As a part of multipurpose health survey of the population in Vietnam the antibodies against S. typhi were determined by the micromethod using haemagglutination test (O-antigen 9, 12) and agglutination test using standard H-diagnostic antigen (d). Totally 292 sera were examined, 139 from Duyen Thai village and 154 from Mai Chau. The data on vaccination against typhoid fever are recorded only in 102 persons. The simultaneous occurrence of typhoid fever in a child with an idiopathic growth hormone insufficiency treated with Somatrem, produced a lack of response to the recombinant hormone, evidenced by a lack of growth during the acute disease. It is concluded that the administration of Somatrem should be suspended during the simultaneous occurrence of any severe illness.

Fifty blood culture positive patients of typhoid fever were studied during the current outbreak of the disease for their clinical profile. In 39 (78%) cases the isolates of S. typhi were resistant to conventional drugs. Children below 2 years of age constituted 20% of the total cases and belonged exclusively to the group with multidrug resistant typhoid fever (MRTF). A 25-year-old homosexual man with a childhood history of rheumatic heart disease presented with painful joints, fever and chest pain. He was diagnosed as having acute rheumatic fever and was found to be HIV antibody-positive. His illness responded to conventional treatment but he had a persistently low CD4 lymphocyte count and was started on zidovudine. Interpretation of the significance of a low CD4 lymphocyte count is problematic in a patient with coincident rheumatic fever and HIV infection as both conditions can cause CD4 lymphopenia.

Many studies of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) have been done but only a few revealed the respiratory status. Respiratory problems arise because of plasma leakage through the damaged capillaries, causing lung edema and in turn result in hypoxemia. We report 11 patients diagnosed of Acute Rheumatic Fever (ARF), and 7 of Poststreptococcal Reactive Arthritis (PSRA): patients with group A beta hemolytic streptococcal infection and articular disease who do not fulfill the modified Jones criteria. Comparative chemotherapeutic efficacy of doxycycline administered orally or parenterally was studied on a model of experimental Q fever in guinea pigs and albino mice. The advantage of the parenteral use of the antibiotic was observed only in the treatment of the albino mice. Optimization of the doses and time of doxycycline use providing the maximum therapeutic effect and the required levels of the complement binding antibodies was achieved with employing the multifactorial analysis.

The authors report a case of mediterranean boutonneuse fever disclosed in a 6 year-old child presenting with severe neurological disorder, coma, hypotonia, sphincteral disorders, rash and eschar at the site of bite. Rise of antibodies detected by indirect immunofluorescence test (1/80----1/320) confirmed the diagnosis. Visualization of ischemic internal capsules at cerebral CT scan brought evidence of vascular lesions in rickettsial disease.

Eighty-seven infants and children aged 1 month to 15 years admitted to the Pediatric Department, Randers Central Hospital 1975-1988 with bacterial meningitis were evaluated with special interest in the course of fever and its relation to sequelae.
