Rotational deformities of the tibia and foot in preterm infants.

Metatarsus adductus and medial tibial torsion are common in term infants. Our study shows that metatarsus adductus is rare, whereas medial tibial torsion does not occur in preterm infants with gestational ages of less than or equal to 30 weeks. These preterm infants have lateral rotation of the legs, external tibial rotation, and everted or normal feet at birth. This posture may explain the rarity of metatarsus adductus and medial tibial torsion in preterm infants.

Reaction times of normal subjects and amputees with below-knee and above-knee prostheses during stepping.

Reaction times (RTs) of nine normal subjects and 11 amputees with prosthetic limbs were examined in standing posture and during stepping movement. There were significant differences of RTs between standing and stepping, and between the phases of the stepping cycle in both the normal subjects and the BK or AK amputees with prosthetic limbs. The attentional demand during stepping movement and the applicability of probe RT procedure to assess prosthetic limb were briefly discussed.

[The role of vestibular and proprioceptive afferent pathways in the reaction to pushing (author's transl)].

The reaction to pushing was studied in 6 normal subjects and 3 patients with bilateral peripheral vestibular lesions. The reaction to pushing was tested on the anterior tibial and soleus, by modifying the proprioceptive afferent impulses. The respective parts of the vestibular, proprioceptive, visual components, and of a sudden, start are analyzed; the afferent impulses obtain information from the initial posture and modulate the relative importance of these different factors at a supra-segmentary level.

An epizootic of cerebrospinal nematodiasis in cottontail rabbits.

A progressively debilitating neurologic syndrome characterized by torticollis, ataxia, circling, and abnormal posture was observed in 16 of approximately 60 cottontail rabbits (Sylvilagus floridanus) captured in a 12-hectare portion of a woodlot in southwestern Virginia. Inflammatory and degenerative alterations in cerebellum and midbrain regions were characterized principally by malacia, perivascular cuffing, and gliosis. Single Ascaris columnaris larvae were found in the cerebellum of 2 rabbits and the spinal cord of 1 rabbit.

Are sitting, standing and stepping associated with adiposity markers in pre, primary and secondary school children and adolescents? A pooled data cross-sectional compositional approach.

Evidence on the associations between device-measured sitting and health outcomes in children and adolescents is inconclusive; however, understanding this relationship is important given the high prevalence of sitting during these life stages and its potential implications for long-term health. This study examined associations between compositions of sitting, standing, and stepping time with adiposity markers - waist circumference (WC) and body mass index (BMI) - in 2-18-year-olds. Data were pooled from eight Australian studies (2009-2014), including 1992 participants aged 2-18 years. Postural

Latent factors capturing evolution of behavior in larval zebrafish.

Animal behavior exhibits remarkable diversity across spatial and temporal scales, showing both significant regularity and high variability. Understanding such multiscale dynamics is essential for revealing the mechanisms and organizing principles that generate behavior and shape motor control. However, conventional analyses largely rely on static or statistical descriptors, which fail to capture the intrinsic dynamical rules governing behavioral evolution over time. Larval zebrafish, whose body posture can be quantified as spatial coordinates, provide an ideal vertebrate model for studying beh…

Peak pressure experienced by the human hand during suspension and vertical climbing.

Reconstructions of potential arboreal capabilities in extinct human ancestors (hominins) are typically inferred from upper limb morphology. Arboreal environments are complex with multiple support sizes and orientations. However, data are limited on how arboreal support variables may affect hand loading during arboreal activities. Using a custom-built climbing frame with interchangeable support diameters (45 mm, 80 mm, 105 mm), we investigated the effects of support diameter and horizontal/vertical orientation on the pressure experienced by the human hand during postural and locomotor suspensio

Quantification of changes in balance control with tasks and injury using detrending methods for time series analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Human balance control is regulated by complex temporal processes that may be disrupted by injury or increased task difficulty. METHODS: We examined long-range temporal characteristics of force platform recordings during quiet standing in 76 physically active participants with or without lower-limb injury, and in 13 non-injured participants standing with eyes closed or on one leg. Detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) and wavelet transform spectral analysis (WTS) were used to quantify the temporal dynamics of postural control. RESULTS: All recordings showed long-range autocorrela

One-Leg Standing: Right and Left Balance COP and EMG Analyses.

Manual asymmetries in motor control have been studied for more than 120 years, with the bulk of this work focusing on unimanual control of upper limb movements. Given that the global population is aging, and that gait and balance disorders in this population are common causes of falls, it is critical to understand control mechanisms underlying balance. To this end, the current study investigates lateralization control mechanisms underlying one leg balance using the mean distribution and variability in center of pressure (COP) in 109 right-hand dominant individuals. Participants stood on a forc

Interrelation between functional decline and dementia: The potential role of balance assessment.

OBJECTIVE: There has been growing interest in the past few years on the relationship between impairment of motor functions and cognitive decline, so that the first can be considered a marker of dementia. In MCI patients, the deficit in processing visual information interferes with postural control, causing oscillations and instability. Postural control is usually evaluated through the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) test or Tinetti scale, but, to our knowledge, there are no many studies that considered the Biodex Balance System (BBS) in the evaluation of postural controls in MCI pati

Sex Differences in the Visuomotor Control of Obstacle Crossing When Walking Are Not Age Related.

To ensure stable obstacle crossing when walking, visual information is required two steps before reaching the obstacle. As possible age-related sex differences in visuomotor control have not been investigated, we assessed sex differences in obstacle crossing while walking, as examined by toe clearance (TC) and postural stability. Participants were 14 younger and 14 older adults (equal numbers of men and women) who wore goggles for visual field adjustment while obstacle crossing during gait. We manipulated three visual field occlusion conditions (total, lower, and no visual field occlusions) tw
