OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to highlight risk factors and surgeries for necrotizing fasciitis (NF) of the head and neck in the literature. NF is rare but can rapidly progress.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A literature search was done using PubMed and SCOPUS. Articles that discussed NF of the head and neck and a specific surgical technique were included. A bivariate Pearson correlation was conducted using an α level of 0.05.
RESULTS: The study included 31 articles encompassing 77 patients who presented with head and neck NF. Diabetes mellitus (23.4%) was the most common comorbidity obs

BACKGROUND: Bifidobacterium breve is an obligate anaerobic gram-positive bacillus mainly found in the gastrointestinal tract of human infants. Few cases of necrotizing fasciitis caused by B. breve have been reported.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 42-year-old Japanese man with type 2 diabetes mellitus, obesity, cellulitis of the back, and subcutaneous abscess of the right inguinal region presented with rapidly developing erythema, swelling and severe pain in the right inguinal region. Computed tomography showed widespread gas in the right leg region. Cultures of blood and a swab of the wound abscess gr

UNLABELLED: Necrotizing fasciitis is a serious soft tissue infection that causes necrosis of the subcutaneous tissues and the muscle fascia. It is associated with a high mortality rate of around 25%. Necrotizing fasciitis of the breast is a rare entity. It is a rapidly progressive life-threatening condition which can lead to sepsis with multiple organ failure. We describe a case of necrotizing fasciitis of the right breast in a 48-year-old patient diagnosed with systemic sclerosis-rheumatoid arthritis overlap syndrome.
LEARNING POINTS: Necrotizing fasciitis of the breast is a very challenging

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a severe, life-threatening soft tissue infection requiring prompt diagnosis and immediate surgical debridement. Imaging, including a computed tomography (CT) scan, can often aid in the diagnosis, though it can prolong time to treatment and diagnosis. Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is often used in the ED to identify soft tissue infections. The objective of this study is to evaluate the use of POCUS to identify NF in patients presenting to the emergency department.
METHODS: We prospectively enrolled patients who presented to the emergency department

Necrotizing fasciitis is an uncommon but often fatal disease. Given the various causes of necrotizing fasciitis, we report a case of sigmoid colon perforation caused by a toothpick subsequently resulting in fulminant necrotizing fasciitis of the retroperitoneum and right thigh successfully treated by hemipelvectomy and Hartmann´s procedure.

History and clinical findings We elaborate the case of a 72-year-old patient who presented with a painful swelling of the lower jaw in the emergency unit. Investigations and diagnosis In the clinical examination and the CT scan, a widespread cervical emphysema was found which raised suspicion for the presence of a necrotizing fasciitis of the head and neck due to aerogenic infection. Close spatial vicinity to the teeth of the left upper and lower jaw was present, so that the necrotizing fasciitis was assumed to be odontogenic. Treatment and course Based on the clinical presentation and the ima

Necrotizing fasciitis is a rapidly progressing and life-threatening soft tissue infection that often affects the abdominal wall, perineum, or extremities following surgery or trauma. It predominantly occurs in elderly and immunocompromised patients. It is rarely seen in the head and neck region. Necrotizing fasciitis of the head and neck carries high rates of morbidity and mortality. Symptoms usually develop quickly and well-timed diagnosis is critical to optimizing outcome. Diagnosis is based on a combination of clinical history, Gram staining and culture, imaging and surgical exploration. Ea

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is characterized by rapidly spreading necrosis of the soft tissue and fascia. It is rare, but can be fatal if not managed properly. The aim of this study was to discuss the morbidity and mortality in NF patients in terms of evaluating early diagnostic techniques and reconstructive options.
METHODS: Sixty-eight patients (59 male, 9 female; mean age 55.9 years; range 28 to 88 years) with localized NF who were treated between 2000 and 2010 were assessed retrospectively for age, sex, localization, time elapsed between onset of symptoms and diagnosis, predisp

The authors present a case of an extensive fulminant necrotizing fasciitis of the left flank, thigh, and lower parts of the leg treated with debridement, split-thickness skin grafting, and a giant negative pressure wound dressing covering 0.53 m( 2) or 18% of the body surface. To the authors' knowledge, this is the largest split-thickness grafted body surface successfully treated with negative pressure wound dressing documented in the literature.

OBJECTIVE: To identify if anemia, hypoalbuminemia, hypocalcemia, elevated values of creatinephosphokinase and hypoprothrombinemia are risk for mortality in necrotizing fasciitis according to the anatomical site and affected surface.
METHODS: A case and controls study was done in one prospective cohort. We documented age, associated factors, infection location, affected corporal surface, laboratory data, germs, treatment and evolution. We defined two groups of patients: deceased and survivors and we stratified in 6 subgroups according to the anatomical site.
RESULTS: 394 patients were include

Infections of the retroperitoneal space may present with insidiously vague symptoms and non-specific clinical signs. We report a case of a retroperitoneal abscess presenting as necrotizing fasciitis of the thigh from direct spread over the iliac crest. In cases of necrotizing fasciitis of the thigh with no obvious source, an intra-abdominal nidus of infection may be considered.
