OBJECTIVES: We explored possible correlates of cigarette smoking and their associations with levels of smoking among a sample of Chinese men who have sex with men (MSM). We also explored the syndemic associations of substance use and psychosocial problems on sexual risk behaviors.
METHODS: Cross-sectional data collection from 404 MSM in Shanghai, China.
RESULTS: MSM exhibit a high prevalence of smoking (66.3%). Both light and heavy smoking were associated with alcohol and drug use, depression, intimate partner violence, sexual attitudes, and gay identity (though the associations for light sm

Research on the effects of adolescent physical abuse, witnessing domestic violence, and perceptions of community violence have generally, with few exceptions, found them to be predictive of subsequent negative behavioral outcomes, such as substance abuse, crime, and other problem behaviors. Less frequently studied is the relationship of these adverse adolescent experiences to adult socioeconomic statuses. This study utilizes longitudinal self-report data from the National Youth Survey Family Study to investigate how these three factors influence future socioeconomic statuses: marital status, e…

Perivascular epithelioid cell neoplasms, also known as PEComas, are unique mesenchymal tumors exhibiting perivascular epithelioid cell differentiation, characterized by a mixed myogenic and melanocytic phenotype. PEComas arising in visceral organs outside of the kidney, liver, and lung are rare, and often pose problems in diagnosis. Examples of this neoplasm originating in the adrenal gland are limited. The present report details the clinical and pathologic features of an unusual case of a pure epithelioid PEComa (epithelioid angiomyolipoma) of the adrenal gland exhibiting clinically malignant

Antisocial behavior is associated with low quality of life for the patient and with adverse effects on society and those close to the antisocial patient. However, most patients with antisocial behavior are not seen in treatment settings that focus on their personality but rather in criminal justice settings, substance-abuse treatment, and social welfare settings. This article describes the adaptation and implementation of a highly structured manualized treatment, Impulsive Lifestyle Counseling (ILC), based on the Lifestyle Issues program, a 10-week psychoeducation program studied in prison set

INTRODUCTION: Parkinson's disease (PD) is associated with mood and behavioral symptoms contributing to morbidity and reduced quality of life of the patients. Most characteristic are depression, anxiety and impulse control disorder.
DEVELOPMENT: Identification and treatment of neuropsychiatric symptoms is necessary for an appropriate management of PD. Affective symptoms may be the initial manifestation of PD, are highly prevalent and pathogenically complex. Impulse control disorders are usually not a spontaneous complaint, so asking about these symptoms may be the only way to detect and treat

Multiple behavioral change is an exciting and evolving research area, albeit one that presents analytic challenges to investigators. This manuscript considers the problem of modeling jointly trajectories for two or more possibly non-normally distributed dependent variables, such as marijuana smoking and risky sexual activity, collected longitudinally. Of particular scientific interest is applying such modeling to elucidate the nature of the interaction, if any, between an intervention and personal characteristics, such as sensation seeking and impulsivity. The authors describe three analytic a

Despite increasing research on children's exposure to intimate partner aggression/violence (IPAV), and co-occurrence of IPAV and maltreatment, little is known about IPAV in at-risk and maltreating families. We explored the nature of IPAV in 554 homes where children were identified as at risk or reported for maltreatment and examined differences between emotional and behavioral outcomes for children in homes where one or both intimate partners is the alleged perpetrator of IPAV. We found in this sample that IPAV primarily took the form of verbal aggression with differences in perpetrator gender

A large body of research indicates that children born very preterm are at increased risk for neurobehavioral impairments; however, research examining outcome for extremely preterm (EP) children is limited. This chapter will review the literature focusing on early development delay, general intellectual functioning, specific cognitive skills, basic educational skills, and behavioral and emotional functioning in children born <26 weeks' gestation or with a birth weight <750 g. Findings are generally consistent and indicate that a large proportion of EP children and their families will face major

The aim of this study was to test for sex differences in the role of physical and relational victimization in anxiety and depression development through a randomized prevention trial. 448 seven-year-old boys and girls were randomly assigned to the Good Behavior Game intervention, a two-year universal classroom based intervention aimed at reducing disruptive behavior problems and creating a safe and predictable classroom environment, or to a control condition. Assessments of self-reported physical and relational victimization at age 10 years, and self-reported major depressive disorder, general

The prevalence and comorbidity of internalizing and externalizing syndromes was investigated in a clinical sample of children (n = 77) with dyslexia. In the normoriented broadband-screening of the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) the rate of behavioral disorders is four times higher than in the standardisation sample. As a consequence of specific administrative prevalence the children have--in contrast to prospective studies--more internalizing than externalizing problems (according to the secondary scales of the CBCL). Psychiatric syndromes have been diagnosed in 66.2 percent: most frequently

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to summarize new data on etiology and clinical features of Klinefelter syndrome in order to derive research priorities.
METHODS: This study was conducted using critical reviews of selective topics, emphasizing less well-recognized clinical findings.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: The phenotype of the prototypic 47,XXY case is well recognized: seminiferous tubule dysgenesis and androgen deficiency. Less well appreciated is the varied expressivity of 47,XXY Klinefelter syndrome, in particular neurological/cognitive perturbations like language and behavioral prob

The ability to suppress or override competing attentional and behavioral responses is a key component of cognitive processes. This ability continues to develop throughout childhood and appears to be disrupted in a number of childhood disorders (e.g., attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder and Tourette syndrome). At least two brain regions have been implicated repeatedly in these disorders--the frontal lobes and the basal ganglia. The common problem in cognitive control and overlap in implicated brain regions across disorders suggest a single underlying biological mechanism. At the same time,

A family with X-linked mental retardation characterized by severe mental retardation, speech and behavioral abnormalities, and seizures in affected male patients has been found to have a G1141C transversion in the creatine-transporter gene SLC6A8. This mutation results in a glycine being replaced by an arginine (G381R) and alternative splicing, since the G-->C transversion occurs at the -1 position of the 5' splice junction of intron 7. Two female relatives who are heterozygous for the SLC6A8 mutation also exhibit mild mental retardation with behavior and learning problems. Male patients with

Aggressive agitation, agitation and insomnia with generalized anxiety are commonly observed in Alzheimer's disease. These symptoms remain a principal problem in the clinical management of elderly patients. Neuroleptics are commonly the selected medication for controlling severe aggression, especially the violent out bursts often seen in demented patients. Their use is frequently complicated by side effects, particularly somnolence and confusion. Valpromide and Carbamazepine have been efficacy alternatives and very well tolerated. We report eight cases of demented patients who presented an agit

The results of a 2-year treatment study of children with learning problems are reported. During the first treatment year, half of the children participated in a multifaceted neurocognitive treatment and the other half in a treatment that provided supervision of school tasks and peer group support. During the second treatment year, all children participated in the neurocognitive treatment. The participants were 74 Chilean children 6 to 11 years old. The issues under investigation were the effect of treatment duration, and the relationship between pretreatment neurocognitive and behavioral chara

A significant but often overlooked aspect of the circumplex structure of the domain of interpersonal functioning is its systematically continuous ordering of the quality of the behavioral variations addressed. It is a domain, in other words, explicitly lacking in categorical boundaries wherein a given behavior can be sharply discriminated from others proximal to it within a shared circumplex space; any identified border is at best a "fuzzy" one characterized by blending and interpenetration. It is argued that this observation has extended generalizability in respect to the organization of pers

1025 females and 1087 males in grades 7-12 in Alberta high schools completed measures of emotional and behavioral problems and suicidal behaviors, and of frequency of sexual assaults outside of school. Both males and females experiencing a high number of sexual assaults in the previous 6 months were significantly more likely to have clinical profiles on measures of conduct disorder, somatic disorder, and emotional disorder. 13.2% of 53 girls with frequent, unwanted sexual contact had made more than two suicidal gestures or suicide attempts in the previous 6 months, compared with 1.3% of 783 gi

66 children attending first grade at a special school for educationally subnormal children were examined medically and psychologically. Classification was done according to ICD-10. In addition, the parents were asked to rate their children's behavior with the "Child Behavior Checklist" by Achenbach and Edelbrock. The most common symptoms rated in this group of 6- to 8-year-old children were lack of concentration, speech and language problems, hyperactivity, demand for attention and arguing. The mean total score (cut-off score: 30) and the number of crucial items (cut-off score: at least two cr

Recent developments in alcoholism : an official publication of the American Medical Society on Alcoholism, the Research Society on Alcoholism, and the National Council on Alcoholism1993eng
During the past decade, the concerns of psychological research within alcohol studies have been far ranging and even within the areas of personality and neurocognition, the literature is voluminous and many faceted. This chapter focuses on aspects of the personality system that appear to increase vulnerability to excessive alcohol or other drug use or the experience of use-related problems as well as issues related to temporal stability and change in intrapersonal development and drinking behaviors. The bulk of the neurocognitive literature reviewed deals with the impairments that accrue as a

Angelman syndrome (AS) is a genetic disorder associated with a deletion on chromosome 15. Behavior problems among children with AS include sleep difficulties. Data are presented on the successful treatment of a sleep-wake schedule disorder (SWSD) in a 9-year-old boy with AS. The treatment program included behavioral and pharmacological components. During baseline, the child slept a mean of 1.9 hours per night and 1.3 hours during the day; night sleep was increased to a mean of 8.3 hours and day sleep was reduced to a mean of .08 hours after introduction of the full-treatment program.
