Recent models of spiking neuronal networks have been trained to perform behaviors in static environments using a variety of learning rules, with varying degrees of biological realism. Seth's claim that only biological or biological-like systems can be conscious leaves open the question of what renders only some organisms conscious. We address this question by pointing to the material, ontogenetic, memory, and evaluative affordances of living organisms and arguing that evolved, minimal consciousness requires complex cognitive-affective architecture for which these biological affordances are obligatory. Conscious thinking of humans cannot be separated from minimal consciousness, and non-biological AI robots' computations do not render these operations conscious.

Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) is a common upper airway inflammatory disorder, characterized by persistent inflammation of the sinonasal mucosa and nasal polyp formation. The pivotal roles of interleukin (IL)-4/IL-13 signaling in CRSwNP pathogenesis is increasingly recognized, evidenced by the remarkable clinical success of biologics targeting this pathway. This review provides a concise overview of the IL-4/IL-13 pathway in CRSwNP, encompassing its molecular architecture, pathogenic mechanisms, current targeted therapies, and emerging therapeutic strategies.

We describe the in vivo emergence of resistance to ceftazidime/avibactam via modification of AmpC in a clinical Klebsiella aerogenes isolate during therapy with this combination. Paired ceftazidime/avibactam-susceptible/resistant isolates were obtained before and during ceftazidime/avibactam treatment. Whole genome sequencing revealed a differential mutation in AmpC (R148W) in the ceftazidime/avibactam-resistant isolate. Molecular cloning and structural studies confirmed the impact of this substitution, which affects the architecture of the H10 helix, on the evolved resistant phenotype.

Recapitulating human NEC using animal models has been insightful in dissecting the signaling pathways, immune-mediated mechanisms, genetic signatures, and the intestinal architecture of NEC. This protocol describes an in vivo murine NEC model, using hypoxia and formula containing lipopolysaccharide and enteric bacteria derived from an infant with NEC. Lobular capillary hemangiomas (LCHs) are benign vascular lesions of the skin, oral cavity, and, rarely, the nasal cavity that are histologically characterized by capillary proliferation and a lobular architecture. The etiology of LCH is not well understood, but the possible underlying factors include trauma, hormonal influences, and angiogenic growth factors. This case report describes the spontaneous complete regression of an LCH without further surgery although it was incompletely excised. To our knowledge, this is a rare case for a middle-aged man.

Minimally invasive and percutaneous techniques used to repair deformities of the forefoot have considerably developed recently. Like standard osteotomies, these techniques must take advantage of the mechanical advances made in the restoration of the foot's architecture. Instead of an endpoint, these techniques represent an additional tool implemented towards a rapid functional, post-operative recovery. This review describes the power of this surgery, details its techniques and lists its indications. We also report our own experience and review the recent literature.

The issue of violence in prisons concerns the people detained there, the conditions of the imprisonment and the relations which are established between the prisoners and the guards. The deprivation of liberty in prison, by suppressing desire, stirs up violence. Security contingency measures are not sufficient to control aggressive urges. Violence in prison stems from the internal regulations, the architecture of the building, the organisation of the surveillance and from the psychopathological dynamics of the deprivations resulting from being locked up.

Herein we report a robust and easy method for detecting cesium metal ion (Cs(+)) in partially aqueous solutions using the fluorescence quenching of 2,4-bis[4-(N,N-dihydroxyethylamino)phenyl]squaraine. This squaraine dye was found to be both highly sensitive (low limits of detection) and selective (limited response to other metals) for cesium ion detection. The detection is likely based on the metal complexing to the dihydroxyethanolamine moieties, which disrupts the donor-acceptor-donor architecture and leads to efficient quenching.

We report a divergent ependymal tumor of the posterior fossa (ependymoblastoma/anaplastic ependymoma) observed in an 8-year-old boy. The tumor showed the histological pattern typical of an ependymoblastoma (tubular-papillary fetaloid architecture with stratification of the tumor cells) next to areas in which findings typical of an anaplastic ependymoma were detected. The immunohistochemical study confirmed our diagnostic suspicion, allowing us to establish a differential diagnosis with other entities such as medulloblastoma, medulloepithelioma, atypical rhabdoid/teratoid tumor, or metastases.

Columnar cell alteration in the breast encompasses a spectrum of pathologic changes ranging from simple columnar cell change to more complex columnar cell hyperplasia with and without atypia to in situ carcinoma, often with a micropapillary architecture. For reasons that remain unclear, the columnar cell lesions are associated with tubular carcinomas and lobular carcinoma in situ. Therefore it is important to be familiar with the spectrum of changes and the associated lesions, especially in breast core biopsies for further management.
