The macular microvascular changes in children with a history of retinopathy of prematurity treated with intravitreal Bevacizumab injection using optical coherence tomography angiography: a retrospective cohort.

OBJECTIVE: Our study aims to evaluate and compare the macular microvascular condition of the intravitreal Bevacizumab (IVB)-treated retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) cases to the preterm cases without ROP and spontaneously regressed ROPs. METHODS: It is a retrospective cohort of 50 premature neonates visited from 2016 to 2017 for ROP screening in Nikookari Eye Hospital and recalled for re-evaluation in 2022. These patients were classified into three groups based on their medical documents: 1. Preterm cases without ROP (PT), 2. Spontaneously regressed ROPs (SR), and 3. IVB-treated ROPs (IVB). A

Effect of intravitreal injections due to neovascular age-related macular degeneration on retinal nerve fiber layer thickness and minimum rim width: a cross sectional study.

PURPOSE: The present study tested the hypothesis that repeated anti-VEGF injections are associated with reduced retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and minimum rim width (MRW) of the optic nerve head. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Sixty-six patients with a history of intravitreal injections due to neovascular age-related macular degeneration were included. RNFL and MRW were measured using optical coherence tomography (Spectralis OCT, Heidelberg Engineering, Heidelberg, Germany). RESULTS: Mean global RNFL was 90.62 μm and both RNFL as well as MRW significantly decreased with advanced age (p = 0.005 and

Short-term response to anti-VEGF as indicator of visual prognosis in refractory age-related macular degeneration.

BACKGROUND: Some patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) respond insufficiently to anti-VEGF treatment despite maximal monthly intravitreal injections. Their short-term response between injections was investigated for extent and visual prognosis. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Monocentric retrospective observational study. 45 eyes from 41 patients with refractory nAMD (who previously received at least 12 months of anti-VEGF treatment), evaluated by optical coherence tomography (OCT) in between monthly anti-VEGF injections. The fluid profile on OCT was evaluated before, 1 week aft

Integrated transcriptional-phenotypic analysis captures systemic immunomodulation following antiangiogenic therapy in renal cell carcinoma patients.

BACKGROUND: The combination of immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) with standard therapies is becoming a common approach for overcoming resistance to cancer immunotherapy in most human malignancies including metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC). In this regard, insights into the immunomodulatory properties of antiangiogenic agents may help designing multidrug schedules based on specific immune synergisms. METHODS: We used orthogonal transcriptomic and phenotyping platforms combined with functional analytic pipelines to elucidate the immunomodulatory effect of the antiangiogenic agent pazopanib

2-year outcomes of ranibizumab versus laser therapy for the treatment of very low birthweight infants with retinopathy of prematurity (RAINBOW extension study): prospective follow-up of an open label, randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Intravitreal injection of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) inhibitors is increasingly used to treat retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in the absence of evidence about long-term efficacy or safety. In this prespecified interim analysis of the RAINBOW extension study, we aimed to prospectively assess outcomes at age 2 years. METHODS: RAINBOW was an open-label, randomised trial that compared intravitreal ranibizumab (at 0·1 mg and 0·2 mg doses) with laser therapy for the treatment of ROP in very low birthweight infants (<1500 g). Families of the 201 infants that completed the

Peripheral blood CD163(+) monocytes and soluble CD163 in dry and neovascular age-related macular degeneration.

Macrophages are the main infiltrating immune cells in choroidal neovascularization (CNV), a hallmark of the human wet, or neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Due to their plasticity and ability to adapt to the local microenvironment in a tissue-dependent manner, macrophages display polar functional phenotypes characterized by their cell surface markers and their cytokine profiles. We found accumulation of hemoglobin-scavenging cluster of differentiation 163 (CD163)(+) macrophages in laser-induced CNV lesions and higher expression of CD163(+) monocytes in the peripheral blood on

Effects of intravitreal bevacizumab in Gram-positive and Gram-negative models of ocular inflammation.

BACKGROUND: Exogenous endophthalmitis is a potential complication of intraocular surgery and frequently results in visual impairment. Current treatment involves administration of intravitreal (IVT) antibiotics with or without vitrectomy surgery. Evidence for the use of adjunctive anti-inflammatory agents is conflicting. We set out to determine if bevacizumab, a humanized monoclonal IgG1 antibody targeted against vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), has anti-inflammatory properties in experimental models of Gram-positive and Gram-negative inflammation. METHODS: BALB/c mice were subjected
