World salinization with emphasis on Australia.

Salinization is the accumulation of water-soluble salts in the soil solum or regolith to a level that impacts on agricultural production, environmental health, and economic welfare. Salt-affected soils occur in more than 100 countries of the world with a variety of extents, nature, and properties. No climatic zone in the world is free from salinization, although the general perception is focused on arid and semi-arid regions. Salinization is a complex process involving the movement of salts and water in soils during seasonal cycles and interactions with groundwater. While rainfall, aeolian dep

The greenhouse effect: science and policy.

Global warming from the increase in greenhouse gases has become a major scientific and political issue during the past decade. That infrared radiation is trapped by greenhouse gases and particles in a planetary atmosphere and that the atmospheric CO(2) level has increased by some 25 percent since 1850 because of fossil fuel combustion and land use (largely deforestation) are not controversial; levels of other trace greenhouse gases such as methane and chlorofluorocarbons have increased by even larger factors. Estimates of present and future effects, however, have significant uncertainties. The

From marginalization to transformation: Examining structural injustices and policy impacts on Albania's Roma and Egyptian communities.

This study explores the role of conflict, suffering, and structural injustices in driving transformative processes within Albania's Roma and Egyptian communities, emphasizing how these experiences challenge consensus-driven approaches to social change. By analyzing systemic inequalities and power struggles through critical theory frameworks, the study highlights the importance of addressing conflict as a catalyst for transformation in the face of global challenges like climate change and the Capitalocene. The research draws on policy reviews and academic literature to examine the intersection

Exploring Parental Experiences of Virtual Reality-Based Family Interventions for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: Qualitative Insights from China.

This study explores Chinese parents' experiences with virtual reality (VR)-based family interventions for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Fifteen parents were interviewed, with data analyzed via reflexive thematic analysis. Findings reveal a process of technological mediation where parents personalized VR for caregiving routines and valued its impact on relational care. However, they also navigated challenges including the "hidden labor" of maintenance and a central paradox: while VR's structured nature improved the overall emotional climate, it sometimes caused emotional disconn

[The "Black Death" : Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever].

The Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a tick-borne viral disease that has been known for centuries. In the last years more frequent cases reflect the effects of climate change, globalization and the increasing encroachment of humans into previously unexploited areas. Humans acquire the infection by tick bites or through the slaughtering and processing of infected animals. The course of the disease can be severe and the average mortality reaches up to 30 %. It is transmissible from human to human and there is no causal treatment. Thus, CCHF meets the criteria for a highly contagious lif

Can business impact analysis play a meaningful role in planning a cost-saving programme?

Business continuity as it exists today would appear to have reached something of a plateau. Considering the history of the discipline, and how it has developed from 'simple' disaster recovery to its present position, it is clear that the trend has been to move from a reactive discipline to a proactive process. Following on from this broadly-accepted point, it is perhaps time to consider how the discipline may develop and what wider and deeper contribution the business continuity profession may make to add further value for our clients. In the present climate, it seems appropriate to consider h

β-Casein Polymorphism as a Potential Evolutionary Trade-Off: The Rise of A1 Under Intensive Selection and Its Implications for Gastrointestinal Tolerance and Agroecological Resilience.

This narrative review summarizes evidence on the bovine β-casein (CSN2) A1/A2 polymorphism as a case study of how intensive dairy selection and global gene flow can reshape allele frequencies in ways that matter for consumers, processing and agroecological resilience. We draw together evidence from (i) population-genetic surveys of CSN2 in contrasting cattle populations, including a descriptive summary of published genotype-frequency studies; (ii) controlled human studies that separate A1-containing from A2-only dairy exposure; and (iii) dairy technology and the authenticity literature relevan

Soil Respiration Dynamics and Environmental Controls Across Montane Forests of Nepal.

Soil respiration (R S) represents a major process of release of carbon dioxide (CO2) from soil to atmospheric carbon pools. Measurements of soil respiration help to understand the dynamics of carbon in ecosystems. This study examines the soil respiration rate and the effect of environmental variables in different forests along elevation gradient. This study was conducted in three distinct montane forest types distributed along an elevational gradient in the middle mountain region of Nepal, namely Schima-Castanopsis Forest, Oak Laurel Forest, and Evergreen Oak Forest. In each forest type, 10 ci

Comparative Analysis of Heat Exposure-Induced Molecular Changes in Two Turtle Species with Contrasting Thermal Adaptations.

Global climate change has heightened heat stress, threatening amphibian and reptile survival, including turtles. Although turtle species vary in heat tolerance, the molecular mechanisms behind these differences are not well understood. This study aimed to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in response to heat stress (32°C) versus normal temperature (25°C) in eight tissues (brain, heart, intestine, liver, lung, muscle, spleen, and stomach) of two turtle species: Platysternon megacephalum (low heat tolerance) and Trachemys scripta elegans (high heat tolerance) using RNA-seq. Pyrolysis temperature dependent effects of biochar on shifting fluorescence spectrum characteristics of soil dissolved organic matter under warming.

Biochar generally shift the content and molecular composition of soil dissolved organic matter (DOM) which represent the reactive components and have essential roles in coupling elemental cycling in soil. However, it is not clear how the effects of biochar on soil DOM composition is shifted under warming. This causes a knowledge gap to fully understand the fate of SOM affected by biochar application in a warming climate. To fill this gap, we conducted a simulated climate warming incubation of soil to study the influence of biochar with different pyrolysis temperatures and feedstock types on so

The hot and the cold: unravelling the variable response of plant respiration to temperature.

When predicting the effects of climate change, global carbon circulation models that include a positive feedback effect of climate warming on the carbon cycle often assume that (1) plant respiration increases exponentially with temperature (with a constant Q10) and (2) that there is no acclimation of respiration to long-term changes in temperature. In this review, we show that these two assumptions are incorrect. While Q10 does not respond systematically to elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations, other factors such as temperature, light, and water availability all have the potential to influe

Lengthened autumn growing season contributes substantially to Earth's greening.

Terrestrial ecosystems have become greener over the years through two different processes: increasing maximum greenness or extending growing season. The integrated signal of these two processes has resulted in a persistent increase in Earth's greenness, which serves as key evidence of contemporary global change. However, it remains unclear which process has predominantly driven Earth's greening, as the mechanisms underlying increased maximum greenness and growing season extension are distinct. Here, we decompose long-term satellite greenness observations and quantify the respective contributio

Unveiling the impact of anthropogenic wastes on greenhouse gas emissions from the enigmatic mangroves of Indian Sundarban.

The greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the mangrove ecosystem due to climate change have been an emerging environmental issue in the present scenario. However, the GHGs, emitted through anthropogenic causes in these vulnerable regions are often neglected. The level of soil pollution has increased due to the uncontrolled disposal of wastes from ports, ferry services, plastics, and metals, emitting huge amounts of GHGs. Here, a novel dynamic model on GHG emission was proposed for the simulation of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions using R programming languag

Micro- and nanoplastic pollution in wetland ecosystems: Ecological risks, health implications, and mitigation strategies toward a One Health future.

Wetland ecosystems are among the world's most productive and valuable environments, supporting key ecosystem functions, such as biodiversity conservation and water quality improvement, carbon sequestration, flood buffering, and climate resilience. However, the widespread occurrence of micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) has emerged as a growing threat to the ecological integrity and functioning of these ecosystems. Individual MNPs and the combined effects of these particles and coexisting microcontaminants represent a major threat to environmental and human health. Wetlands act as both sinks and se

Impacts of Coal Use on Health.

This article reviews evidence for the public health impacts of coal across the extraction, processing, use, and waste disposal continuum. Surface coal mining and processing impose public health risks on residential communities through air and water pollution. Burning coal in power plants emits more nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, particulate matter, and heavy metals per unit of energy than any other fuel source and impairs global public health. Coal ash disposal exposes communities to heavy metals and particulate matter waste. Use of coal in domestic households causes public health harm conce

Mitochondrial DNA variation and the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis phenotypes.

Mitochondria and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variation are now recognized as important factors in the development of osteoarthritis (OA). Mitochondria are the energy powerhouses of the cell, and also regulate different processes involved in the pathogenesis of OA including inflammation, apoptosis, calcium metabolism and the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS). Mitochondria contain their own genetic material, mtDNA, which evolved through the sequential accumulation of mtDNA variants to enable humans to adapt to different climates. The ROS and reactive m

Recalculating the Surface Ocean CO2 Atlas (SOCAT) to a sea surface temperature climate data record.

The Surface Ocean CO2 Atlas (SOCAT) is a global scientific community effort to collate and provide additional quality control and standardisation for surface ocean carbon dioxide (CO2) data. Each year the international marine carbon community submit any new measurements collected on research vessels, ships of opportunity, moorings, uncrewed surface vehicles and sailing yachts for inclusion in the annual update of the SOCAT database. The data synthesis effort, which published its first data product in 2011, includes a variety of systems, sampling strategies, maintenance cycles and instrument ca
