OBJECTIVES: Clinical prediction models are valuable tools that can support medical decision-making. Concise and interpretable models are more likely to be adopted in clinical practice; therefore, appropriate selection of predictor variables is often considered essential in model development. Typically, researchers specify a list of candidate predictors based on literature reviews and expert knowledge. Data-driven variable selection methods are then often used to further reduce the number of variables in the final model. However, many commonly used approaches, such as univariable selection, hav

In the neurodevelopmental model of schizophrenia, minor physical anomalies (MPAs) are considered neurodevelopmental markers of schizophrenia. To date, there has been no research to evaluate the interaction between MPAs. Our study built and used a machine learning model to predict the risk of schizophrenia based on measurements of MPA items and to investigate the potential primary and interaction effects of MPAs. The study included 470 patients with schizophrenia and 354 healthy controls. The models used are classical statistical model, Logistic Regression (LR), and machine leaning models, Deci

Studies of chronic disease often involve modeling the relationship between marker processes and disease onset or progression. The Cox regression model is perhaps the most common and convenient approach to analysis in this setting. In most cohort studies, however, biospecimens and biomarker values are only measured intermittently (e.g. at clinic visits) so Cox models often treat biomarker values as fixed at their most recently observed values, until they are updated at the next visit. We consider the implications of this convention on the limiting values of regression coefficient estimators whe

Joint modeling of longitudinal measurements and time-to-event data is used in many practical studies of medical sciences. Most of the time, particularly in clinical studies and health inquiry, there are more than one event and they compete for failing an individual. In this situation, assessing the competing risk failure time is important. In most cases, implementation of joint modeling involves complex calculations. Therefore, we propose a two-stage method for joint modeling of longitudinal measurements and competing risks (JMLC) data based on the full likelihood approach via the conditional

Neurofibromatosis 2 (NF2) is a genetic disease that occurs in approximately 1 in 40,000 live births. Almost all affected individuals develop bilateral tumors of Schwann cells that surround the vestibular nerves; these tumors are known as vestibular schwannomas (VS). Evidence from molecular genetic studies suggests that at least two mutations are involved in formation of VS in patients with NF2. Several authors proposed probabilistic models for this process in other tumors, and showed that such models are consistent with incidence data. We evaluated two different probabilistic models for a "2-h

A survey is given of continuous-time Markov chain models for ionizing radiation damage to the genome of mammalian cells. In such models, immediate damage induced by the radiation is regarded as a batch-Poisson arrival process of DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs). Enzymatic modification of the immediate damage is modeled as a Markov process similar to those described by the master equation of stochastic chemical kinetics. An illustrative example is the restitution/complete-exchange model. The model postulates that, after being induced by radiation, DSBs subsequently either undergo enzymatically m

We consider semiparametric random-effects models for recurrent events in the presence of a terminal event. The recurrent events have either a proportional marginal rate model (Cox in J Roy Stat Soc Ser B 34:406-424, 1972) or a proportional marginal mean model (Ghosh and Lin in Stat Sin 34: 663-688, 2002), while the marginal rate of the terminal event is given by a proportional model. The dependency between the recurrent events and the terminal event is described by two variants of random effects models that allow the processes to share the random effect, either fully or partly. The models are

BACKGROUND: Cross-sectional studies are useful for the estimation of prevalence of a particular event with concerns in specific populations, as in the case of diseases or other public health interests. Most of these studies have been carried out with binary binomial logistic regression model which estimates OR values that could be overestimated due to the adjustment of the model. Thus, the selection of the best multivariate model for cross-sectional studies is a priority to control the overestimation of the associations.
METHODS: We compared the precision of the estimates of the prevalence ra

PURPOSE: This paper aims to illustrate the use and interpretation of regression based on pseudo-observations for estimating risks of time-to-event outcomes in epidemiological studies.
METHODS: We use pseudo-observation based regression for estimation of contrasts in the relative and absolute risks at specific times. This relaxes the proportional hazards assumption and directly estimates relative and absolute risks without the need for secondary calculations or standardization. Statistical software is available to use this method, and we demonstrate its use in a reanalysis of the mortality ris

The segmentation of ultrasound (US) images is steadily growing in popularity, owing to the necessity of computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems and the advantages that this technique shows, such as safety and efficiency. The objective of this work is to separate the lesion from its background in US images. However, most US images contain poor quality, which is affected by the noise, ambiguous boundary, and heterogeneity. Moreover, the lesion region may be not salient amid the other normal tissues, which makes its segmentation a challenging problem. In this paper, an US image segmentation algori

Pedestrians are considered the most vulnerable road users who are directly exposed to traffic crashes. With a view to addressing the growing concern of pedestrian safety, Federal and local governments aim at reducing pedestrian-involved crashes. Nevertheless, pedestrian volume data are rarely available even though they among the most important factors to identify pedestrian safety. Thus, this study aims at identifying surrogate measures for pedestrian exposure at intersections. A two-step process is implemented: the first step is the development of Tobit and generalized linear models for predi

Most Warmblood horse studbooks aim to improve the performance in dressage and show jumping. The Dutch Royal Warmblood Studbook (KWPN) includes the highest score achieved in competition by a horse to evaluate its genetic ability of performance. However, the records collected during competition are associated with some aspects that might affect the quality of the genetic evaluation based on these records. These aspects include the influence of rider, censoring and preselection of the data. The aim of this study was to quantify the impact of rider effect, censoring and preselection on the genetic

A method of separation by gas chromatography with a flame ionisation detector was developed for quantifying cocaine and heroin in powders seized by law enforcement. The method was validated by studying parameters of calibration, trueness, precision based on trueness error (or systematic bias) and random error. Total error, which is the combination of these errors, verified its adequacy with the objectives fixed by the analyst. Accuracy profile proved to be an efficient decision tool for that purpose. Results obtained with weighted regression model were analysed and allowed to conclude that the

In vitro, single-molecule motility assays allow for the direct characterization of molecular motor properties including stepping velocity and characteristic run length. Although application of these techniques in vivo is feasible, the challenges involved in sample preparation, as well as the added complexity of the cell and its systems, result in a reduced ability to collect large datasets, as well as difficulty in simultaneous observation of the components of the motility system, namely motor and track. To address these challenges, we have developed simulations to characterize motility datase

As reported by Kalbfleisch and Prentice (1980), the generalized Wilcoxon test fails to detect a difference between the lifetime distributions of the male and female mice died from Thymic Leukemia. This failure is a result of the test's inability to detect a distributional difference when a location shift and a scale change exist simultaneously. In this article, we propose an estimator based on the minimization of an average distance between two independent quantile processes under a location-scale model. Large sample inference on the proposed estimator, with possible right-censorship, is discu

Interval-censored failure time data frequently arise in various scientific studies where each subject experiences periodical examinations for the occurrence of the failure event of interest, and the failure time is only known to lie in a specific time interval. In addition, collected data may include multiple observed variables with a certain degree of correlation, leading to severe multicollinearity issues. This work proposes a factor-augmented transformation model to analyze interval-censored failure time data while reducing model dimensionality and avoiding multicollinearity elicited by mul

The Cox hazards model (Cox, 1972, Journal of the Royal Statistical Society, Series B34, 187-220) for survival data is routinely used in many applied fields, sometimes, however, with too little emphasis on the fit of the model. A useful alternative to the Cox model is the Aalen additive hazards model (Aalen, 1980, in Lecture Notes in Statistics-2, 1-25) that can easily accommodate time changing covariate effects. It is of interest to decide which of the two models that are most appropriate to apply in a given application. This is a nontrivial problem as these two classes of models are nonnested
