[Polyneuropathy and epileptic seizures in a family with acute intermittent porphyria].

Report on clinical and electrophysiological findings in four members of a family with acute intermittent porphyria in the remission period. One patient had suffered from repeated epileptic seizures of the grand-mal type since the age of 24 years. Generalized and multifocal epileptic potentials were found in her EEG. Two other members of the family, a man and a woman, were found electromyographically and neurographically to have a florid neuropathy with damage to the axon and the myelin sheath. Only the female patient showed manifest clinical signs of the polyneuropathy. The 4th member, who yea…

[Conjugal psoriasis and its relation to histocompatibility antigens. A family study].

The higher risk of the occurrence of psoriasis vulgaris in the progeny of conjugal psoriasis marriages was repeatedly reported. In this paper a family, where the parents and both the children are suffering from psoriasis is described. The disease occurs also in some of the blood relatives of the father and mother. The occurrence of the disease and the segregation of the HLA antigens was followed in the kinship. It seems that a genetic factor linked to the HLA system influences the developement of psoriasis vulgaris.

Space-time and family characteristics of meningococcal disease and haemophilus meningitis.

Significant space-time clustering was found for cases of meningococcal disease. This result was entirely accounted for by the occurrence of a small number of sibling pairs, and clustering was no longer found when these were omitted from the analysis. Meningococcal disease should still be regarded as potentially communicable between siblings. However, in this region of England the current level of infectivity of the disease outside the family is low. Space-time clustering was not convincingly demonstrated for haemophilus meningitis. This emphasizes that, even with diseases of known microbial ae…

[Congenital centronuclear myopathy. Two morphological variants in one family (author's transl)].

This report deals with a family in which the mother and her two daughters suffer from a congenital, slowly progressive neuromuscular disease. Histological, histochemical and ultrastructural observations of the mother's muscle biopsy reveal the characteristics of the centronuclear myopathy. In this case central nuclei and pericentronuclear abnormalities of muscle fibers are found in almost all fibers. Biopsies obtained of the two daughters show alterations especially of type I-fibers, which often are smaller than normal. The presence of these two forms of centronuclear myopathy in one family in…

Knuckle pads, leukonychia, deafness, and keratosis palmoplantaris: report of a family.

A family is described in which knuckle pads, leukonychia, deafness, and keratosis palmoplantaris are present as a syndrome is several members. This is the second such family reported demonstrating that keratosis palmoplantaris is part of the syndrome. Inheritance pattern is probably autosomal dominant.

Study of a large Anglo-Saxon family with beta-thalassaemia trait.

Study of a large Anglo-Saxon family with beta-thalassaemia trait revealed evidence of consanguinity, moreover both branches of the family shared a Spanish ancestor. The manifestations of the disorder were varied in severity and yet the degree of severity appeared to breed true within any individual part of the family. Our explanation for the inheritance pattern observed in the family was to postulate the existence of two non-allelic genes influencing the rate of beta-chain synthesis.

Haemoglobin D and D thalassaemia. A family report, comprising 18 members.

On the occasion of a double heterozygote case of D haemoglobinopathy/beta-thalassaemia (D thalassaemia) from Epirus (Greece), a family study was performed. It comprised 18 members, belonging to 3 generations, and revealed the presence of an additional D thalassaemia case, 4 D haemoglobinopathy heterozygotes, 5 beta-thalassaemia heterozygotes and 7 normal persons. The D thalassaemia cases were initially considered as Hb D homozygotes, according to their electrophoretic phenotype; the family study, however, showed the true nature of their stigmata. These patients presented with mild jaundice, sp…

Inherited C2 deficiency and systemic lupus erythematosus: studies on a family.

A patient is described in which an inherited defect in the synthesis of C2 complement component coexisted with the disease systemic lupus erythematosus. The family studies show evidence of the autosomal recessive nature of the inheritance of the C2 synthesis defect. Of particular interest was the finding of a great-aunt who also had homozygous C2 deficiency. This great-aunt suffered from discoid lupus erythematosus as well. The occurrence of various autoantibodies in the serum from the family members, the typing for blood groups, HL-A antigens, and some serum protein markers are reported and d…

A family with sex linked optic atrophy : Ophthalmological and neurological aspects.

A large family in which 8 males are affected with apparently sex linked optic atrophy is described. The disease has been present since early childhood, and the visual acuity ranges between 1/60 and 0.4. The fundi are very typical: pale optic discs, frequently with cupping and an abnormal vascularity. In all cases visual fields are normal on the periphery with somewhat enlarged blind spots or paracentral scotomata in the older patients. All patients were investigated electro-ophthalmologically. The clearly abnormal VECPs and the very probably normal ERG in the youngest patient indicate that the …
