The Effect of Abuse History on Adolescent Patients with Feeding and Eating Disorders Treated through Psychodynamic Therapy: Comorbidities and Outcome.

OBJECTIVES: The first aim of our study was to compare the characteristics and comorbidities of patients with eating disorders between those who suffered from a childhood abuse and those who did not. Our second aim was to analyze the differences in the outcome of the psychodynamic therapy between abused and not abused patients. METHODS: Twenty-six adolescent patients with eating disorders were assessed. Adolescent were evaluated by a single expert psychiatrist by checklists and questionnaires: EDI 3, SCL 90, BIS11, Dissociative Experiences Scale, Global Assessment of Functioning, SCID II, and

Psychological profile of dysfunctional dysphonia.

A high degree of emotional maladjustment can be detected in dysfunctional dysphonia. In these patients, it is not rare to observe an immediate resolution of the phoniatric disorder, but it is equally as common to identify a significant rate of recurrence (> 10%) in the short and long term. This phenomenon may be due to poor adaptive ability in the presence of mood disorders. Aims of this study were: a. selection of a suitable instrument to identify "minor" and "major" symptoms of psychiatric nature in dysphonic subjects; b. evaluation of profile of mood disorders in dysfunctional dysphonic adu

Association between Cannabis Use Disorder and Mental Health Disorders in the Adolescent Population: A Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: According to the literature, early initiation to cannabis use and a dependent pattern of use are important risk factors for the development of mental health disorders. However, there are few cohort studies which look at the development of mental health disorders associated with cannabis use among young people with cannabis use disorder (CUD). The aim of the study was to determine the cumulative incidence of mental health disorders and the risk of developing mental health disorders among minors who commenced treatment for CUD in Catalonia during 2015-2019. METHODS: This was a ret

Mathematical (Dis)abilities Within the Opportunity-Propensity Model: The Choice of Math Test Matters.

This study examined individual differences in mathematics learning by combining antecedent (A), opportunity (O), and propensity (P) indicators within the Opportunity-Propensity Model. Although there is already some evidence for this model based on secondary datasets, there currently is no primary data available that simultaneously takes into account A, O, and P factors in children with and without Mathematical Learning Disabilities (MLD). Therefore, the mathematical abilities of 114 school-aged children (grade 3 till 6) with and without MLD were analyzed and combined with information retrieved

The differential diagnosis of anxiety. Psychiatric and medical disorders.

This article has reviewed clinical and demographic features of the primary anxiety disorders and other psychiatric and medical disorders that often are associated with anxiety symptoms, highlighting differential diagnosis. In summary, phobic disorders (exogenous anxiety) are characterized by anxiety reliably elicited by specific environmental stimuli; the stimuli involved determine which type of phobia is diagnosed. In contrast, panic attacks and generalized anxiety (endogenous anxiety) involve symptoms of anxiety not associated only with specific eliciting stimuli. Panic disorder is different

A comparison of medically serious suicide attempters admitted to intensive care units versus other medically serious suicide attempters.

BACKGROUND: Medically serious suicide attempts (MSSA) represent a subgroup of clinically heterogeneous suicidal behaviours very close to deaths by suicide. A simple definition of an MSSA is a suicide attempt with life-threatening consequences, regardless of the severity of the attempter's mental disorder. Few studies have specifically analysed the heterogeneity of MSSA. Therefore, the aim of this study is to describe the profile of individuals who made a highly severe MSSA and to compare those admitted to Intensive Care Units (ICU) - including Burn Units- with other MSSA admitted to other medi

Study of Risk Factors Associated with Suicide Attempt in Patients with Bipolar Disorder Type I.

Background  Suicide is the leading contributor to mortality in bipolar disorder (BD). A history of suicidal attempt is a robust predictive marker for future suicide attempts. Personality profiles and coping strategies are the areas of contemporary research in bipolar suicides apart from clinical and demographic risk factors. However, similar research in developing countries is rarer. Objectives  The present study aimed to identify the risk factors associated with suicidal attempts in BD type I (BD-I). Materials and Methods  Patients with BD-I currently in clinical remission ( N = 102) were rec

Psychiatric disorders and clinical correlates of suicidal patients admitted to a psychiatric hospital in Tokyo.

BACKGROUND: Patients admitted to a psychiatric hospital with suicidal behavior (SB) are considered to be especially at high risk of suicide. However, the number of studies that have addressed this patient population remains insufficient compared to that of studies on suicidal patients in emergency or medical settings. The purpose of this study is to seek features of a sample of newly admitted suicidal psychiatric patients in a metropolitan area of Japan. METHOD: 155 suicidal patients consecutively admitted to a large psychiatric center during a 20-month period, admission styles of whom were m

Substance Use Affects Type 1 Diabetes Pancreas Pathology: Implications for Future Studies.

Access to human pancreas samples from organ donors has greatly advanced our understanding of type 1 diabetes pathogenesis; however, previous studies have shown that donors have a high rate of substance use, and its impact on pancreatic histopathology in this disease is not well described. One-hundred-thirty-one type 1 diabetes and 111 control organ donor pancreata from persons 12-89 years of age (mean 29.8 ± 15.5 years) within the Network for Pancreatic Organ donors with Diabetes (nPOD) were examined for insulin positivity, insulitis, amyloid staining, acute and chronic pancreatitis, and chron

Deep Dyspareunia in Endometriosis: A Proposed Framework Based on Pain Mechanisms and Genito-Pelvic Pain Penetration Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Endometriosis is a common chronic disease affecting 1 in 10 women of reproductive age, with half of women with endometriosis experiencing deep dyspareunia. A review of research studies on endometriosis indicates a need for a validated question or questionnaire for deep dyspareunia. Moreover, placebo-controlled randomized trials have yet to demonstrate a clear benefit for traditional treatments of endometriosis for the outcome of deep dyspareunia. The reason some patients might not respond to traditional treatments is the multifactorial nature of deep dyspareunia in endometriosis,

[Foreign body ingestions in mental disorders: What do we know and what should we do?].

Foreign body ingestion (FBI) in mental disorders is a common and often highly challenging healthcare problem. While international guidelines exist for the acute gastroenterological care of adults with FBI, the data available in the psychiatric context is very limited in terms of both quantity and quality. FBI occurs in almost all mental disorders, but is probably most common in patients with borderline personality disorder. Sharp and pointed objects, particularly large (>2.5 cm in diameter) or long (>6 cm) objects, as well as batteries, especially button cells, but also magnets, are associated

Attention training technique delivered in groups as treatment for anxiety and depression in patients with coronary heart disease: study protocol for a waiting-list randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Clinically significant symptoms of depression and anxiety in coronary heart disease (CHD) patients are common and associated with adverse outcomes. Psychological treatments have shown limited effectiveness and more effective treatments have been requested. Attention training technique (ATT), a component of metacognitive therapy, can potentially be effective as a stand-alone treatment for anxiety and depression. In an open study, ATT delivered face-to-face in a group format was feasible and potentially effective for improving depression and anxiety symptoms in CHD patients. The ne

Sexual inhibition and sexual excitation in a sample of Polish women.

The contemporary concept of sexual counseling for women with sexual problems, distress, and female sexual dysfunction (FSD) includes tailored medical and/or psychological intervention. The dual control model and the Sexual Excitation/Sexual Inhibition Inventory for Women (SESII-W) are helpful for identifying risk factors and tailoring therapy for FSD. The current study aimed to (1) validate the Polish translation of the SESII-W in a sample of Polish women, and (2) verify the usefulness of the SESII-W in clinical practice. Five hundred nine white women age 18 to 55 years old (M ± SD age = 39.7

Evaluation of central serotonergic function in affective and related disorders by the fenfluramine challenge test: a critical review.

Plasma prolactin levels following oral administration of the serotonin (5-HT) releasing agent, fenfluramine hydrochloride, have been extensively used to evaluate central serotonergic function in affective and related disorders. Cortisol responses to fenfluramine have generally been a less informative measure. In healthy subjects, prolactin release by fenfluramine is dose-dependent, blocked by antagonists of serotonin receptors of the 5-HT-2a/2c type, negatively correlated with age and increased in young females. In major depression, a preponderance of studies have found blunted prolactin respo

HNF1A:From Monogenic Diabetes to Type 2 Diabetes and Gestational Diabetes Mellitus.

Diabetes, a disease characterized by hyperglycemia, has a serious impact on the lives and families of patients as well as on society. Diabetes is a group of highly heterogeneous metabolic diseases that can be classified as type 1 diabetes (T1D), type 2 diabetes (T2D), gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), or other according to the etiology. The clinical manifestations are more or less similar among the different types of diabetes, and each type is highly heterogeneous due to different pathogenic factors. Therefore, distinguishing between various types of diabetes and defining their subtypes are

Exposome-induced dysregulation of glycemic homeostasis: Emerging biomarkers for diabetes risk and progression.

Environmental exposures throughout life profoundly influence the development and progression of diabetes mellitus. The exposome, representing the totality of environmental exposures from conception to adulthood, interacts with genetic and metabolic pathways, leaving measurable signatures termed biomarkers. These biomarkers encompass indicators of exposure, biological effect, and susceptibility, providing mechanistic insights into glycemic regulation and disease progression. This review synthesizes current evidence on exposome-linked biomarkers in both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, highlighting c

Antibiotic therapy as a risk factor for chronic residual and phantom limb pain after combat-related amputation: a 212-patient cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Antibiotic (AB) therapy is standard in managing combat-related infections, particularly after traumatic limb amputations. However, prolonged or combined antibiotic regimens may contribute to neuroinflammatory processes that predispose patients to chronic post-amputation pain (ChPAP), which combines the consepts of chronic residual limb pain (RLP) and phantom limb pain (PLP). OBJECTIVE: To investigate associations between antibiotic use (duration, type, and combination) and the development of RLP and PLP in post-amputation military patients. METHODS: This retrospective cohort stud

Immediate and delayed hypersensitivity to biologicals in children-A practical approach: An EAACI task force report.

In the era of precision medicine, biologicals demonstrate how therapies can be personalized and directed against new targets. This type of therapy includes different molecules such as growth factors, immune modulators, vaccines, and monoclonal antibodies (mAbs). In recent years, biologicals have been increasingly developed and authorized, although their use in children is limited compared to that in adults, due to the complexity of the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of the involved proteins, as well as other factors, such as regulations governing clinical trials. Regardless, biologicals

Allergenic and cytotoxic potential of (meth)acrylate monomers in dental materials: a narrative review.

This narrative review synthesizes current evidence on the allergenic and cytotoxic potential of (meth)acrylate monomers. Residual monomers act as haptens, triggering type IV (delayed-type) hypersensitivity reactions in both patients and dental professionals. Exposure occurs through dermal contact, oral mucosa, ocular tissues, and inhalation of nanoparticles generated during grinding and polishing. Standard dental gloves provide limited chemical protection. Cross-sensitization among structurally related monomers is common, and previous sensitization through non-dental sources such as nail produ
