OBJECTIVE: This study sought to investigate the role of human papillomavirus (HPV) in the carcinogenesis of oral leukoplakia (OLK), with the oral cavity as the site of interest.
STUDY DESIGN: A total of 76 patients (152 specimens) were enrolled in the study. The patients were divided into 2 groups: the malignant transformation of OLK (OLK-MT) group and the non-malignant transformation of OLK (OLK-non-MT) group. HPV reverse dot blot analysis, HPV DNA polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and p16INK4A immunohistochemistry (IHC) were used to determine HPV infection status.

Malignant melanoma (MM) and non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) are increasingly common and both can be fatal. In 2009 the World Health Organization (WHO) classified the whole ultraviolet spectrum and tanning beds as carcinogenic to humans, placing them in the same category as asbestos and tobacco. The coexistence of primary lung cancer and lymphoma is a rare finding. We present a case of a 66-year-old woman with marginal B-cell lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue type with lung, mediastinal lymph node, and bone marrow involvement. Surveillance imaging after treatment for lymphoma revealed persistent uptake by positron emission tomography scan. A transbronchial biopsy revealed the marginal B-cell lymphoma and a well-differentiated invasive squamous cell carcinoma. Management was changed to address new pathologic findings.

Between 1970 and 1988, 149 patients with carcinoma of the cardia were operated on at the Lahey Clinic. Of these patients, 127 (85%) underwent resection; 23 (18.1%) were of a palliative nature. More than 75% had Stage III and IV disease. One patient (0.8%) died within 30 days of the operation of a myocardial infarct. Two other patients failed to leave the hospital.
