This overview article covers the techniques that aim to prevent lid retraction after lower blepharoplasties. After a brief review of applied anatomy (anterior, middle, posterior lamella), the causes of blepharochalasis and of postoperative lid retraction are addressed. OBJECTIVE. To develop a laparoscopic-assisted technique for the treatment of genital prolapsus. MODALITY. With the Kapandji's technique the vagina and the uterine isthmus is suspended transversally with a subperitoneal prosthesis. This technique has been favourably assessed in comparison with posterior suspension to the lumbo-sacral junction and is easily performed laparoscopically. Details of the technique will be given. We report on a male who received a bone-marrow allograft from his HLA identical sister for acute myelogenous leukaemia. After transplantation, the patient suffered from refractoriness to the transfusions of HLA-matched platelets and a strong platelet-specific antibody, anti-HPA-2b, of IgG1 subclass was demonstrated in the patient's serum. A polymerase chain reaction for the detection of tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) RNA in ticks was developed. Two pairs of primers for nested PCR were selected from the 5'-NCR and the 5'-terminus of the C protein coding region, which are highly conserved among the TBEV isolates sequenced so far. Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) is the surgery most often performed for sleep apnea syndrome (SAS). However, good results with UPPP, demonstrated by polysomnography, have been reported in only 50% of cases. Old mice with thymus involution were treated intraperitoneally with a live vaccine containing a mesogenic strain of attenuated Newcastle Disease Virus or with Mannozym (M, 1% zymosan suspension). One day after the treatments mice were infected with lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) intracerebrally. The fatal course of the consequent LCMV infection was stimulated by each of the pretreatments, indicating that the cellular immune response was stimulated. The results are compared with results of experiments carried out on suckling, young adult and old mice in similar experimental systems.

A technique for Teflon injection is described that allows the laryngologist to assess vocal fold vibration during general anesthesia. A tracheostomy tube fitted with a rostral air line allows translaryngeal airflow. During endoscopy with a bivalved laryngoscope, the cords are approximated manually. Characteristics of a new erythrocyte aggregameter were evaluated in 7 patients with monoclonal dysglobulinemia (5 multiple myeloma, 1 Waldenström disease, 1 CLL with monoclonal immunoglobulin) treated by plasma exchange. This apparatus measures modifications of light retro-diffused by erythrocytes suspension after shear arrest. Seventeen patients with ptosis as a feature of chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia were managed in accordance with a new protocol. A retrospective review of our experience with the artificial urinary sphincter in 32 women is presented. All patients had a history of recurrent urinary incontinence after failed bladder suspension procedures. Of 32 devices 31 were functioning, with an average followup of 2.5 years, and 91 per cent of the patients were dry without pads. Mechanical complications requiring surgical repair occurred in 21 per cent of the patients. A case of severe immune haemolytic anaemia in a 54-year-old man suffering from Mycoplasma pneumonia is presented. A strongly positive direct Coombs test with erythrocyte bound IgG, C3d and C4 was demonstrated during the haemolytic process. In the present study, neuraminidase activity was discovered in 90.0% of P. acnes strains isolated from acne lesions compared with 72.7% of strains from normal human skin. A surgical technique is described for correcting the drooping alar rim associated with cleft lip. An incision is made on the cleft-side alar rim such that the rims will be symmetrical. After extensive undermining between the dorsal skin and alar cartilages, a suspension suture is positioned so as to pull the drooping point of the nostril rim in an anteromediocranial direction to the septovestibular junction on the normal side.
