Hand radiographs of 100 girls representing 73% of the known Australian population of girls with Rett syndrome, age 20 years or less, were available for this study. 16 patients with complete mid-palm amputations underwent replantation between 1987 and 1991. 14 were successful. Young patients with guillotine type mid-palm amputations who could be treated with end-to-end suturing of the tendons and nerves, presented with the highest degree of function when evaluated both objectively and subjectively. In contrast, less return of function was noted in patients with high energy or avulsion type injuries of the nerves.

A new ectodermal dysplasia syndrome was reported by Bork et al. in 1987 (Hautarzt 38:342-347). The syndrome consisted of hypotrichosis with the typical SEM (scanning electron microscopy) changes of uncombable hair, retinal pigmentary dystrophy, juvenile cataract, oligodontia, brachydactyly with brachymetacarpia; it was inherited as an autosomal dominant trait. We describe a sporadic case and add further clinical findings to expand the spectrum of this rare syndrome.

The mechanical strengths of five common fixation techniques for spiral fractures have been tested. A total of 240 cadaver metacarpals and proximal phalanges were fractured and fixed by either crossed K-wires, interosseous loops, a dorsal mini-plate, a single compression screw or K-wire plus cerclage wire. We describe 7 patients with a new form of chondrodysplasia punctata. Its principal clinical manifestations are flat midface and nose, short limbs, and otherwise normal development. Consistent radiologic manifestations in the newborn infant are discrete calcific stippling, coronal clefts of vertebral bodies, short tibiae, and shortness of the 2nd and 3rd metacarpal bones. Radiologic findings in the older child include shortness of tibiae and the 3rd and 4th metacarpals.

Between 1956 and 1988 five cases of osteopoikilosis have been observed. All cases were found by chance. In two cases there were fractures: one of the femur shaft, which has been stabilized by intramedullary nailing, one of the fifth metacarpal bone which has been treated conservatively. In both cases no delay of bony union could be observed. Osteopoikilosis- as a mesenchymal lesion--seems to have no negative influence on fracture healing.

BCG-osteomyelitis is a rare but serious late complication of BCG-immunisation. Be present clinical and immunological findings in 2 children aged 9 months and 5 years, who developed BCG-osteomyelitis, following immunisation with BCG-vaccine. The authors reviewed 129 cases of fractures of the neck of the fifth metacarpal. The radiological work-up of this fractures should include an anterio-posterior film with the hand supinated, and an oblique ulnar view with the hand pronated. Two intriguing tumours in the appendicular skeleton are coined by odontogenic terms: the "adamantinomas" and "cementomas" (or "cementifying fibromas"). Both are extremely rare, mainly the latter. 100 women who had taken part in a prospective controlled trial of oestrogen therapy for prevention of post-oophorectomy bone loss were reviewed after a median follow-up period of nine years.
