Prefrontal D2-receptor stimulation mediates flexible adaptation of economic preference hierarchies.

Advantageous economic decision making requires flexible adaptation of gain-based and loss-based preference hierarchies. However, where the neuronal blueprints for economic preference hierarchies are kept and how they may be adapted remains largely unclear. Phasic cortical dopamine release likely mediates flexible adaptation of neuronal representations. In this PET study, cortical-binding potential (BP) for the D(2)-dopamine receptor ligand [(11)C]FLB 457 was examined in healthy participants during multiple sessions of a probabilistic four-choice financial decision-making task with two behavior

Unraveling gender and racial/ethnic differences in the life course pathways from adverse childhood experiences to economic disadvantage in adulthood.

BACKGROUND: While the detrimental effects of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on health, social, and behavioral outcomes are well established, less is known about their long-term association with economic well-being. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the longitudinal relationship between ACEs and economic disadvantage in adulthood, exploring heterogeneity by gender and race/ethnicity, identifying distinct associations by ACE type, and investigating underlying mechanisms. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Data were drawn from Waves I, III, and IV of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to A

Community-Level Social Determinants and Children's School Readiness.

The current study examined links between social determinants across communities and school readiness of children attending kindergarten in each community, in literacy, math, self-regulation, and social skills. Four types of social determinants were explored: socioeconomic, crime/violence, health and well-being, and access to resources. Data came from the Oregon Kindergarten Assessment, with 40,652 entering kindergarteners attending 706 schools in the fall of 2014. The 706 schools were nested within 36 counties. Variables representing social determinants were drawn from a variety of publicly av

Experiences of structural vulnerability among exotic dancers in Baltimore, Maryland: Co-occurring social and economic antecedents of HIV/STI risk.

BACKGROUND: Women who grow up in economic scarcity often face limited opportunities for upward mobility, as a result of challenges securing stable housing, quality education, and steady employment. Chronic instability may limit the capacity of women to protect themselves against HIV/STI-related harm when engaging in sexual activity or drug use. Characterizing the structural contexts that facilitate HIV/STI risk among women are critical to effective design and implementation of drug and sexual harm reduction interventions. METHODS: Semi-structured in-depth interviews were completed with 25 fem

Impact of musculoskeletal disability limitations on the economic unmet dental needs in South Korea.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal disability (MSD) has been identified as having a negative impact on oral health. Patients with MSD have a greater burden of medical expenses and are expected to have an Economic unmet dental need (UDN). This study aimed to conduct a multifactorial analysis based on the Andersen model to determine the extent to which MSD contributes to inequitable dental care use. METHODS: This study used data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Survey VIII. The study population was 17,903 adults aged 19 years and older. All data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics for

Optimizing trigeneration energy systems: Biogas-centric methanol production via direct CO2 hydrogenation with advanced integration of PEM electrolyzer and LNG cold technology.

Biogas, a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels, addresses issues of non-renewability and accessibility. Its structural similarity to fossil fuels makes it a potent option for energy systems. With this in mind, this paper discusses a novel trigeneration system that utilizes biogas and Liquefied natural gas cooling to produce methanol, electricity, cold water, hot water, oxygen, and natural gas. The system integrates various components such as a biogas burner, Kalina cycle, organic Rankine cycle, liquefied natural gas liquid gasification cycle, proton exchange membrane electrolyzer, and metha

Coca leaf chewing as therapy for cocaine maintenance.

Major ethnic groups in Bolivia (Aymaras and Quechuas) have chewed the coca leaf for generations upon generations without health problems. The effects of coca leaf chewing produce a level of social and economic adaptation that is beyond what is normally possible. This was a major factor during the Spanish colonization of Bolivia, when forced native labor was used extensively. The cocaine base, or "pasta", may be seen as a type of South American crack. Its obligatory method of administration is smoking. A primary condition of the "pasta" smoker is compulsive drug-search behavior and addiction to

Neurodevelopmental origins of substance use disorders: Evidence from animal models of early-life adversity and addiction.

Addiction is a chronic relapsing disorder with devastating personal, societal, and economic consequences. In humans, early-life adversity (ELA) such as trauma, neglect, and resource scarcity are linked with increased risk of later-life addiction, but the brain mechanisms underlying this link are still poorly understood. Here, we focus on data from rodent models of ELA and addiction, in which causal effects of ELA on later-life responses to drugs and the neurodevelopmental mechanisms by which ELA increases vulnerability to addiction can be determined. We first summarize evidence for a link betw

The Impact of Intimate Partner Violence on Women's Physical Health: Findings From the Missouri Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a significant public health problem. It has far reaching consequences such as social and economic costs, as well as a negative impact on women's health outcomes. This study assessed the relationship between IPV and health risk factors, health behaviors, and poor mental health in Missouri women utilizing 2005 Missouri Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) data ( n = 3,110). Moderators (demographic indicators) of the relationship between IPV and health risk factors (high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and obesity) and health behaviors (physical

Improving mental health among ultra-poor children: Two-year outcomes of a cluster-randomized trial in Burkina Faso.

RATIONALE: There is limited evidence about interventions improving child mental health in francophone West Africa. Behavioral mental health interventions alone may have limited effects on children's emotional well-being in families living in abject poverty, especially in low-income countries. OBJECTIVE: This study tests the effects of economic intervention, alone and in combination with a family-focused component, on the mental health of children from ultra-poor households in rural Burkina Faso. METHODS: The three-arm cluster randomized trial included children in the age range of 10-15 years

Motivational assessment of non-treatment buprenorphine research participation in heroin dependent individuals.

BACKGROUND: Heroin abuse remains an important public health problem, particularly in economically disadvantaged areas. Insight into this problem is gained from interviewing addicted individuals. However, we lack systematic data on factors that motivate heroin users to participate in non-treatment research that offers both financial incentives (compensation) and non-financial incentives (e.g., short-term medication). AIM: To better understand the relative importance of several types of personal motivations to participate in non-treatment buprenorphine research, and to relate self-motivations t
