[Frequent occurrence of contrast medium reactions in urograms following accidents in childhood].

Between 30.8.1973 and 30.11.1982 3.200 intravenous urograms were performed with Urografin 76% in patients aged from 0 to 16 years. With rega … ain barrier as a result of microlesions in secondary brain trauma and the increased response of the autonomic nervous system to contrast media which occurs as a result could be a significant factor. However, it does not fully explain the incidents observed. It would be desirable to carry out checks at other clinics and in adults.

Congenital central alveolar hypoventilation syndrome in six infants.

Six infants with congenital alveolar hypoventilation syndrome (CCHS) were seen and observed over several years. Two had an association of CC … non-rapid eye movement) sleep, which normally develops between 2 and 4 months of age. CCHS involves autonomic nervous system dysfunction, and the question of a defect involving the integration of chemoreceptor information more than a direct defect of the central chemoreceptor is discussed.

Metabolic studies and autonomic function in children with partial lipodystrophy.

Studies of carbohydrate metabolism in 6 children with partial lipodystrophy (none of whom had evidence of renal disease) showed raised fasti … from nondystrophic areas showed an increased proportion of palmitoleic acid. No abnormality of the autonomic nervous system was found. Treatment of 2 patients with propranolol did not improve their lipodystrophy. The metabolic abnormalities present at an early age of the disease show that partial lipodystrophy should not be regarded only as a cosmetic disorder.

Anatomical modeling of visceral afferent innervation in the rodent stomach.

Understanding the sensory nervous system's precise innervation of visceral organs remains a major challenge in systems neuroscience, particularly for designing neuromodulatory therapies. Here, we introduce a digital twin of the rodent stomach that combines high-resolution structural images and nerve-specific mapping onto a common coordinate scaffold. Using a pipeline developed within the NIH SPARC (Stimulate Peripheral Activity to Relieve Conditions) framework, we used immunohistochemistry (fluorescence and chromogenic) and anterograde tracing to label Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) ax

Advances in Bionic Therapies for Targeting Neural Circuit Reconstruction and Integration for Spinal Cord Injury.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is one of the most common critical illnesses, which can cause neurological deficits and disabilities of motor, sensory and autonomic nervous system in mild cases, and lead to paralysis or even death following severe trauma. Although there are currently no effective and satisfactory clinical treatments, the efforts for repair SCI never stop. Besides the traditional strategies such as drugs, surgical interventions and rehabilitative care, the bionic therapies have attracted significant attention due to its considerable promise. The bionic therapies for SCI mainly include…

A Bayesian analysis of heart rate variability changes over acute episodes of bipolar disorder.

Bipolar disorder (BD) involves autonomic nervous system dysfunction, detectable through heart rate variability (HRV). HRV is a promising biomarker, but its dynamics during acute mania or depression episodes are poorly understood. Using a Bayesian approach, we developed a probabilistic model of HRV changes in BD, measured by the natural logarithm of the Root Mean Square of Successive RR interval Differences (lnRMSSD). Patients were assessed three to four times from episode onset to euthymia. Unlike previous studies, which used only two assessments, our model allowed for more accurate tracking o…

[Encephalitis due to antibodies against the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor secondary to ovarian teratoma in a pediatric patient].

The encephalitis due to antibodies against the N-methylD-aspartate receptor is a process immune-mediated in which antibodies are directed against the GluN1 subunit of the glutamate receptor in the central nervous system. It is characterized by an acute or subacute onset of psychiatric symptoms such as confusion, short-term memory loss, behavioral changes, catatonia followed by neurological manifestations such as seizures, movement disturbances, autonomic dysfunctions, coma, and respiratory depression. It is serious and life threatening. Its association with ovarian teratoma as a paraneoplastic

Relationship Between Obstructive Sleep Apnoea and AF.

With the growing obesity epidemic, the global burden of AF and obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is increasing at an alarming rate. Obesity, age, male gender, alcohol consumption, smoking and heart failure are common risk factors for both AF and OSA and they are independently associated with adverse cardiovascular outcomes. Weak evidence from observational studies link OSA to the development of AF. Hypoxia/hypercapnia, systemic inflammation and autonomic nervous system modulation are biological mechanisms that link OSA to AF. Patients with OSA have a poor response to catheter ablation of AF and o…

Tetanus.

Tetanus is a vaccine-preventable disease that still commonly occurs in many low-income and middle-income countries, although it is rare in high-income countries. The disease is caused by the toxin of the bacterium Clostridium tetani and is characterised by muscle spasms and autonomic nervous system dysfunction. Global vaccination initiatives have had considerable success but they continue to face many challenges. Treatment for tetanus aims to control spasms and reduce cardiovascular instability, and consists of wound debridement, antitoxin, antibiotics, and supportive care. Recent research has…

Gastrointestinal Beriberi and Wernicke's Encephalopathy Triggered by One Session of Heavy Drinking.

An otherwise healthy 30-year-old male acquired gastrointestinal beriberi and subsequent Wernicke's encephalopathy after 1 session of heavy drinking. Nausea, vomiting, and anorexia relentlessly progressed. The patient developed external ophthalmoplegia after 2 months. Intravenous 1,000 mg thiamine reversed both neurologic and gastrointestinal symptoms within hours. It is hard to diagnose gastrointestinal beriberi since the symptoms are nonspecific. The patient underwent 11 emergency room visits, 3 hospital admissions, and laparoscopic cystectomy within 2 months, but the gastrointestinal symptom

Molecular and Functional Neuroscience in Immunity.

The nervous system regulates immunity and inflammation. The molecular detection of pathogen fragments, cytokines, and other immune molecules by sensory neurons generates immunoregulatory responses through efferent autonomic neuron signaling. The functional organization of this neural control is based on principles of reflex regulation. Reflexes involving the vagus nerve and other nerves have been therapeutically explored in models of inflammatory and autoimmune conditions, and recently in clinical settings. The brain integrates neuro-immune communication, and brain function is altered in disea

Deep and future insights into neuromodulation therapies for heart failure.

Major pathophysiology of heart failure is an autonomic nervous system dysfunction as a result of excess sympathoexcitation and/or withdrawal of vagal nerve activity. Although we already have various pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies for heart failure, survival of heart failure patients remains around 50%. To achieve further reductions in morbidity and mortality of heart failure, neuromodulations with devices, such as baroreflex activating therapy, vagal nerve stimulation, renal sympathetic denervation, spinal cord stimulation, and left cardiac sympathetic denervation, have been…

Treatment of Posttraumatic Abdominal Autonomic Neuropathy Manifesting as Functional Dyspepsia and Chronic Constipation: An Integrative East-West Approach.

A 52-year-old male with a history of spinal cord injury and cauda equina syndrome resulting in neurogenic bladder presented with chronic constipation and functional dyspepsia that was refractory to medical management. He was treated with an integrative East-West approach including acupuncture, trigger point injections, and Tui Na massage. Both his pain and constipation improved after a series of treatments, and this improvement was largely sustained at 2-year follow-up. This patient's symptoms are consistent with damage to the visceral parasympathetic nervous system. Interestingly, many studie

Laryngeal paraganglioma mimicking a laryngeal haemangioma.

Paraganglioma are uncommon neuroendocrine tumours arising from extra-adrenal chromaffin cells of the autonomic nervous system. In the head and neck region, these neoplasms most commonly arise from the carotid body, the vagus nerve, and the jugulotympanic area. We present the case of a 69-year-old woman who suffered from dyspnoea and dysphonia for six months. A biopsy diagnosed a laryngeal haemangioma and a resection of the tumour was performed using supraglottic pharyngolaryngectomy. Definitive histopathological examination revealed a laryngeal paraganglioma. Laryngeal paraganglioma and haeman…

Malignant cell infiltration in the peripheral nervous system.

The peripheral nervous system can be affected by malignancies involving different mechanisms. Neoplastic nerve lesion by compression, invasion, and infiltration is rare and occurs in particular in leukemia (neuroleukemiosis) and lymphoma (neurolymphomatosis). Its occurrence is much rarer in cancer, and even less so in sarcoma. The neoplastic infiltration of peripheral nerves by solid tumors is characterized by specific topographical sites such as the base of the skull, the ear, nose and throat region, and the cervico-brachial plexus as well as the lumbar and sacral plexus. Rarely malignant inv

Congenital insensitivity to pain and anhidrosis.

Congenital insensitivity to pain and anhidrosis (CIPA) is a rare reported entity characterised by disturbance in the pain and temperature perception due to involvement of the autonomic and sensory nervous system. It is an autosomal recessive trait with several defects of the gene NTRK1 coding for the neurotrophic tyrosine kinase - a nerve growth factor receptor on chromosome 1q21-q22. Traumatic fractures are common and, because of lack of pain, may go unrecognised for prolonged periods, resulting in nonunion or pseudoarthrosis. A Charcot joint may be the end result. Treatment complications are
