A 37-year-old man presented to the emergency department with a visor impacted in the left orbit after a motorbike accident. His initial injury appeared to be limited to the orbit. Because the bleeding appeared disproportionate to the orbital injury, an intracranial injury was suspected. Subsequently, on hemicraniotomy, the tip of the visor was found at the bifurcation of the internal carotid artery. The avulsed upper eyelid was found under the frontal lobe. The patient underwent the clipping of internal carotid artery and middle and anterior cerebral artery with replantation of the upper eyeli…

Rhinosinusitis is a common medical problem. Complications involving the orbits or brain are not frequently met. Concomitant involvement of both orbits and the brain is very rare. We here describe a 6-year-old girl who suffered from acute rhinosinusitis and initially, subperiosteal abscesses in both orbits. Bilateral functional endoscopic sinus surgery and drainage of the subperiosteal abscesses through the upper eyelids were done. Pus cultures showed methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. The brain abscesses were found under magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and were treated conservativel…

Hypertrophic pachymeningitis is a rare disorder characterized by meningeal thickness, that can be caused by infection, tumoral infiltration, inflammatory disorders or idiopathic. We report the case of a 40 year-old man that presented with longstanding headache and progressive bilateral visual loss and proptosis. Cranial and orbital magnetic resonance imaging revealed diffuse dural thickness and bilateral extraconal orbital lesion. Extensive investigation did not reveal any systemic condition. Histopathological study after meningeal and orbital biopsy disclosed a chronic inflammatory process co…

Orbital fractures can lead to esthetic deformities and functional impairments, and adequate surgical timing is considered important in obtaining good results from surgery. By means of chart review, a retrospective analysis was carried out in 108 consecutive cases of pure orbital fractures to investigate the differences in surgical timing and the correlations with patient age and clinical and radiographic findings. In this analysis, surgical timing of pure orbital fractures was strongly related to the combination of parameters such as anatomical location of the fracture, eventual exposure of th…

Over the past 3 years the authors have used modified minimally invasive endoscopic techniques in the surgical correction of craniosynostosis. For selected patients, these techniques offer an alternative to traditional techniques, minimizing postoperative morbidity and the need for cranial banding. Long-term follow-up will be needed to assess the ultimate efficacy of these techniques. Traditional techniques for repair of craniosynostosis have historically had a record of excellent aesthetic results with acceptable morbidity. Ultimately, each patient is best served by a customized plan, develope

AIM: The purpose of the study was to assess the efficacy of bone grafting from the mandibular outer cortex for reconstructing the orbital walls.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Bone grafting was performed in 75 patients. The site the transplants were harvested from were: A: mental region, B: area posterior to the mental foramen, C: ramus region. In order to obtain the appropriate curvature for the orbital floor, proper selection of the donor area is required. The bony defect size was confirmed pre-operatively from 3D-CT data. Bone, characteristically 2-3 mm thick, was harvested from each area and graft…

BACKGROUND: Patients with adult T-cell leukemia (ATL) may have eyelid lymphoma, uveitis, or cytomegalovirus retinitis due to being immunocom … omography and magnetic resonance imagining (MRI) showed that the mass lesions extended to the right orbit and both nasal cavities. MRI also demonstrated choroidal thickening in the left eye.
CONCLUSION: This case documents that ATL cells may cause severe uveitis and invade multiple ocular tissues such as the iris, eyelid, choroids, and orbit.

Orbital volume augmentation to address enophthalmos and hollowing of the superior sulcus has been described with a variety of materials and from a variety of approaches.(1-4) A common location for volume augmentation is the inferomedial orbital wall; this surface is often the one that was expanded related to orbital trauma, and it is easily accessed through hidden conjunctival or caruncular incisions.

Orbital roof fractures are uncommon, and traumatic intraorbital encephalocele formation is a very rare complication of this type of injury. We treated 43 pediatric patients with orbital roof fractures at our center over a 4-year period. The aim of this study was to retrospectively investigate conditions that may lead to intraorbital encephalocele formation in children with orbital roof fractures. Each case was reviewed, and the cause of injury, associated clinical and computerized tomography findings, the Glasgow Coma Scale score on admission, neurological status, other bodily injuries, hospit…

Physical examination of a 9-year-old girl with a 2-month history of swelling of the left orbit demonstrated an orbital mass, blepharoptosis, and proptosis. Computed tomography revealed a 2 x 3-cm mass in the superior left orbit that expanded orbital dimensions. Radiography showed abnormalities in the parietal and frontal bones and distal right tibia. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated an 8.5-cm abnormality of the marrow space of the right mid-tibia. Bone marrow biopsy was unremarkable. Orbital and tibial biopsies showed a nonspecific chronic inflammation. Idiopathic inflammation that invo…
