Trigeminal neuralgia caused by venous angioma: case report.

A 34-year-old female presented with trigeminal neuralgia caused by a venous malformation in the right cerebello-pontine region. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated the abnormal draining veins from the venous malformation. The dilated vessels extended around the trigeminal nerve and compressed the root entry zone. Microvascular decompression (MVD) was performed, and her trigeminal neuralgia was completely relieved without neurological deficits. The offending vessel in most cases of trigeminal neuralgia is an arterial branch. Veins may also be associated with trigemin

Conversion of arterial input functions for dual pharmacokinetic modeling using Gd-DTPA/MRI and 18F-FDG/PET.

Reaching the full potential of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-positron emission tomography (PET) dual modality systems requires new methodologies in quantitative image analyses. In this study, methods are proposed to convert an arterial input function (AIF) derived from gadolinium-diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (Gd-DTPA) in MRI, into a (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose ((18)F-FDG) AIF in PET, and vice versa. The AIFs from both modalities were obtained from manual blood sampling in a F98-Fisher glioblastoma rat model. They were well fitted by a convolution of a rectangular function with a biexpone

Wall shear stress calculation in ascending aorta using phase contrast magnetic resonance imaging. Investigating effective ways to calculate it in clinical practice.

INTRODUCTION: There is growing evidence that atherosclerosis, as well as endothelial biology, depend on arterial wall shear stress (WSS). Several methods of WSS calculation with varying degrees of complexity have been proposed. This study aimed at investigating whether the most straightforward and easier to apply of these methods give comparable results in clinical practice. METHODS: Complete velocity encoding measurements using phase contrast magnetic resonance imaging were performed in 20 patients at a level perpendicular to the long axis of the ascending aorta approximately 2cm above the a

Suppressing bladder artifacts in bone SPECT of the pelvis.

OBJECTIVE: Bladder-filling reconstruction artifacts have a detrimental effect on the image quality of pelvic bone single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). Using a simple protocol consisting of forced diuresis coupled with intravenous (IV) hydration, this study was undertaken to obtain an artifact-free pelvic SPECT after discarding the residual urinary activity. METHODS: Thirty patients were enrolled. In group I, pelvic SPECT was performed directly after normal void, whereas in group II, SPECT was preceded by IV injection of 0.5 mg/kg furosemide (maximum 40 mg) coupled with IV infus

A cross validation study of deep brain stimulation targeting: from experts to atlas-based, segmentation-based and automatic registration algorithms.

Validation of image registration algorithms is a difficult task and open-ended problem, usually application-dependent. In this paper, we focus on deep brain stimulation (DBS) targeting for the treatment of movement disorders like Parkinson's disease and essential tremor. DBS involves implantation of an electrode deep inside the brain to electrically stimulate specific areas shutting down the disease's symptoms. The subthalamic nucleus (STN) has turned out to be the optimal target for this kind of surgery. Unfortunately, the STN is in general not clearly distinguishable in common medical imagin

Region-Specific Evaluation of Plaque Segmentation in Cross-sectional Projections of Carotid Ultrasound Images Using Deep Learning Models in a Sub-clinical Atherosclerosis Cohort.

OBJECTIVE: Detection of atherosclerotic plaque in the carotid arteries is essential for early cardiovascular risk assessment. While B-mode ultrasound is the standard imaging modality, most deep learning studies focus on longitudinal views of the common carotid artery, with limited investigation of cross-sectional imaging and other clinically relevant regions such as the carotid bulb and split. To the best of our knowledge, this study presents the first region-specific evaluation of plaque segmentation using deep learning models in cross-sectional carotid ultrasound images. METHODS: Cross-sect

Decoupling Alzheimer Disease Pathologic Abnormalities at PET with Improved Clinical Relevance by Interpretable Adversarial Decomposition Learning.

Background Template-based PET metrics quantify Alzheimer disease (AD) amyloid-β (Aβ) and tau burden but compress whole-brain data into a single scalar, overlooking disease heterogeneity and sometimes causing imaging-clinical discordance. Artificial intelligence (AI) approaches capture richer patterns but often lack biologic interpretability. Purpose To develop and validate an interpretable deep-learning framework that separates AD-specific abnormalities from physiologic uptake using pathophysiologic constraints, generating a clinically meaningful AI biomarker. Materials and Methods In this ret

Vendor and software based variation in left atrial strain measurements: implications for clinical practice.

Left atrial strain (LAS) is a valuable echocardiographic marker of left atrial function with growing clinical utility. However, variability in LAS measurements across software vendors remains a barrier to its routine clinical use. This study aimed to compare LAS measurements obtained using a dedicated left atrial-specific measurement tool (AFI-LA (General Electric (GE)) with those derived from established LV-based strain platforms: GE EchoPAC (mid-myocardial and endocardial tracking) and TomTec-Arena (feature tracking), used for measurement of LAS. LAS was measured in 112 subjects (72 individu

BACKGROUND: The Doppler sonography technique known as "superb microvascular imaging" (SMI) is advancing sonographic micro vascularization imaging in various disciplines. In this study, we aimed to determine whether SMI could reliably reproduce the blood flow in thyroid nodes and whether malignancy could be diagnosed, based on vascularization properties. Immunhistochemical staining by CD34 and SMI where used to determine the vascularization of nodes in terms of quantified vascularization parameters gained by computational evaluation. METHODS: We used image analysis programs to investigate whet
