Reproducible and Reliable Method for Syndesmotic Screw Fixation: An MRI-Based Cross-Sectional Image Analysis.

Ankle arthrosis may be an unexpected potential result in syndesmotic injuries because of instability and malreduction. For anatomical reduction and stabilization, a reliable and stable reference point is crucial to correctly place syndesmotic screw. The aim of this study was to determine a reliable reference point and to quantify the ideal angle for placement of the screw. In this prospective cohort study, 99 healthy volunteers underwent right ankle magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. On the axial sections, the ideal axis of the syndesmotic screw and other reference points were depicted with 4 li

Treatment of Valgus-Impacted and Nondisplaced Femoral Neck Fragility Fractures in the Elderly.

As the life expectancy of the worldwide population increases, the number of hip fractures in the elderly cohort is expected to grow. It is important for surgeons to critically analyze available treatment options for these injuries, with the goal of optimizing outcomes and minimizing complications. Femoral neck fractures make up approximately half of all hip fractures. Nonoperative treatment of valgus-impacted and nondisplaced (Garden I and II) femoral neck fractures has high rates of secondary displacement, osteonecrosis, and nonunion; only patients with notable risk for perioperative complica

Arthroscopic Assisted Percutaneous Screw Fixation of a Postage Stamp Anterior Glenoid Fracture.

Bio-absorbable anchors are widely used for Bankart repair in shoulder instability surgery. Suture anchor placement for labral repair may give rise to osteolysis and/or create stress risers in the glenoid rim, which may be the underlying reasons for glenoid rim fracture with a fracture line passing through previous anchor placement sites, the so-called "postage stamp fracture". Intraarticular fractures of the glenoid have been treated via open reduction and internal fixation through an arthrotomy, which may lead to potential postoperative complications like infection, neurovascular injuries, jo

A comparison of risk profile for orthopaedic operations when utilizing individually wrapped screws (IWS) when compared with sterile screw caddies (screw racks).

INTRODUCTION: There has been a global trend towards individually packaged screws for orthopaedic operations. Traditional practice makes use of screw caddies that require re-sterilization. Individually wrapped screws (IWS) are purported to decrease infection rates and avoid the deleterious effects of repeated screw sterilizations, despite marginal evidence. This review aimed to evaluate the safety, effectiveness and economics of screw caddies with IWS. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The literature was surveyed in a systematic fashion between 1998 and 2017 and all relevant health technology assessments,

Comparison of non-surgical and surgical treatment using absorbable screws in anterior-superior iliac spine avulsion fractures with over 1.5cm displacement.

INTRODUCTION: There is some debate over the best treatment for anterior-superior iliac spine (ASIS) avulsion fractures, although non-surgical treatment can achieve the same results as open surgery. HYPOTHESIS: Absorbable screws can be safely used for ASIS avulsion fractures in children and adolescents. AIM OF THE STUDY: Here, we compared patients on whom no surgery was performed with those who underwent open surgery and investigated the feasibility of using absorbable screws as a new fixation material for treating ASIS avulsion fractures in children and adolescents. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We

Biomechanical analysis for five fixation techniques of Pauwels-III fracture by finite element modeling.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: There are many fixation methods for Pauwels- III fracture, the most common implants are Locking Plate (LP), Dynamic Hip Screw (DHS), Multiple Lag Screw (MLS), and mixed fixture (DHS+MLS) implants, the common procedure is HemiArthroplasty (HA). However, how these fixtures biomechanically function is not clear. The aims of this study are to compare the mechanical behaviors of these five implants by finite element modeling and determinate the most suitable procedure for individuals with Pauwels- III fractures. METHODS: We gathered 20 sets of femur images from CT scans

Lag screw with DHS (LSD) for vertical angle femoral neck fractures in young adults.

Vertical Pauwels Type III fractures of the neck of femur in young patients are difficult fractures to treat. These are usually as a result of high energy trauma which are associated with a significant degree of fracture comminution in the neck of femur. This makes the fracture reduction and fixation difficult. Many fixation methods and implants have been described for use in these fractures but are not without reported complications such as non-union and varus collapse. In this article, we highlight the incidence of fracture comminution in both the anterior and posterior cortices of the femora

Comparison of femoral neck shortening and outcomes between in situ fixation and fixation after reduction for severe valgus-impacted femoral neck fractures.

INTRODUCTION: Severe valgus-impacted femoral neck fractures are associated with femoral neck shortening (FNS). However, no study has focused on the effect of reduction for severe valgus impaction in terms of healing and restoration of the femoral neck length. This study aimed to compare FNS and treatment outcomes of in situ fixation and fixation after reduction for severe valgus-impacted femoral neck fractures in patients aged 65 years or younger. METHODS: This retrospective study included 55 patients who underwent internal fixation with three parallel screws for femoral neck fractures with v

A prospective comparative clinical study on modified screw retained arch bar (SRAB) and conventional Erich's arch bar (CEAB).

INTRODUCTION: Intermaxillary fixation (IMF) is commonly performed in the management of facial skeleton fractures. Various conventional methods like Erich's arch bar and Ivy eyelet wiring are the most commonly employed methods for achieving IMF, but they have their own disadvantages. Conventional Erich's arch bar (CEAB) has been modified recently by making perforations in the spaces between the winglets and securing the arch bar using 1 mm screws. IMF using intraoral modified screw retained arch bar (SRAB) has been introduced for the treatment of mandibular fractures. The aim of this study was
