Lymphoepithelial cyst (LEC) is the most commonly encountered congenital neck pathology in the lateral part of the neck. A 66-year-old woman presented to the ENT clinic due to difficulty in swallowing persisting for approximately 1 year. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a cystic mass at right tonsil. Surgery was performed due to this unilateral tonsillar mass, which was excised together with the right tonsil. LEC was diagnosed at histopathological examination. LEC in the palatine tonsil is rare, and only a few cases have been reported in the literature. We report a rare case of LEC in the pa

HSV 1 encephalitis is the most common cause of sporadic and focal viral encephalitis. Opercular syndrome is characterized by swallowing and speech difficulties which are associated with deterioration of voluntary control of face, pharynx, tongue and chewing muscles. It can be developed in patients with Herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE). Here, a twelve-year-old boy who was diagnosed with HSE and Opercular syndrome, is presented. The patient recovered without sequela as a result of 30 days of intravenous and 10 days of oral acyclovir treatment. It might be important as well, to personalize and e

Lip cancer is the most common malignancy of the oral cavity and the second most common cancer in the head and neck. Typically, squamous cell carcinoma of the lower lip is an ulcerated lesion with raised margins. Surgery is the best treatment for lower lip cancer. The lips are important aesthetically because of their prominent location on the face and functionally because of the essential mechanism of the sphincter in assisting mastication, swallowing, phonation, and expressing emotions. Depending on the location and size of a lip tumor, different types of reconstructive flaps are used. We desc

Chewing and spitting (CHSP) is the symptom of chewing and spitting out food without swallowing. CHSP is fairy common among patients with eating disorders, but no report has been published on drug treatment for it. We report a patient with anorexia nervosa showing extreme weight loss due to CHSP. After admission, CHSP was improved by treatment with Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors, leading to marked recovery of the body weight CHSP may represent a marker for illness severity, so its early treatment is critical to prevent the increasing severity of eating disorders.

An immediate surgical obturator is necessary for maxillectomy procedures to minimize functional disabilities in speech, swallowing, and egress of food and liquid into the surgical defect. Sometimes the extent of the tumor may be such that it may even require the removal of the maxillary sinus along with resection of the orbital floor. The resected orbital floor can be surgically reconstructed with autogenous soft and/or hard tissues or with alloplastic materials. This clinical report highlights one such situation where the surgical resection of the maxilla and the orbital floor were rehabilita

Treatment of squamous cell carcinoma of the oropharynx is challenging because of its effects on speech and swallowing, which may affect quality of life. Transoral robotic surgery may be an effective alternative to open surgery. Robotic lateral oropharyngectomy is best suited for early stage oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma, with the goal of avoiding or reducing the use or dose of adjuvant therapies. Successful robotic lateral oropharyngectomy requires appropriate training, detailed preoperative planning, organized operating room setup to obtain exposure, an understanding of the pertinent

A previously healthy 49-year-old woman presented with progressive motor deficit. The complaints started the year before with weakness of the right arm. Over the subsequent months, she developed weakness in the left arm, followed by both legs, and, finally, difficulty speaking, with nasal voice, and swallowing. It was increasingly difficult to attend to her chores, and, by the time she sought medical attention, she needed help with all daily activities. In the last few weeks, she also complained of diffuse joint and muscle pain. Medical and family history were unremarkable.

A plunging ranula is a soft-tissue mass stemming from a mucous extravasation cyst of the sublingual gland which can herniate through the mylohyoid muscle. We describe a case in which a 14-year-old girl presented with a rapidly expanding mass on the floor of her mouth affecting her ability to swallow and speak and causing tracheal compression. The patient was initially managed conservatively with antibiotics and steroids; however, the mass continued to expand necessitating emergent bedside incision and drainage and subsequent surgical intervention. The pathophysiology and management options for

The tongue is an important oral structure that affects speech, position of teeth, periodontal tissue, nutrition, swallowing, nursing, and certain social activities. Ankyloglossia (tongue tie) is a congenital anomaly characterized by an abnormally short, thick lingual frenulum which affects movement of tongue. Though the effect of ankyloglossia in general appears to be a minor condition, but a major difference exists concerning the guidelines for tongue-tie division. There are no accepted practical criteria for the management of such condition, and hence this paper aims at bringing all the comp

We present the case of a 28-year-old gentleman who presented with weakness and wasting in the right arm. He complained about painful cramps in his left leg but there were no sensory, visual or swallowing problems. Neurological examination was significant for asymmetric weakness of both upper and lower limbs and deep tendon reflexes were asymmetrically brisk. Initial laboratory investigations, MRI brain and MRI spine were normal. Electromyography revealed active denervation and chronic neurogenic motor unit action potential. Myokymic discharges were noted in the left deltoid muscle.

The presence of a large palatal or maxillary defect after partial or total maxillectomy for tumor, trauma or congenital deformation poses a challenge to prosthodontists, particularly when the use of an implant cannot be considered. This case report described the use of an air valve in a hollow silicone obturator to manufacture an inflatable obturator that could be extended further into undercut area to retain itself. The inflatable obturator exhibited adequate retention, stability and border sealing, thereby improving the masticatory, pronunciation and swallowing functions of patients. It may b

Benign tumors of the esophagus are uncommon, representing <0.5% of esophageal tumors. Fibrolipomas are a subset of benign fibrovascular tumors, which present with dysphagia, odynophagia, and substernal fullness. These intraluminal tumors can become elongated and molded into a long pedunculated polyp by constant peristaltic movements. They can cause esophageal obstruction if large and long enough and can cause asphyxiation if they become lodged into the glottis. A barium swallow is the main diagnostic tool; treatment is surgical via a transoral, transcervical, or transthoracic approach. We repo

Refractory symptoms in Parkinson disease show good response to deep brain stimulation (DBS). This procedure improves United Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale scores and reduces dyskinesias, whereas speech and swallowing dysfunction typically do not improve and may even worsen. Rarely, DBS can cause idiosyncratic dystonias of muscle groups, including those of the neck and throat. The authors describe a patient experiencing stridor and dysphagia with confirmed pulmonary restriction and aspiration following subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulator adjustment, with a resolution of symptoms and sig

A 41-year-old man with cleft palate presented with a wide dehiscence and missing teeth. Six implants had been placed for fabrication of an overdenture, which was unsatisfactory. A bar was waxed and cast for connection to the implants; precision attachments were placed laterally for retention. A fixed partial denture was fabricated, and milled crowns were fabricated at the molar region to provide a guiding plane for insertion of a removable palatal obturator. Good swallowing and speech outcomes were achieved. This technique provided functional and esthetic benefits, enhanced oral hygiene, and i

Type II methemoglobinemia is a somatic deficiency of cytochrome b5 reductase with severe global neurologic impairment. We report a novel mutation in exon 3 of the CYB5R3 gene on chromosome 22 consisting of homozygous 1-base pair (bp) deletion noted as c.215delG; p.Gly72AlafsX100. The patient had improvement of gross motor skills, chewing, and swallowing that may be due to the initiation of daily ascorbic acid therapy. We hypothesize that a possible response to ascorbic acid may be related to the effect of making additional ferrous iron available for its role as a cofactor in carnitine synthesi

The phenotype of partial trisomy 9p includes global developmental delay, microcephaly, bulbous nose, downturned oral commissures, malformed ears, hypotonia, and severe cognitive and language disorders. We present a case report and a comparative review of clinical findings on this condition, focusing on speech-language development, cognitive abilities and swallowing evaluation. We suggest that oropharyngeal dysphagia should be further investigated, considering that pulmonary and nutritional disorders affect the survival and quality of life of the patient. As far as we know, this is the first st

BACKGROUND: Diseases of the superior laryngeal nerve occur more often than thought. Paresis of the superior laryngeal nerve is one of the most frequent causes of dysfunction of this nerve, mainly occurring in the context of thyroid surgery.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: To avoid iatrogenic damage of the superior laryngeal nerve, knowledge of the exact topography of the course of this nerve is necessary. A lesion of the superior laryngeal nerve may be associated with changes in the voice as well as with swallowing disorders with aspiration. Diagnosis of this disease is clinically challenging because

Velopharyngeal incompetence is a contributing factor for speech disorders, and other frequently accompanying disorders, such as cleft palate, congenital paralysis of the soft palate and cerebrovascular disease. A palatal lift prosthesis (PLP) has been fabricated for managing velopharyngeal incompetence to improve speech. Because of discomfort, such as difficulty in swallowing or vomiting reflex, while wearing the PLP, rigorous adjustment is required. Patients may have difficulty becoming accustomed to using the prosthesis. This article reports on a newly developed device, the nasal speaking va

BACKGROUND: Dentures in the oesophagus have been associated with various complications; however, Horner's syndrome following denture impaction has not been reported in our locality.
CASE REPORT: Horner's syndrome developed in a 26-year-old woman following accidental swallowing of an upper denture which then became impacted in the oesophagus. The denture was retrieved via cervical oesophagotomy. The syndrome abated completely by the seventh day post-surgery. The clinical features of Horner's syndrome are discussed.
CONCLUSION: Compression of the stellate ganglion, with resultant Horner's synd

A significant number of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) experience sialorrhea. This problem can cause social embarrassment, and because saliva pools in the mouth, may lead to aspiration pneumonia. Sialorrhea in PD is thought to be caused by impaired or infrequent swallowing, rather than hypersecretion. Oral medications, botulinum toxin injections, surgical interventions, radiotherapy, speech therapy, and trials of devices may be used to treat sialorrhea in PD, but few controlled trials have been published. This article reviews current knowledge regarding the frequency, etiology, assessm
