In the study of the lens of a congenital cataractous mouse mutant (CAT), it has been shown that a loss of growth regulation at the cellular level causes gross lens abnormalities. This communication reports the findings of a retrospective study of extracranial aneurysms found at necropsy in a large colony of squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus). Eleven (1.5%) of 730 cases had dissecting, saccular, or fusiform aneurysms of the carotid arteries or aorta. The itch mite Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis has been a menace to humanity for ages. Diagnosing scabies can be a challenge in view of the varied presentations of the disease. The male genitalia are an important area of predilection of the mite. Examination of this often overlooked area is essential as it may reveal both characteristic and atypical manifestations of scabies. Genital involvement also attains special relevance in view of the possible sexual transmission of the mite. In addition to the morbidity caused by itching, patients may have to deal with myths, stigma, and embarrassment.

Human embryonic stem cell (hESC) line chHES-468 was derived from abnormal blastocyst donated by polycystic kidney syndrome (PKD) patient after preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) treatment. DNA sequencing analysis confirmed that chHES-468 cell line carried a heterozygous mutation, c.10526_10527delAG, of PKD1. Characteristic tests proved that the chHES-468 cell line presented typical markers of pluripotency and had the capability to form the three germ layers both in vitro and in vivo.

A case of disto-lateral onychomycosis of the third toe of the right foot of a 45-year-old man is reported. The agent of infection was Ulocladium botrytis, a mycete not hitherto reported to infect humans. The patient underwent mycological examination consisting of direct microscope observation and culture of pathological material. Diagnosis was based on the macro- and microscopic characteristics of the colonies. Fragments of the latter were also examined by scanning electron microscope. Clinical and mycological recovery was achieved after 3 months of topical therapy with ciclopiroxolamine.

Ataxia-telangiectasia is caused by mutations in the ATM gene, the protein product of which is essential for effective response to double-stranded DNA breaks. Loss of ATM function explains most aspects of the disease, but not the cerebellar neurodegeneration characteristic of the disease. Mice lacking ATM provide an excellent model of the human disorder. Histochemical analysis of frozen, thin sections revealed the distribution of alkaline phosphatase (ALPase) in 47 primary intracranial neoplasms in humans. The cytoplasm of meningioma cells exhibited the strongest ALPase reactivity. Physical maps have been constructed around loci DNF15S2, D3S2, and c-raf1 on the short arm of human chromosome 3 using pulsed field gradient gel electrophoresis. The normal restriction pattern has not been altered by a t(3;8)(p14.2;q24.1) characteristic for a hereditary form of renal cell carcinoma, indicating that the breakpoint itself is not included in any of the mapped areas. We have found a CpG island within the DNF15S2 locus, suggesting the presence of a functional gene in the region.

The accumulation of Vi-antigen in the human body was studied with the use of such characteristic as the specific adsorption capacity of red blood cells. This parameter was shown to depend on the phenotype in the ABO blood group system. In cases of typhoid fever an increase in the adsorption capacity of red blood cells was observed at the acute period of the disease. These changes were particularly manifest in patients belonging to groups O and A. The authors suggest that the adsorption of the antigen on red blood cells has a definite kinetics related to the dynamics of the infectious process.
