship. Materials and methods. The sample consisted of 155 individuals from Puerto Madryn (Argentina). Each part…

A novel variant of IGSF1 in siblings with congenital central hypothyroidism whose diagnosis was prompted by school health checkups.

Following the partial revision of the enforcement regulations of the School Health and Safety Act, school health checkups incorporated growth evaluation of schoolchildren in April 2016 using growth charts. We report cases of congenital central hypothyroidism (C-CH) in siblings with a novel nonsense variant in the immunoglobulin superfamily member 1 gene (IGSF1); their diagnoses were prompted by school health checkups. School checkups revealed that the older brother was overweight and had a reduced growth rate at the age of 11 yr, whereas the younger brother was overweight and had short stature…
