BACKGROUND: There has been disagreement over the significance of bacteriuria in nursing home residents.
METHODS: During an 18-month period, the risks and consequences of bacteriuria (BU) in 195 residents of a skilled nursing facility without indwelling catheters were examined. Clinical and epidemiologic data and urine for culture were collected every 2 weeks to identify risk factors, symptoms, and occurrences of BU. A mean of 23 cultures per resident was collected.

We examined the value of the dipstick test for detecting pyuria and bacteriuria in the diagnosis of urinary tract infection (UTI). The dipstick esterase test could be quickly assessed and could easily detect leukocyte esterase in the urine. This was well correlated with the conventional sedimentation method. The dipstick nitrate reduction method for detecting bacteriuria, however, was not well correlated with the urine culture method. These findings suggested that the dipstick esterase test was a useful method for detecting pyuria in the diagnosis of UTI, but not the dipstick nitrate reduction

We managed 246 patients with bladder dysfunction due to the first stroke in our hospital between January, 1983 and December, 1988. Of these 221 were in the chronic stage of stroke. The treatment problem of urinary tract post-tuberculous changes is not completely solved. Current methods do not always give good results and are accompanied by some complications. The authors describe their own modified method of hydrostatic intravesical distension of the tuberculotic-cirrhotic bladder, using epidural anesthesia, and worked out indications for it. The results show an increase in the bladder volume from 100-120 to 250-300 ml with a decreased urination frequency in 8 patients. The method occurred to be very convenient-to-use due to the absence of any complications.

Forty-five patients with hydronephrosis due to pelviureteric junction stricture were operated on at Kaohsiung Medical College Hospital between 1971 and 1986. In unilateral cases, the left kidney was affected more frequently than the right (24 to 13), while 8 (18%) had bilateral ureteropelvic stricture. We report on 44 consecutive patients who underwent 1-stage hypospadias repair based on a urethral splent (silicone pleated stent). The severity of hypospadias ranged from subcoronal in 12 cases and distal in 23 to midshaft in 4 and penoscrotal in 5. In the first 15 patients of this series the splent was used with a suprapubic tube. All patients were able to void within the first 36 hours postoperatively. BACKGROUND: ERAS guidelines recommend early removal of urinary drainage after colorectal surgery to reduce the risk of catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI). Another recommendation is the postoperative use of epidural analgesia (EA). In many types of surgery, EA was shown to increase the risk of postoperative urinary retention (POUR). We report a case of pseudo-renal failure caused by urinary ascites due to spontaneous bladder rupture following transurethral resection of a bladder tumour (TUR-BT). OBJECTIVE: We report new hydronephrosis or VUR (vesicoureteral reflux) in patients with end filling pressures >40 cm for at least 1 year after bladder neck surgery without augmentation for neurogenic incontinence.
MATERIALS: Consecutive children with neurogenic sphincteric incompetency had bladder neck surgery without augmentation. Postoperative renal sonography and fluoroscopic urodynamics were done at 6 months, 12 months, and then annually.
