Bleeding Complications from Chest Tube Treatment in Patients on Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Support.

OBJECTIVES: Bleeding is a common complication of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support. While chest tube treatment is infrequently linked to bleeding in non-ECMO patients, several reports suggest a markedly increased risk during ECMO support, sometimes requiring surgical intervention. The true incidence, contributing factors, and effect on outcome from chest tube related bleeding in ECMO patients is unknown. METHODS: This was a single-centre observational study conducted between 2010 and 2024, including both paediatric and adult patients treated with chest tube for pneumothorax o

Engineered Probiotics with Low Oxygen Targeting Porphyromonas gingivalis and Gingival Fibroblasts for the Treatment of Periodontitis.

The overuse of antibiotics has increased the prevalence of drug-resistant bacteria in periodontitis. "Sentinel" gingival fibroblasts, stimulated by pathogenic bacteria, continue to release signaling factors that affect stem cell repair and recruit immune cells, resulting in persistent inflammation in periodontal tissues, eventually leading to the loosening and loss of teeth. Periodontal pathogenic bacteria cause surface hypoxia, and gingival fibroblasts in the inflammatory microenvironment express HIF-1α, promoting hypoxic areas in periodontal pockets. No drug delivery system is available for

Can Peripheral Venous Oxygen Saturation Predict Clinical Decompensation in Pediatric Dilated Cardiomyopathy?

OBJECTIVE: Children diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) frequently require hospitalization due to episodes of decompensated heart failure. Impaired oxygen utilization is a hallmark of decompensated heart failure, and peripheral venous oxygen saturation (SpvO2) may serve as a useful indirect marker of the mismatch between oxygen delivery and tissue demand. This study aims to evaluate the predictive value of SpvO₂ in identifying clinical decompensation and mortality in pediatric DCM patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted on 55 pediatric patients diagnosed

Heart Rate Variability and Peripheral Oxygen Saturation Levels in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive respiratory disorder characterized by persistent airflow limitation, significantly impacting morbidity and mortality worldwide. The disease is often associated with autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction, which can adversely affect cardiac function and overall prognosis. This study investigates the relationship between heart rate variability (HRV), a non-invasive marker of autonomic regulation, and peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2) levels across different stages of COPD. The relevance of autonomic dysfunction in clinical pract

Rare complication of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation cannula misplacement into the hepatic vein: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (V-V ECMO) is a lifesaving intervention for severe respiratory failure; however, its effectiveness depends on accurate cannulation-patients with anatomical variations present with significant challenges during the procedure. CASE SUMMARY: We describe the case of a 56-year-old woman with severe pulmonary infection and acute respiratory failure managed with V-V ECMO. During the initial cannulation, a 23Fr venous drainage cannula was inadvertently inserted into the middle hepatic vein (HV) instead of the inferior vena cava (IVC) owing t

Functional Status Trends for Adults and Children on Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation at Time of Lung Transplantation.

Poor or worsening functional status of lung transplant (LTx) candidates is a key risk factor for waitlist and post-transplant mortality. As more critically ill adults and children are listed for LTx, the use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) as bridge to LTx is also increasing. Sustaining optimal functional status while on the waitlist to LTx is crucial for LTx candidates as deterioration in functional status can negatively impact pre- and post-LTx outcomes. We conducted an analysis of the United Network for Organ Sharing Registry which showed that most patients (70%) on ECMO succe

The Impact of Venovenous Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Cannulation Configuration on Hemodynamic Characteristics and Risks of Hemolysis.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the impact of veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV-ECMO) cannula configuration and ECMO blood flow on intravascular hemodynamic environment, oxygen saturation, hemolysis, and thrombotic risk under varying perfusion conditions. METHODS: Four different VV-ECMO cannulation configurations (femoro-jugular double cannulation, femoro-femoral double cannulation, dual-lumen single bicaval cannulation, and dual-lumen single bicaval cannulation blocking the atrial connecting vessel) commonly used in clinical practice were modeled and analyzed under different ECMO

Ultrasound-triggered reactive oxygen species production and antibacterial activity by thulium oxide nanoparticles.

Sonodynamic therapy (SDT), due to its non-invasive nature, high tissue penetration, and lack of drug resistance, has shown significant application prospects in the field of clinical antibacterial treatment. However, existing studies often require high ultrasonic energy, long ultrasonic exposure time, and high concentrations of sonosensitizer materials because the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by the sonosensitizers is typically insufficient. In this study, we showed that thulium oxide nanoparticles (Tm2O3 NPs) could be a candidate sonosensitizer exhibiting superior ROS production

Repeatability of carbon dioxide and methane emissions and oxygen consumption by forage-consuming beef heifers.

Gas exchange by ruminant livestock is deemed as a contributor to climate change. As such, research to reduce the production of greenhouse gasses is an emerging need. It is important that these studies reach definitive outcomes. Because the majority of cows are sustained by grazing forages, the objective of this study was to assess the variation in methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and oxygen (O2) consumption among forage-consuming beef cattle. Recommendations as to the number of days over which data need to be collected and the numbers of experimental units that need to be used

Rich Oxygen Vacancies in Bimetallic MnCo2O4.5 Spheres for Enhancing Lean Methane Catalytic Oxidation.

Methane is the second most prevalent greenhouse gas after carbon dioxide in global climate change, and catalytic oxidation technology is a very effective way to eliminate methane. However, the high reaction temperature of methane catalytic oxidation is an urgent problem that needs to be solved. In this work, a series of MnCo2O4.5 catalysts were prepared using carbon spheres as templates, combined with metal ion adsorption and calcination processes. Excitingly, the catalytic oxidation activity of MnCo2O4.5 spherical catalyst with irregular nanoparticles on the surface for lean methane (T90 = 39

The Impact of Distance and Altitude on Railway Environmental Noise Based on Cerebral Oxygenated Hemoglobin Saturation.

Railways are considered an environmentally sustainable mode of transportation but can pose significant environmental challenges due to their operation and associated activities. Among these, noise generation is a persistent source of public complaints. In Korea, a maximum distance of 100 m from buildings has been proposed for new railway developments in residential areas, although this guideline lacks a solid foundation based on experimental evidence. Noise barriers are often installed as a mitigation measure; however, there is no standardized guideline for their height in relation to their ef

Stunning pigs with inert gases at low residual oxygen does not compromise meat quality.

In the project for "Testing Inert Gases in order to Establish Replacements for high concentration carbon dioxide (CO2) stunning for pigs at the time of slaughter" (TIGER), we were investigating the effect of different inert gas atmospheres on meat quality. In two subsequent experiments a total of 1138 pigs were either stunned with argon or nitrogen (N2) as well as mixtures of those with 10-30 % CO2 or two high concentration CO2 atmospheres. With a newly developed and patented gas supply technology, we were able to create stunning atmospheres with a residual oxygen concentration < 1 %. In both

Oxygen dissociation curve inflection point during incremental exercise: a trigger for the Bohr effect.

We previously hypothesized that the inflection point of the oxygen dissociation curve (ODC) is linked to the gas exchange threshold (GET) during cardiopulmonary exercise testing. This hypothesis was supported by femoral venous blood gas data sampled during constant exercise below and above the GET, which showed that the ODC shifts rightward at the GET. What had gone unnoticed since these original observations in 1994 was that this rightward shift begins slightly earlier, precisely when the oxygen saturation crosses the ODC inflection point. To investigate this phenomenon, we analyzed the 1994

Nosocomial bloodstream infection in critically ill patients: is extracorporeal membrane oxygenation a relevant factor?

BACKGROUND: Nosocomial bloodstream infection (BSI) in critically ill patients can cause clinical deterioration, prolong intensive care unit (ICU) stays, and increase mortality risk. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support (ECMO) is a known risk factor for BSI, and infections in these patients are assumed to have a worse prognosis. AIM: To compare risk factors for BSI between ECMO and non-ECMO patients. METHODS: A three-year prospective observational study was conducted in a 24-bed medical ICU. Consecutive nosocomial BSI episodes were recorded, and BSIs in mechanically ventilated patients

Engineering nitrogen and oxygen functionalities in naturally sourced activated carbon for multicomponent gas adsorption.

Nitrogen doping is a widely adopted strategy to enhance the gas adsorption performance of activated carbon (AC) adsorbents. However, the simultaneous evolution of oxygen and nitrogen functional groups-especially in carbon precursors with high oxygen content-has received limited attention. In this study, coal-derived ACs with high surface areas (up to 940 m2/g) and micropore volumes (0.36 cm3/g) were synthesized via K2CO3-assisted physical activation, followed by nitrogen doping through co-pyrolysis with melamine. By regulating the doping temperature (600-900 °C), the nitrogen content of the re
