In or out? Adaptive metal binding by a diphosphine-based Zr metal-organic cage.

A lantern-type Zr metal-organic cage (MOC), Zr-P2N2, has been synthesized using ditopic carboxylate linkers based on the 1,5-diaza-3,7-diphosphacyclooctane (P2N2) ligand platform. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction shows that the diphosphine groups of the P2N2 linkers point into the confined MOC cavity. Postsynthetic metalation of the diphosphine groups with Pd and Pt precursors generates the heterobimetallic cages Zr-P2N2-PdCl2 and Zr-P2N2-PtCl2. Structural characterization reveals that the linkers flip to accommodate metal chelation, resulting in outward facing metal diphosphine groups. Conver

Effective Near-Infrared Triplet Emitter Based on Hetero-Metal-Metal Interaction.

Incorporating metal-metal (M-M) interactions into excited states of closed-shell d8 and d10 metal complexes is an effective strategy in the design of near-infrared (NIR) phosphorescent materials. While extensive studies have focused on homometallic M-M-bonded excited states, the potential of heterometallic interactions remains relatively underexplored. Herein, we report a series of heterometallic Rh(I)-Pt(II) double salt complexes that achieve efficient NIR phosphorescence, with emission peak energy spanning 830-980 nm and room-temperature quantum yield up to 23%. In this system, the Rh(I) cen

Heavy metals in homestead soil: Metal fraction contents, bioaccessibility, and risk assessment.

Rapid urbanization in China has led to the disappearance of countless villages and the transformation of homestead land into cultivated land … nd (HCS), and homestead-converted grassland (HGS). Results demonstrate that the contents of the six metals exceed background values, especially for Cd and Hg, resulting in significant pollution and elevated ecological risk. Distinct from the dominant residual fraction of other metals, the extractable fraction of Cd shows the highest proportion, which als …

Revisions of Modular Metal-on-metal THA Have a High Risk of Early Complications.

BACKGROUND: The risk of early complications is high after monoblock acetabular metal-on-metal (MoM) THA revisions. However, there is a paucity of evidence regarding clinical complications after isolated head-liner exchange of modular MoM THA. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: The purposes of this study were (1) to describe the frequency of early complications after an isolated head-liner exchange revision of modular MoM THA; and (2) to determine whether patients who experienced complications or dislocation after head-liner exchanges had higher serum chromium (Cr) or cobalt (Co) ion levels than those who di

Hybridization of Metal Nanoparticles with Metal-Organic Frameworks Using Protein as Amphiphilic Stabilizer.

Here, a facile strategy is reported to efficiently hybridize metal nanoparticles (MNPs) with typical metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) of ZIF-8 (zeolitic imidazolate framework-8), which employs bovine serum albumin (BSA, a serum albumin protein derived from cows) as the amphiphilic stabilizer to increase the affinity of MNP toward MOFs. For instance, the as-synthesized PdNPs/ZIF-8 composites with diameter from 100 to 200 nm always maintain well-defined crystalline structure, and the PdNPs with small size of ∼2 nm are well-dispersed in the crystal of MOFs without serious aggregations due to the B

Can wear explain the histological variation around metal-on-metal total hips?

BACKGROUND: There is a general perception that adverse local tissue reactions in metal-on-metal hip arthroplasties are caused by wear, but the degree to which this is the case remains controversial. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: To what extent is the magnitude of wear associated with (1) the histological changes; (2) presence of metallosis; and (3) likelihood of pseudotumor formation in the periprosthetic tissues? METHODS: One hundred nineteen metal-on-metal total hip arthroplasties and hip resurfacings were selected from a retrieval collection of over 500 implants (collected between 2004 and 2012) ba

Clinical significance of heterotopic ossification after metal-on-metal total hip resurfacing.

Few studies about how heterotopic ossification (HO) affects functional outcome after metal-on-metal total hip resurfacing (MOMHR) have been reported. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the incidence and clinical significance of HO after MOMHR. We retrospectively reviewed 122 consecutive patients, who underwent MOMHR from June 2006 to October 2008, with adequate follow-up information. All patients had four weeks of aspirin (325 mg twice a day) for DVT prophylaxis and two weeks of celecoxib (400 mg once a day) for pain control. All data were collected prospectively including radiographs a

Clinical results of the conserve plus metal on metal hip resurfacing: an independent series.

The purpose of the present study was to report the clinical and radiographic results of an independent series of the Conserve Plus hip resurfacing. Five hundred forty-eight consecutive hip resurfacings were performed using the Conserve Plus prosthesis in 458 patients (350 males) with a mean age of 48.3 years (range 19 to 66). No patients were lost to follow-up. At a mean follow-up of 6.6 years (3.9 to 11.9) thirty (5.4%) hips required conversion to a total hip arthroplasty (THA) (20 males, 10 females, mean age=48.3±7.3 years). Five-year survival with as revision endpoint was 94.5% (95% CI: 93.

Early failure of the Durom prosthesis in metal-on-metal hip resurfacing in Chinese patients.

Hip resurfacing (HR) is being used increasingly as an alterative to total hip arthroplasty in osteonecrosis (ON) and ankylosing spondylitis (AS) of the hip. We performed 141 consecutive HR arthroplasties in 111 patients comprising 3 etiology groups: ON, AS, and osteoarthritis (OA). After retrospective study of retrieved components, we hypothesized that the main reason for revision was femoral loosening in the ON group (4 of 46 hips; 8.7%) and femoral-neck fracture in the AS group (3 of 58 hips; 5.2%). Necrotic areas were seen on femoral heads retrieved from patients with femoral loosening, whe

Noninflammatory pseudotumor simulating venous thrombosis after metal-on-metal hip resurfacing.

Metal-on-metal hip resurfacing has become a widespread procedure, especially in young, physically active patients. Pseudotumor is a new complication that can occur after hip resurfacing and metal-on-metal total hip arthroplasty (THA). This article presents a case of a 37-year-old woman who underwent metal-on-metal resurfacing of the left hip for symptomatic osteoarthritis. Twelve months following implantation, the patient reported painless swelling of the left lower leg. There was no clinical evidence of a deep venous thrombosis. Ultrasound and computed tomography showed a solid cystic lesion

Minimum 5-year results of modular metal-on-metal total hip arthroplasty.

This study reports minimum 5-year results of 95 hips implanted with a Pinnacle (DePuy, Warsaw, Ind) modular metal-on-metal acetabular prosthesis. Clinical scores such as the Harris Hip and Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index revealed excellent clinical outcomes at mean 6-year follow-up. With the use of large-diameter femoral heads, dislocation was rare, occurring in only 1 hip. Moreover, no acetabular and only 3 femoral osteolytic lesions were detected. Kaplan-Meier survivorship at 7 years after arthroplasty was 97.8% for the total hip arthroplasty construct and 100% for

Ten-year results of a double-heat-treated metal-on-metal hip resurfacing.

Second-generation metal-on-metal bearings were introduced as a response to the considerable incidence of wear-induced failures associated with conventional replacements, especially in young patients. We present the results at ten years of a consecutive series of patients treated using a metal-on-metal hip resurfacing. A distinct feature of the bearings used in our series was that they had been subjected to double-heat treatments during the post-casting phase of their manufacture. In the past these bearings had not been subjected to thermal treatments, making this a unique metal-on-metal bearin

The relationship between the presence of metallosis and massive infection in metal-on-metal hip replacements.

With the increased use of metal-on-metal as a bearing surface, complications and side effects are being recognised more frequently. We present a small series of a previously unreported complication, which appears specific to metal-on-metal bearing surface arthroplasties: three cases of infection in the presence of local metal debris and histological features of aseptic lymphocytic vasculitis associated lesions (ALVAL). Each case is associated with significant soft tissue loss and bone destruction to such an extent that pelvic discontinuity has occurred. We postulate that the combination of met

Surface engineering: a low wearing solution for metal-on-metal hip surface replacements.

Increased patient blood and serum levels of Co and Cr and dissemination of metal wear particles throughout organs and tissues are the primary concerns with metal-on-metal surface replacements. Surface engineering, providing a ceramic bearing surface on a metal substrate, could provide a solution. This study investigated thick (>10 microm) arc evaporation plasma vapor deposition chromium nitride (CrN) coated surface replacements in terms of wear, ion levels, and wear particles in a 10 million cycle hip simulator study, compared to a contemporary metal-on-metal surface replacement. The ion level

Pseudotumours associated with metal-on-metal hip resurfacing: 10-year Newcastle experience.

We report the incidence of pseudotumours in a single-surgeon consecutive series of 670 metal-on-metal hip resurfacings performed in the last ten years, with a minimum follow-up of one year. Two cases of pseudotumours have been found and are discussed in detail including metrology and wear analyses of the explanted components. The first was a painless, large synovial cyst in the thigh, secondary to aseptic femoral cup loosening 8 years following hip resurfacing. The second was a painful collection of wear debris in the psoas region at one year post surgery caused by impingement, resulting in ec

Osteolysis with a cementless second generation metal-on-metal cup in total hip replacement.

This study examined the long-term results of a metal-on-metal total hip replacement with a Metasul-lined cup. Twenty-nine total hip arthroplasties were performed in 27 young patients (mean age 49 years). Twenty-two patients (23 hips) were available for clinical and radiographic analysis after a mean duration of 99 months. Mean preoperative Harris hip score of 60 improved to 93 at most recent follow-up. One patient required revision of his cup for periacetabular osteolysis. Radiographic analysis showed osteolysis in another four hips. The high rate of osteolysis found in this series has not pre
