Surgical Outcomes of Congenital Atrial Septal Defect Using da VinciTM Surgical Robot System.

BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive cardiac surgery has emerged as an alternative to conventional open surgery. This report reviews our experience with atrial septal defect using the da VinciTM surgical robot system. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included 50 consecutive patients who underwent atrial septal defect repair using the da VinciTM surgical robot system between October 2007 and May 2011. Among these, 13 patients (26%) were approached through a totally endoscopic approach and the others by mini-thoracotomy. Nineteen patients had concomitant procedures including tricuspid

Robot-assisted laparoscopic hysterectomy, gonadal biopsy, and orchiopexies in an infant with persistent mullerian duct syndrome.

An infant born with hypospadias and no palpable gonads was diagnosed with persistent mullerian duct syndrome (PMDS) based on history, physical examination, laboratory testing, and radiologic imaging. A robot-assisted laparoscopic hysterectomy, right gonadal biopsy, and bilateral orchiopexies were performed without incident. Final pathology confirmed the diagnosis of PMDS. To our knowledge, this is only the second report of PMDS managed through a robot-assisted laparoscopic approach.

Stepwise description and outcomes of bladder neck sparing during robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy.

PURPOSE: While bladder neck sparing may improve post-prostatectomy urinary continence, there is concern that it may lead to more positive surgical margins and compromise cancer control. We compared the continence and cancer control outcomes of bladder neck sparing vs nonsparing techniques during robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were prospectively collected on 1,067 robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomies done from September 2005 through October 2011. We compared the procedures according to bladder neck sparing (791) and nonsparing (276

Error-enhancing robot therapy to induce motor control improvement in childhood onset primary dystonia.

BACKGROUND: Robot-generated deviating forces during multijoint reaching movements have been applied to investigate motor control and to tune neuromotor adaptation. Can the application of force to limbs improve motor learning? In this framework, the response to altered dynamic environments of children affected by primary dystonia has never been studied. METHODS: As preliminary pilot study, eleven children with primary dystonia and eleven age-matched healthy control subjects were asked to perform upper limb movements, triangle-reaching (three directions) and circle-writing, using a haptic robot

Short- and long-term morbidity and outcomes after robotic surgery for comprehensive endometrial cancer staging.

OBJECTIVE: Although intra-operative and immediate postoperative complications of robotic surgery are relatively low, little is known about long-term morbidity. We set out to assess both short- and long-term morbidities after robotic surgery for endometrial cancer staging. METHODS: All patients who underwent robotic staging for EMCA between 2006 and 2009 from two institutions were identified. Patient charts were retrospectively reviewed for surgical complications and postoperative morbidities. RESULTS: Five hundred three patients were identified. No differences in complication rates were foun

Biomimetic robotic Venus flytrap (Dionaea muscipula Ellis) made with ionic polymer metal composites.

The work described in this paper is a novel design of a robotic Venus flytrap (VFT) (Dionaea muscipula Ellis) by means of ionic polymeric metal composite (IPMC) artificial muscles as distributed nanosensors and nanoactuators. Rapid muscular movements in carnivorous plants, such as VFT, which are triggered by antenna-like sensors (trigger hair), present a golden key to study distributed biomolecular motors. Carnivorous plants, such as VFT, possess built-in intelligence (trigger hairs), as a strategy to capture prey, that can be turned on in a controlled manner. In the case of the VFT, the prey

Oncologic outcomes for complete robot-assisted laparoscopic management of upper-tract transitional cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The gold standard for treatment of upper-tract transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) is nephroureterectomy. For distal ureteral TCC, distal ureterectomy with ureteral reimplantation represents a treatment option. Multiple minimally invasive techniques have been introduced with the goal of replicating these open procedures. Currently, there is a paucity of literature for the use of robot-assisted laparoscopic (RAL) management of upper-tract TCC. We evaluated our experience with RAL management of upper-tract TCC. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective chart review was perform

Robot-assisted oncologic resection for large gastric gastrointestinal stromal tumor: a preliminary case series.

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic resection of gastric gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) has been shown as feasible and safe in terms of oncologic results. However, laparoscopic resection has been demonstrated to be mainly suitable for small, favorably localized GIST. The robotic approach may, by its characteristics, enable the surgeon to perform atypical gastrectomies in an unfavorable location (i.e., close to pylorus or cardia). Its use in oncologic gastric surgery has been poorly defined and has never been reported for GIST. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All patients who underwent robotic-assisted gas
