Climate-driven infectious disease risks: a global scoping review of epidemiological patterns, methodological gaps, and policy imperatives.

BACKGROUND: Climate change is reshaping infectious disease dynamics worldwide, yet existing evidence remains fragmented, geographically imbalanced, and weakly connected to policy. OBJECTIVE: To map global peer-reviewed literature (2010-2025) on climate-related infectious diseases, identify epidemiological patterns, methodological gaps, and policy relevance. METHODS: Following PRISMA-ScR and Joanna Briggs guidance, PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus were searched for English-language studies (January 2010-January 2025). Of 2,239 screened records, 2,139 met inclusion criteria. Ten predefined v

Factors influencing scrotal temperature in the bull during simulated heat treatments and thermoneutral conditions as determined by multimodel inferencing.

The creation of any model is complex requiring vast amounts of data, typically gathered over a series of experiments. Specifically the temperature humidity index (THI) and heat load index (HLI) are used as management tools to implement mitigation strategies during hot climatic conditions. Exposure of the testes to hot climatic conditions has a negative impact on spermatogenesis in the bull, and other species. Despite the bull having effective scrotal thermoregulatory ability, these mechanisms can breakdown when the bull is under heat stressed causing scrotal temperature to increase. The abilit

Japanese Encephalitis and Associated Environmental Risk Factors in Eastern Uttar Pradesh: A time series analysis from 2001 to 2016.

India and other Southeast Asian countries are severely affected by Japanese encephalitis (JE), one of the deadliest vector-borne disease threat to human health. Several epidemiological observations suggest climate variables play a role in providing a favorable environment for mosquito development and virus transmission. In this study, generalized additive models were used to determine the association of JE admissions and mortality with climate variables in Gorakhpur district, India, from 2001-2016. The model predicted that every 1 unit increase in mean (Tmean;°C), and minimum (Tmin;°C) tempera

Age-specific climate sensitivity of respiratory hospitalizations in a tropical coastal city: 20-year Random Forest forecasts.

Respiratory diseases remain a major public health challenge in tropical coastal cities, where persistent heat-humidity interactions and climate variability shape population vulnerability. This study quantified associations between atmospheric conditions and respiratory hospitalizations in Maceió, Brazil, using a 20-years time series (2000-2019). Weekly hospitalization rates stratified by age (children 0-4 years, adults 5-59 years, elderly ≥ 60 years), were modeled against meteorological variables-including temperature, relative humidity, precipitation, atmospheric pressure, and solar radiation

Climate Change, Urbanization, and the Emerging Urban Threat of Rift Valley Fever in Tropical and Subtropical Cities: A Narrative Review.

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a climate-sensitive mosquito-borne zoonosis long regarded as a rural, pastoral disease, yet accelerating tropical urbanization and intensifying climate variability may be reshaping its epidemiology at the urban-peri-urban interface. This narrative review examines how global climate change and urban-specific climatic conditions jointly shape RVF virus (RVFV) vector habitats, transmission, and burden in tropical and subtropical cities, synthesizing 51 of 412 English-language records identified by a structured, non-systematic search of PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, an

Risk-based framework to determine climate-informed design storms for road drainage infrastructure.

Climate change is amplifying extreme precipitation events in many regions and imposes substantial challenges for the resilience of road drainage infrastructure. Conventional design storm methodologies, which rely on historical trends of rainfall data under a stationarity assumption, may not adequately account for future climate change and variability. This study introduces a risk-based framework for determining climate-informed design storms tailored to road drainage systems. The proposed framework integrates climate model projections with risk assessment to quantify the potential impacts of f

The response of aquatic ecosystems to the interactive effects of stratospheric ozone depletion, UV radiation, and climate change.

Variations in stratospheric ozone and changes in the aquatic environment by climate change and human activity are modifying the exposure of aquatic ecosystems to UV radiation. These shifts in exposure have consequences for the distributions of species, biogeochemical cycles, and services provided by aquatic ecosystems. This Quadrennial Assessment presents the latest knowledge on the multi-faceted interactions between the effects of UV irradiation and climate change, and other anthropogenic activities, and how these conditions are changing aquatic ecosystems. Climate change results in variation

Forecasting risk of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE): using data from wildlife and climate to predict next year's number of human victims.

BACKGROUND: Over the past quarter century, the incidence of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) has increased in most European nations. However, the number of humans stricken by the disease varies from year to year. A method for predicting major increases and decreases is needed. METHODS: We assembled a 25-y database (1984-2008) of the number of human TBE victims and wildlife and climate data for the Stockholm region of Sweden, and used it to create easy-to-use mathematical models that predict increases and decreases in the number of humans stricken by TBE. RESULTS: Our best model, which uses Dece

Using deep learning models and exogenous production variables to forecast prices in the Brazilian sugarcane sector.

This study developed price forecasting models for the CEPEA/ESALQ White Crystal Sugar and Hydrous Ethanol Fuel indicators, incorporating variables related to sugarcane supply and climatic conditions. Machine learning models such as Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), Transformer, and Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) were used, along with the statistical Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) model, all incorporating exogenous variables. Among these variables are estimates from the Modular Agronomic Simulator for Sugarcane (SAMUCA), data from the National Supply Company (Conab), actual producti

Enhancing Arabica and Robusta coffee prices forecasting through machine learning approaches.

Machine learning was applied to predict Arabica and Robusta coffee prices 2-6 months ahead using climatic, production, and economic data from 2009 to 2025. SHAP analysis revealed that global and Brazilian stock levels, Vietnamese drought, Colombian rainfall, and U.S. dollar exchange rate were the most influential drivers of price variation, showing that even features with weak simple correlations can have high predictive power. We compared Multilayer Perceptron (MLP), Extreme Learning Machine (ELM), Random Forest (RF), XGBoost, and two stacking configurations (RF/XGBoost/ELM) and (RF/XGBoost),

Spatiotemporally Explicit Epidemic Model for West Nile Virus Outbreak in Germany: An Inversely Calibrated Approach.

Since the first autochthonous transmission of West Nile Virus was detected in Germany (WNV) in 2018, it has become endemic in several parts of the country and is continuing to spread due to the attainment of a suitable environment for vector occurrence and pathogen transmission. Increasing temperature associated with a changing climate has been identified as a potential driver of mosquito-borne disease in temperate regions. This scenario justifies the need for the development of a spatially and temporarily explicit model that describes the dynamics of WNV transmission in Germany. In this study

Malaria shaped human spatial organization for the past 74 thousand years.

While climate is often seen as the main driver of early humans' spatial organization in Africa, genetic and archaeological studies also suggest diseases as key selective forces in the Pleistocene. We explored whether Plasmodium falciparum-induced malaria drove habitat choice in human societies 74,000 to 5000 years ago. Combining species distribution models of mosquito complexes, palaeoclimatic and epidemiological data, we estimated an index of malaria transmission risk in sub-Saharan Africa through time. We then correlated it with an independent reconstruction of the human niche, demonstrating

Spatiotemporal analysis of hand, foot and mouth disease data using time-lag geographically-weighted regression.

Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD) is a common and widespread infectious disease. Previous studies have presented evidence that climate factors, including the monthly averages of temperature, relative humidity, air pressure, wind speed and Cumulative Risk (CR) all have a strong influence on the transmission of HFMD. In this paper, the monthly time-lag geographically- weighted regression model was constructed to investigate the spatiotemporal variations of effect of climate factors on HFMD occurrence in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China. From the spatial and temporal perspectives, the s

Multigenerational adaptation alters methylmercury uptake in cyanobacteria under warming and elevated CO2.

Climate-driven increases in atmospheric CO2 concentrations and temperature strongly regulate the physiology of phytoplankton, the primary entry point for neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg) in aquatic food webs. How multigenerational adaptation to these stressors reshapes cellular traits governing MeHg uptake remains unclear. Here, we exposed the bloom-forming cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa to long-term adaptation under elevated temperature (+5 °C) or CO2 (+580 ppm), then quantified MeHg uptake and cellular partitioning. Both stressors reduced cellular MeHg accumulation by 36% under warming

Exposing disparities in flood adaptation for equitable future interventions in the USA.

As governments race to implement new climate adaptation solutions that prepare for more frequent flooding, they must seek policies that are effective for all communities and uphold climate justice. This requires evaluating policies not only on their overall effectiveness but also on whether they benefit all communities. Using the USA as an example, we illustrate the importance of considering such disparities for flood adaptation through a FEMA dataset of  ~ 2.5 million flood insurance claims. We use CAUSALFLOW, a causal inference method based on deep generative models, to estimate the treatmen

Substrate use drives the macroevolution of mammalian tail length diversity.

External length is one of the most conspicuous aspects of mammalian tail morphological diversity. Factors that influence the evolution of tail length diversity have been proposed for particular taxa, including habitat, diet, locomotion and climate. However, no study to date has investigated such factors at a large phylogenetic scale to elucidate what drives tail length evolution in and across mammalian lineages. We use phylogenetic comparative methods to test a priori hypotheses regarding proposed factors influencing tail length, explore possible interactions between factors using evolutionary

Mapping the potential distribution of the schistosomiasis intermediate host Biomphalaria straminea in China.

Biomphalaria straminea is native to Brazil but has established a population in Guangdong Province, China. Its potential of expanding and transmitting Schistosoma mansoni is of great concern. We seek to map S. mansoni transmission potential by predicting ecological dimensions and potential distributions of B. straminea using state-of-the-art ecological niche model approaches. Two environmental datasets were selected to fit individual and ensemble niche models, together with the evaluation of niche conservatism during B. straminea invasion in China.
