Assessment of impact of a skin cancer education session on cosmetology students' knowledge and preparedness to assess future clients for skin lesions.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 50% of cutaneous melanomas go undetected by patient self-inspection, and lesions that go unnoticed are usually located on the scalp, head, and neck. Cosmetologists are able to examine areas difficult to see on self-inspection. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to design and conduct an educational skin cancer screening presentation for cosmetology students and assess preparedness to discuss skin cancer with future clients. METHODS: This cross-sectional study conducted and analyzed in 2017 assessed the efficacy of a skin cancer education presentation among cos

Universal versus selective ultrasound screening for developmental dysplasia of the hip: a single-centre retrospective cohort study.

A total of 28 068 infants were studied to investigate whether universal ultrasound screening for developmental dysplasia of the hip results in fewer delayed presentations than selective screening, and whether the screening protocol affects subsequent treatment. The rate of delayed presentation was not lower with selective screening compared with universal screening but all cases of delayed presentation in this cohort were administrative errors. There were no sonographic errors (false-negatives). The treatment rate was significantly higher with universal screening but infants were treated earli

A New, Direct Measure of Thumb Use in Children After Index Pollicization for Congenital Thumb Hypoplasia.

PURPOSE: After index pollicization for congenital thumb hypoplasia, time-based hand dexterity tests do not indicate whether the new thumb is being used by a child. The Thumb Grasp and Pinch assessment (T-GAP) is a new outcome measure that classifies grasp and pinch styles to quantify use of the new thumb. The goal of this study was to establish concurrent validity and construct validity in the T-GAP. METHODS: Data from children treated with index finger pollicization for congenital thumb hypoplasia were retrospectively reviewed. Measures of strength, range of motion, and scores on the Box and

Cellulitis and Soft Tissue Infections.

Cellulitis and soft tissue infections are a diverse group of diseases that range from uncomplicated cellulitis to necrotizing fasciitis. Management of predisposing conditions is the primary means of prevention. Cellulitis is a clinical diagnosis and thus is made on the basis of history and physical examination. Imaging may be helpful for characterizing purulent soft tissue infections and associated osteomyelitis. Treatment varies according to the type of infection. The foundations of treatment are drainage of purulence and antibiotics, the latter targeted at the infection's most likely cause.

Fifteen-minute consultation: Management of the upper limb in unilateral cerebral palsy.

Children with unilateral cerebral palsy (UCP) have complex health, education and social care needs. Delayed gross motor milestones are the most common presenting feature, and much of the early management focuses on gross motor skills and lower limb management. In later childhood, adolescence and adulthood, upper limb function has significant impact on activity, participation and independence. There is clear pathophysiological rationale and emerging clinical evidence that earlier intervention to improve upper limb function is beneficial. Whereas most children with UCP are managed in secondary c

Prediction of Difficult Airway Among Patients Requiring Endotracheal Intubation in a Tertiary Care Hospital in Eastern Nepal.

INTRODUCTION: Various screening tests are done for predicting difficult laryngoscopy with variable diagnostic accuracy. Difficult laryngoscopy is being considered a surrogate indicator of difficult intubation, though it is not the exact measure of intubation difficulty. Our objectives were to find out the better predictor of difficult laryngoscopy amongst the routinely used tests and also to find the ability of difficult laryngoscopy to predict difficult intubation. METHODS: This prospective, observational study involved 314, ASA I/II adult patients requiring endotracheal intubation. Measurem

Utility of Endoanal Ultrasonography in Assessment of Primary and Recurrent Anal Fistulas and for Detection of Associated Anal Sphincter Defects.

BACKGROUND: Tridimensional endoanal ultrasonography (3D-EAUS) has been used for the assessment of various anorectal lesions. Previous studies have reported good accuracy of 3D-EAUS in preoperative assessment of fistula-in-ano (FIA). This study aimed to assess the diagnostic utility of 3D-EAUS in preoperative evaluation of primary and recurrent FIA and its role in detection of associated anal sphincter (AS) defects. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Prospectively collected data of patients with FIA who were investigated with 3D-EAUS were reviewed. The findings of EAUS were compared with the intraoperative

Cancer Recognition and Screening for Common Breast Disorders and Malignancy.

Breast cancer is predicted to be the most common newly diagnosed cancer in women in 2016. Screening mammography is the most commonly used method for the detection of breast cancer in women of average risk. A genetic risk assessment is recommended for women with a greater than 20% to 25% chance of having a predisposition to breast and ovarian cancer. Evaluation of a breast mass begins with a detailed history, assessment for cancer risk, and physical examination.

Health beliefs, illness perceptions and determinants of breast screening uptake in Malta: a cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: Women's beliefs and representations of breast cancer (BC) and breast screening (BS) are salient predictors for BS practices. This study utilized the health belief model (HBM) and common-sense model (CSM) of illness self-regulation to explore factors associated with BS uptake in Malta and subsequently, to identify the most important predictors to first screening uptake. METHODS: This cross-sectional survey enrolled Maltese women (n = 404) ages 50 to 60 at the time of their first screening invitation, invited to the National Breast Screening Programme by stratified random sampling,

Clinical Examination Does Not Predict Response to Albuterol in Ventilated Infants With Bronchiolitis.

OBJECTIVE: Bronchiolitis is a common respiratory infection in infants that is sometimes treated with albuterol. Response to albuterol is determined by clinical assessment, but this subjective determination is potentially unreliable. In this study, we compared providers' clinical assessment of response to albuterol with the measurement of response by pulmonary mechanics in intubated, sedated, and ventilated infants. DESIGN: Before and 20 minutes following racemic albuterol therapy, a nurse, respiratory therapist, and physician performed simultaneous examinations and assessed response to albute

Cutaneous sign of abuse: Kids are not just little people.

Skin injury is the most common form of child physical abuse. Although the pattern and visual appearance of skin injury and the treatment needed for the injury is similar in children and adults, characteristics of infant and childhood skin may complicate the diagnosis of injury. A good understanding of normal developmental presentation of accidental injury from infancy to adulthood, locations for injury that should trigger consideration of abuse, and cutaneous mimics of abuse across the lifespan are critical to the identification of suspected abuse. Adults and older children can provide a histo

[Reliability and validity of the modified Allen test: a systematic review and metanalysis].

The objective was to evaluate the reliability and validity of the modified Allen test in screening for collateral circulation deficits in the palm and for predicting distal hand ischemia. We performed a systematic review of the literature indexed in 6 databases. We developed a search strategy to locate studies comparing the Allen test to Doppler ultrasound to detect circulation deficits in the hand, studies assessing the incidence of ischemic events on arterial puncture after an abnormal Allen test result, and studies of Allen test interobserver agreement. Fourteen articles met the inclusion c
