Trauma-induced dentigerous cyst involving the anterior maxilla.

The dentigerous cyst is the most common developmental odontogenic cyst of the jaws. The purpose of this article was to report the case of a dentigerous cyst associated with a permanent maxillary central incisor in a 5-year-old boy who had suffered severe facial trauma at age 4. Panoramic and periapical radiographs revealed a well-defined radiolucent area with radiopaque borders surrounding the permanent maxillary left central incisor, causing displacement of the tooth buds of the permanent maxillary left lateral incisor and canine and root resorption of the deciduous maxillary left lateral inc

Acquired maxillofacial defects from motor vehicle accidents: statistics and prosthodontic considerations.

Trauma from motor vehicle accidents is one of the leading causes of death in the United States; moreover, the costs related to personal harm are only second to cancer. Head and neck injuries predominate and involve contact with the vehicle's interior (80%), contact with the vehicle's exterior (12%), or noncontact with the vehicle (8%). The patient with maxillofacial defects resulting from motor vehicle accident will have numerous soft tissue and hard tissue injuries ranging from neurologic involvement to fractures and/or avulsions of the temporomandibular joint, maxillae, mandible, teeth, and

A Case of Medialized Lateral Maxillary Sinus Wall: A Pillar of Support.

The number of maxillofacial trauma (MFT) cases attended in the Emergency Department is progressively increasing in trend, owing to the rising statistics of motor-vehicle accidents (MVAs) and urban assaults in addition to occupational-related injuries. Prompt and thorough assessment is important for accurate diagnosis and paramount treatment plans. We will be discussing a case of unusual presentation of an orbital floor fracture post-MVA which was treated conservatively based on the clinical assessments during follow-ups, supported by radiological findings. We will also briefly discuss the diff

Parthenolide reduces gene transcription of prosurvival mediators in U937 cells.

INTRODUCTION: Oral and maxillofacial (OMF) injuries encompass all forms of trauma to the tissues of the oro-facial complex, the face, jaws and mouth. In rural areas, where healthcare access is often limited, OMF injuries pose unique challenges. These challenges are compounded by environmental factors, occupational hazards and socioeconomic disparities, making rural populations particularly vulnerable to such injuries. This study explores the epidemiology and geographical variation of OMF injuries in Queensland, Australia. METHODS: Data for injury from several Queensland hospital emergency dep

Rhabdomyolysis After Prolonged Surgery: Report of 2 Cases and Review of Literature.

Rhabdomyolysis is a condition in which damaged muscle tissue breaks down and intracellular contents, including myoglobin, are released into the circulation. This produces a nonspecific clinical syndrome including electrolyte disturbances, hypovolemia, metabolic acidosis, coagulopathies, and risk of acute kidney injury. Rhabdomyolysis has been reported as a complication of prolonged surgical procedures but has rarely been reported in the oral and maxillofacial surgery literature. Early diagnosis and treatment of rhabdomyolysis are important to avoid long-term complications such as renal failure

Early versus delayed management of maxillofacial fractures: a systematic review and meta-analysis with context-based subgroup analysis.

PURPOSE: Maxillofacial fractures are common injuries caused by traffic accidents, interpersonal violence, and falls. In resource-limited or remote settings, definitive management is often delayed due to limited diagnostic facilities, lack of surgical expertise, and referral constraints, raising concerns about increased complication rates. The current literature reports conflicting results. Some studies suggest that delayed management does not significantly affect outcomes, whereas others show higher complication rates and functional impairment. Therefore, this review aims to identify the assoc

Repurposing orthodontic brackets for intermaxillary fixation in the management of paediatric mandibular fractures.

Though the incidence of maxillofacial injuries in children is lower compared to their adult counterparts, nasal bone and mandibular fractures are among the most commonly encountered. Management and treatment of mandibular fractures, in particular condylar, in this population is challenging due to anatomical and functional considerations, and conservative management remains the treatment of choice. This case report highlights an innovative technique of conservative management using orthodontic brackets and a myofunctional appliance in a patient who sustained a condylar fracture after falling fr…

Ascending aorta disruption after thoracic blunt trauma.

Blunt traumatic aortic injury is the second leading cause of death after motor vehicle accidents. The most frequent localisation of aortic lesion is the isthmus, especially in those who survived the accident. Here we report a case of blunt traumatic aortic injury with unusual localisation and modality. A 31 years old man sustained a motorcycle accident, being run over by a car. Computed tomography scan showed an atypical ascending aorta lesion, confirmed by intraoperative finding. The patient underwent emergency ascending aorta replacement with Dacron tubular graft. The patient was discharged

Evaluation and management of orofacial sensory nerve injuries.

Sensory disturbances can occur as a result of a number of dental procedures, maxillofacial injuries and pathology. The dentist is expected to inform patients of the likelihood of nerve injury prior to conducting invasive procedures. If a patient develops a sensory deficit after treatment, the practitioner should be aware of objective means of assessment of the deficit and techniques available for management. Our understanding of nerve injury, regeneration and treatment has markedly progressed in recent years. This paper provides current information on the prevention and management of neurosens…
