A physiological role of substance P (SP) in inflammatory reaction was examined in the rat incisor pulp and inferior lip. SP content in pulps and lips significantly increased after antidromic stimulation of the inferior alveolar nerve. Following the same stimulation, vascular permeability also increased significantly in pulps and lips, and this permeability response was significantly inhibited by an SP-antagonist. Morphine reduced the permeability response to antidromic stimulation in pulps but had no effect in lips. N-methyl levallorphan (a peripherally selective narcotic antagonist) prevented

This narrative review examines immediate facial reanimation after radical parotidectomy for malignancy within an integrated oncologic and reconstructive framework; no formal systematic evidence synthesis or meta-analysis was performed. Radical parotidectomy with facial nerve sacrifice remains necessary for a subset of primary parotid malignancies and parotid-region metastatic tumors when safe tumor clearance cannot otherwise be achieved. Facial paralysis in this setting compromises ocular protection, oral competence, speech, social interaction, and long-term quality of life and often coexists

OBJECTIVE: Post-thyroidectomy dysphonia may occur even when recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) and external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve (EBSLN) integrity are preserved. Hemostatic materials (HMs) are widely used to enhance intraoperative hemostasis and reduce postoperative drainage; however, their use may introduce a functional trade-off between bleeding control and postoperative voice and swallowing outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate how different HMs balance hemostatic efficacy and functional preservation in nerve-preserved total thyroidectomy.
METHODS: This retrospective study

The management of impacted mandibular third molars can be a difficult clinical issue due to the proximity of the tooth to critical neurovascular structures. Surgical removal is routinely performed, but the technique carries a known risk of injury to the inferior alveolar and lingual nerves. The complication may induce temporary or permanent sensory impairment. Orthodontic traction can be an alternative to reposition the tooth in a more desirable location before surgical removal. The selection of the appropriate treatment is important to avoid a mechanical injury and to allow the adjacent bone

BACKGROUND: Facial nerves have the potential for regeneration following injury, but this process is often challenging and slow. Schwann cells (SCs) are pivotal in this process. Bone mesenchymal stem cells (BMSC)-derived exosomes promote tissue repair through paracrine action, with hypoxic preconditioning enhancing their effects. The main purpose of this study was to determine whether hypoxia-preconditioned BMSC-derived exosomes (Hypo-Exos) exhibit a greater therapeutic effect on facial nerve repair/regeneration and reveal the mechanism.
METHODS: CCK-8, EdU, Transwell, and ELISA assays were us

BACKGROUND: Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) are malignancies that arise or differentiate from or infiltrate peripheral nerves and account for approximately 5% of soft-tissue malignancies. Approximately half of MPNSTs develop in patients with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), a hereditary disease. MPNSTs occur mainly in the trunk, proximal extremities, and neck, but can on rare occasion arise in or near the gastrointestinal tract, and intestinal complications have been reported. We describe herein a case with resection of an MPNST arising in the pelvic region.

OBJECTIVE: Hirschsprung's disease (HSCR) is a congenital intestinal neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by the absence of enteric ganglion cells in the distal colon. Although Hirschsprung-associated enterocolitis (HAEC) is the most frequent life-threatening complication in HSCR, to date reliable biomarkers predicting the likelihood of HAEC are yet to be established. We established a three-center retrospective study including 104 HSCR patients surgically treated between 1998 and 2019.

BACKGROUND Imbalanced cardiac autonomic control and cardiac receptors redistribution contribute to the arrhythmogenic substrate under the myocardial infarction (MI) condition. Stimulating the auricular branch of vagus nerve (AB-VNS) has been proven to reduce post-infarction ventricular arrhythmia (VAs), but its potential mechanisms were largely unknown. This study aimed to investigate whether long-term intermittent low-intensity AB-VNS could produce a protective effect on modulating autonomic activities and abnormal redistribution of autonomic nerve efferent receptors in a MI canine model. Acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (AIDP) is an aggressive antibody- and T-cell-mediated variant of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), a prominent and debilitating autoimmune disorder of the peripheral nervous system. Despite advancements in clinical management, treatment of patients with AIDP/GBS and its chronic variant CIDP remains palliative and relies on the use of non-specific immunemodulating therapies. Our laboratory has previously reported that therapeutic administration of statins safely attenuates the clinical severity of experimental autoimmune neuritis (EAN), a well-charac

OBJECT: The gold standard for reconstructing large nerve defects, the nerve autograft, results in donor-site morbidity. This detrimental consequence drives the search for alternatives. We used a vein filled with a small piece of fresh muscle to prevent the vein from collapsing and with bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) to enhance regeneration.
METHODS: In 60 rats, a 15-mm sciatic nerve defect was bridged with a nerve autograft, a vein filled with muscle or a vein filled with muscle and BMSCs. Toe spread and pinprick were used to evaluate motor and sensory function. Compound muscle action pote

BACKGROUND: Retinal ganglion cell (RGC) death is the final consequence of many blinding diseases, where there is considerable variation in the time course and severity of RGC loss. Indeed, this process appears to be influenced by a wide variety of genetic and environmental factors. In this study we explored the genetic basis for differences in ganglion cell death in two inbred strains of mice.
RESULTS: We found that RGCs are more susceptible to death following optic nerve crush in C57BL/6J mice (54% survival) than in DBA/2J mice (62% survival). Using the Illumina Mouse-6 microarray, we identi

Previous studies have found changes in neuropeptide expression in trigeminal ganglion cells after inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) section. These changes may play a part in the persistent sensory abnormalities that can be experienced after trigeminal nerve injuries. Here, neuropeptide expression after IAN ligation was studied, as this type of injury is thought to be more likely to result in sensory disturbances. The neuropeptides investigated were substance P, calcitonin gene-related peptide, enkephalin (ENK), galanin (GAL), neuropeptide Y (NPY) and vasoactive intestinal polypeptide. In anaesthet

Nerve injury leads to central neuroimmunologic responses that may be integral to the development and maintenance of chronic neuropathic pain in humans. Recent data have demonstrated that cytokines and growth factors may be strongly implicated in the generation of pain states at both peripheral and central nervous system sites. We utilized immunohistochemical methods to investigate this phenomenon in rat models of neuropathic pain. Specifically, we employed well-characterized models of neuropathy that result in behaviors suggestive of neuropathic pain in humans; a freeze lesion of the sciatic n
