Tocainide is an effective oral antiarrhythmic agent. We report a 77-year-old man who developed agranulocytosis and anemia while receiving tocainide therapy. These hematologic abnormalities were detected on routine evaluation six weeks after beginning tocainide therapy. The absolute granulocyte count decreased to 50/mm3 (0.05 X 10(9)/L). The anemia was mild; hemoglobin count, 10.9 g/dL (109 g/L). Although a higher prevalence of antiphospholipid autoantibodies (aPL) has been observed in some cohorts of sickle cell disease (SCD) patients, the clinical risk factors for the development of aPL and its associated complications remain unclear. Mutations of the AML1 gene are frequent molecular abnormalities in minimally differentiated acute myeloblastic leukemia (M0 AML), a rare type of AML. In this retrospective multicenter study, morphologic, immunophenotypical, cytogenetic, and molecular features of 59 de novo M0 AML cases were analyzed and correlated to AML1 mutations. We describe the first case of disseminated infection with Mycobacterium genavense in an HIV-seronegative patient with a chronic haematologic … acid-fast bacilli, and cultures of both bone marrow and blood grew M. genavense. The patient's CD4+ cell count was approximately 100 microL(-1). Treatment with clarithromycin, ethambutol and rifabutin resulted in improvement of anaemia and general health as well as in regression of lymphadenopathy and splenomegaly.

Intraperitoneal administration of lipopolysaccharide to mice induced a marked reduction of CD5+ B cells in the peritoneal cavity. The reduction was not induced by intravenous, subcutaneous, or oral administration of lipopolysaccharide. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: During the last few years, there have been several studies on T cell subsets in polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) and giant cell arteritis (GCA), with conflicting results. Whereas some authors have found normal values of circulating CD8+ T cells, others have found a decreased number. Furthermore, in some studies, the level of CD8+ cells was found to be related to disease activity, and it has been proposed that a decrease of CD8+ T cells be used as a diagnostic criterion for PMR. The purpose of our study was to determine the value of assessing T cell subsets in PMR and GCA.
