We dissected 105 cadaveric shoulders to study the origin of the tendon of the long head of biceps, and examined histologically the interrelationship between the tendon, the supraglenoid tubercle and the superior labrum of the glenoid. Twenty-five biopsy specimens from the balding frontal scalp of five patients were studied. Processing included vertical and transverse (horizontal) sectioning, toluidine blue and hematoxylin and eosin staining, and fixed and frozen sectioning. Findings included decreased hair density, increased numbers of vellus hairs, and alteration of the normal follicular architecture. Transverse frozen sectioning with toluidine blue staining appeared to be a rapid and reliable tool for studying androgenic alopecia.

Frozen sections of control and coeliac jejunal mucosa were examined for HLA-DR staining. In general the staining pattern in the controls and treated coeliac patients was a patchy subapical pattern on villous tips. Untreated coeliac patients gave a different pattern with staining extending to the crypt enterocytes. Gluten challenge in three treated coeliac patients induced an altered staining pattern within 2 h.

There is growing acceptance of conservative surgery for ectopic (tubal) pregnancy. An uncommon, yet potentially fatal, complication is delayed hemorrhage due to persistence of gestational tissue. An illustrative case is presented. Routine postoperative determination of serum human chorionic gonadotropin levels and the use of frozen sections when a partial salpingectomy is carried out are recommended to identify and prevent this condition.

Frozen tissue sections from the lesions of five patients with histologically proven mycosis fungoides were examined using a specific antihuman T-cell antiserum and an indirect peroxidase staining technique. The dermal and epidermal infiltrates were shown to comprise predominantly cells bearing the specific T-cell antigen, HTLA. Two of the patients exhibited characteristic Pautrier microabscesses whose cells were exclusively T lymphocytes.

Eight patients with senile erythroderma with serum hyper IgE were studied. Characteristic laboratory findings were persistently elevated IgE levels, high peripheral-blood eosinophils, and high lactic dehydrogenase (LDH). Immunologic analysis using immunoglobulin antibodies showed frozen sections of inguinal lymph nodes to stain with anti-IgE antibody, particularly in the germinal center. Five of the patients had an atopic history, suggesting hereditary factors.

Bilateral para-aortic lymphadenectomy is routine prior to radical surgery in cancer of the cervix. A pregnant patient with invasive cancer of the cervix and ectopic decidual cell reaction in para-aortic and pelvic nodes is presented. A decidual cell reaction in frozen sections of para-aortic lymph nodes could be confused with metastatic disease. Pathogenesis of ectopic decidual cell reaction is discussed.

Cholinesterase from frozen sections of honey bee (Apis mellifera, L.) brain hydrolyzes phenylthioacetate and acetylthiocholine to give virtually identical patterns of enzyme distribution with and without the use of paraoxon. In addition, phenylthioacetate is an economical substrate for in vitro and in vivo studies of cholinesterase. Phenylthioacetate offers the advantages of being easily synthesized and lipoid soluble, and appears to penetrate membranes easily.
