Conceptual Combination in the LATL With and Without Syntactic Composition.

The relationship among syntactic, semantic, and conceptual processes in language comprehension is a central question to the neurobiology of … ich LATL conceptual combination is dependent on syntax, specifically asking whether rapid (∼200 ms) magnetoencephalography effects of conceptual combination in the LATL can occur in the absence of licit syntactic phrase closure and in the absence of a semantically plausible output for the composition. We find that such effects do occur: LATL effects of conceptual combin …

Neurophysiological Basis of Deep Brain Stimulation and Botulinum Neurotoxin Injection for Treating Oromandibular Dystonia.

Oromandibular dystonia (OMD) induces severe motor impairments, such as masticatory disturbances, dysphagia, and dysarthria, resulting in a serious decline in quality of life. Non-invasive brain-imaging techniques such as electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) are powerful approaches that can elucidate human cortical activity with high temporal resolution. Previous studies with EEG and MEG have revealed that movements in the stomatognathic system are regulated by the bilateral central cortex. Recently, in addition to the standard therapy of botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) inj…

Commonalities and differences in the spatiotemporal neural dynamics associated with automatic attentional shifts induced by gaze and arrows.

Gaze and arrows automatically trigger attentional shifts. Neuroimaging studies have identified a commonality in the spatial distribution of the neural activation involved in such attentional shifts. However, it remains unknown whether these activations occur with common temporal profiles. To investigate this issue, magnetoencephalography (MEG) was used to evaluate neural activation involved in attentional shifts induced by gaze and arrows. MEG source reconstruction analyses revealed that the superior temporal sulcus and the inferior frontal gyrus were commonly activated after 200ms, in respons…

Neuromagnetic biomarkers of visuocortical development in healthy children.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the present study was to investigate noninvasive biomarkers for visuocortical development in healthy children. METHODS: Sixty healthy children and 20 adults were studied with a whole-head magnetoencephalography (MEG) system. The adults were included to find out when the markers stabilize. Visual evoked magnetic fields (VEFs) were evoked with full-field pattern-reversal checks. RESULTS: Three response peaks were identified at 77+/-8 ms (M75), 111+/-9 ms (M100) and 150+/-11 ms (M145) for children. The latency of M75 and M100 decreased with age (p<0.01). The amplitud…

A MEG Study on the Processing of Time and Quantity: Parietal Overlap but Functional Divergence.

A common magnitude system for the processing of time and numerosity, supported by areas in the posterior parietal cortex, has been proposed by some authors. The present study aims to investigate possible intersections between the neural processing of non-numerical (time) and numerical magnitudes in the posterior parietal lobe. Using Magnetoencephalography for the comparison of brain source activations during the processing of duration and numerosity contrasts, we demonstrate parietal overlap as well as dissociations between these two dimensions. Within the parietal cortex, the main areas of ov…

Altered human voice processing in the frontal cortex and a developmental language delay in 3- to 5-year-old children with autism spectrum disorder.

The inferior frontal and superior temporal areas in the left hemisphere are crucial for human language processing. In the present study, we investigated the magnetic mismatch field (MMF) evoked by voice stimuli in 3- to 5-year-old typically developing (TD) children and children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) using child-customized magnetoencephalography (MEG). The children with ASD exhibited significantly decreased activation in the left superior temporal gyrus compared with the TD children for the MMF amplitude. If we classified the children with ASD according to the presence of a speech…

Lateralization and Binaural Interaction of Middle-Latency and Late-Brainstem Components of the Auditory Evoked Response.

We used magnetoencephalography to examine lateralization and binaural interaction of the middle-latency and late-brainstem components of the auditory evoked response (the MLR and SN10, respectively). Click stimuli were presented either monaurally, or binaurally with left- or right-leading interaural time differences (ITDs). While early MLR components, including the N19 and P30, were larger for monaural stimuli presented contralaterally (by approximately 30 and 36 % in the left and right hemispheres, respectively), later components, including the N40 and P50, were larger ipsilaterally. In contr…

The anxiety inducing paradigms such as the threat-of-shock paradigm have provided ample data on the emotional processing of predictable and … . In all NPU-conditions, we registered participants' brain responses to threat-irrelevant faces via magnetoencephalography. The data showed that increasing unpredictability of threat evoked increasing emotion regulation during face processing predominantly in dorsolateral prefrontal cortex regions during an early to mid-latency time interval. Importantly, we obtained on …

Common cortical responses evoked by appearance, disappearance and change of the human face.

BACKGROUND: To segregate luminance-related, face-related and non-specific components involved in spatio-temporal dynamics of cortical activations to a face stimulus, we recorded cortical responses to face appearance (Onset), disappearance (Offset), and change (Change) using magnetoencephalography. RESULTS: Activity in and around the primary visual cortex (V1/V2) showed luminance-dependent behavior. Any of the three events evoked activity in the middle occipital gyrus (MOG) at 150 ms and temporo-parietal junction (TPJ) at 250 ms after the onset of each event. Onset and Change activated the fus…

Atypical organisation of the auditory cortex in dyslexia as revealed by MEG.

Neuroanatomical and -radiological studies have converged to suggest an atypical organisation in the temporal bank of the left-hemispheric Sylvian fissure for dyslexia. Against the background of this finding, we applied high temporal resolution magnetoencephalography (MEG) to investigate functional aspects of the left-hemispheric auditory cortex in 11 right-handed dyslexic children (aged 8-13 years) and nine matched normal subjects (aged 8-14 years). Event-related field components during a passive oddball paradigm with pure tones and consonant-vowel syllables were evaluated. The first major pea…

Dynamic functional connectivity is modulated by the amount of p-Tau231 in blood in cognitively intact participants.

INTRODUCTION: Electrophysiology and plasma biomarkers are early and non-invasive candidates for Alzheimer's disease detection. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate changes in dynamic functional connectivity measured with magnetoencephalography, associated with the plasma pathology marker p-tau231 in unimpaired adults. METHODS: 73 individuals were included. Static and dynamic functional connectivity were calculated using leakage corrected amplitude envelope correlation. Each source's strength entropy across trials was calculated. A data-driven statistical analysis was performed to find the…

Altered Directed-Connectivity Network in Temporal Lobe Epilepsy: A MEG Study.

Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is considered a network disorder rather than a localized lesion, making it essential to study the network mechanisms underlying TLE. In this study, we constructed directed brain networks based on clinical MEG data using the Granger Causality Analysis (GCA) method, aiming to provide new insights into the network mechanisms of TLE. MEG data from 13 lTLE and 21 rTLE patients and 14 healthy controls (HCs) were analyzed. The preprocessed MEG data were used to construct directed brain networks using the GCA method and undirected brain networks using the Pearson Correlati
