[Clinical and experimental results in the treatment of massive periretinal proliferation (MPP), a retinal detachment with a most unfavorable prognosis].

Today eyes with massive periretinal proliferation which are often seen after uncured retinal detachments or after perforating injuries can be cured at least in 25 to 35% of the cases, even with modern surgical techniques. This is due to proliferation of cells, which enter through different pathways--retinal tears, perforating wounds of sclera and chorioidea, damaged retina or retinal vessels--into the vitreous and form membranes, which prevent the retina to attach. In the vitreous gel these cells of different origin can transform into fibroblast-like or myofibroblast-like cells. They also beha…

Ultrasonic fragmentation for vitrectomy and associated surgical procedures.

Ultrasonic fragmentation (USF) can be used to fragment various tissues such as the lens, the vitreous, the iris, and the ciliary body, so th … reous hemorrhage was cleared in 86%, and vision improved in 58%. In massive vitreous hemorrhage and retinal detachment, the vitreous was cleared and the retina reattached in 80% of cases. In massive vitreous contraction, the vitreous was removed in all cases and the retina reattached in all (100%) of cases. In massive vitreous membranes and retinal detac …

Multiple Coronary Artery Aneurysms in Alport Syndrome.

Alport syndrome (AS) is a genetic disorder characterized by abnormal alpha chains of type IV collagen in multiple organs including the kidney, cochlea, cornea, lens, and retina. Aortic disease including dissection and aneurysm has been described with AS. We report the first case of multiple coronary aneurysms as a manifestation of AS.

[Diabetic retrohialoidian hemorrage--invasive minimal treatment].

Subhyaloid hemorrhage is defined as a localized detachment of vitreous from the retina caused by the accumulation of blood, which can lead to sudden and severe loss of vision when it takes place in the macular area. The treatment ranges from conservative to posterior vitrectomy depending on the cause, age and the status of other eye.

[Examination of vitreomacular traction syndrome].

Vitreomacular traction syndrome is a complication of partial posterior vitreous detachment: vitreous is separated from the retina throughout the peripheral fundus but remains adherent posteriorly with anteroposterior traction on the macular area and the optic nerve. The functional and anatomical examinations of this condition are based on the following triad: clinical examination, angiography, and OCT.

The terminal nerve: a new chemosensory system in vertebrates?

Ganglion cells of the terminal nerve in goldfish are located in the olfactory nerve and bulb and send peripheral processes into the olfactory epithelium and central processes to the supracommissural nuclei of the telencephalon as well as to the retina. Correlations between terminal nerve projections and neurobehavioral studies suggest that the terminal nerve mediates responses to sex pheromones.

Pathological findings from two cases of choroideremia.

Light and electron microscopic study of material from two cases of old, quiescent choroideremia led to three conclusions: there was nearly total loss of the outer segments of the visual receptors, there was reduplication of the basement membrane of the pigment epithelium and thickening of Bruch's membrane, and there was gliosis of the inner part of the retina and a preretinal membrane.

Vision: Visual space is not what it appears to be.

The location of visual objects in the world around us is reconstructed in a complex way from the image falling on the retina. Recent studies have begun to reveal the different ways in which the brain dynamically re-maps retinal information across eye movements to compute object locations for perception and directing actions.

[The surgical causes for the development of retinal detachment in experimental vitrectomy].

The operative causes of development of detachment of the retina after vitrectomy were experimentally studied. The principal causes were scleral incision outside the flat segment of the ciliary body, ciliary body injury, traction exposures, intraocular pressure differences. Specific features of the morphologic picture were detected related to exposure to a certain aggravating factor.

Short stature, mental retardation, eye anomalies, and cleft lip/palate.

The syndrome: We describe 3 Brazilian brothers presenting a cluster of signs strongly suggesting a "new" MCA/MR syndrome. The main clinical signs include short stature, microbrachycephaly, mental retardation, palpebral ptosis, coloboma of iris and retina, nystagmus, strabismus, and cleft lip/palate. This is either an autosomal or X-linked recessive trait.

Frozen section analysis of the lacerated globe.

Prolapsed tissues from seven traumatized globes were examined by frozen section prior to primary enucleation or surgical repair. The findings suggest that if retina is identified on such sections, primary enucleation may be justified. If iris, ciliary body, or choroid is found, the decision regarding management must be based on other factors.

Toxicologic effects on the eyes at work.

This review presents some examples of toxic effects on the eyes at work. The type of toxic action ranges from direct splash injuries to late effects of chronic toxic exposure of systemically absorbed substances. The site of toxic action can be on the cornea and conjunctiva, on the retina, on the optic nerve and the visual pathways and even at the visual cortex.

Unilateral optic nerve aplasia associated with rudimental retinal vasculature.

Optic nerve aplasia (ONA) is a rare congenital malformation characterized by absence of optic disk, optic nerve, retinal ganglion cells, and central retina vessels. It is frequently associated with other ocular and central nervous system anomalies. In this paper, we describe a case of ONA associated with microphthalmos and a rudimental retinal vasculature in an otherwise healthy infant.

[A neuronal network model, discerning faint image contours in the presence of primary receptor parameter scatter].

The neuron network model reproducing a number of phenomena concerned with peculiarities of monocular vision of moving and stationary relative to the retina objects was investigated. An analysis has shown that fulfillment of additional requirement of remaining model efficiency under condition of primary receptors parameters scatter may be realised in aforesaid model by insignificant modification of network structure.
