Intact reading in patients with profound early visual dysfunction.

Despite substantial neuroscientific evidence for a region of visual cortex dedicated to the processing of written words, many studies continue to reject explanations of letter-by-letter (LBL) reading in terms of impaired word form representations or parallel letter processing in favour of more general deficits of visual function. In the current paper, we demonstrate that whilst LBL reading is often associated with general visual deficits, these deficits are not necessarily sufficient to cause reading impairment and have led to accounts of LBL reading which are based largely on evidence of asso

The sightless view: neural correlates of occluded objects.

The relationship between neural activity and object perception has received considerable attention using stimulus manipulations such as masking or dichoptic presentation. Here we investigate the same problem by occluding objects with an opaque screen that acts to dissociate the direct perception of the object from the awareness of its presence. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to measure brain activity when subjects viewed objects (faces and houses) that underwent occlusion and found that the response of the majority of the fusiform face area (FFA) and lateral occipital cortex is

First- and second-order stimulus length selectivity in New World monkey striate cortex.

The vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is known mainly as the potent angiogenic and vascular permeability-enhancing factor. Both processes are very effective in hypoxia. The latest studies show that VEGF has neurotrophic and neuroprotective as well as angiogenic properties. It exerts neuroprotective actions directly through the inhibition of programmed cell death (PCD), or apoptosis and the stimulation of neurogenesis. VEGF is also a mediator of multiple processes including angiogenesis, enhancing blood brain barrier permeability for glucose, antioxidants activation, which indirectly re

Multifocal topographic visual evoked potential: improving objective detection of local visual field defects.

PURPOSE: To investigate the relationships between the pattern stimulation of different parts of the visual field (up to 25 degrees of eccentricity), the electrode position, and the cortical response to improve objective detection of local visual field defects. METHODS: The human visual evoked potential (VEP) was assessed using multifocal pseudorandomly alternated pattern stimuli that were cortically scaled in size. Monopolar and bipolar electrode positions were used. The visual field was investigated up to 26 degrees of eccentricity. Twelve normal subjects and seven subjects with visual field

Electrophysiology and perimetry in acute retrobulbar neuritis.

Eighteen patients with acute retrobulbar neuritis were examined by visual field analysis and electroophthalmological recordings. The visual fields were measured to 30 degrees with the automatic perimeter Octopus 201. The pattern-evoked cortical potential showed an increased P-100 latency followed by a decrease in 12 patients during the first two weeks of the disease. This latency change cannot be explained by remyelinization. Teh positive component of the pattern ERG (P-50) was reduced in all acutely affected eyes in comparison with the fellow eye. During recovery, the amplitude of the positiv

Ensemble averaging of symbolic numbers: Criterion mean judgments beat heuristics.

Can observers compute an ensemble mean from symbolic numbers, or is averaging-like performance driven by heuristic shortcuts? We addressed this question using a criterion-based design that yields clear predictions for mean-based integration. In two experiments, participants viewed a 2 × 2 array of four Arabic digits and decided, while timed, whether the arithmetic mean of the set was smaller or larger than 5. In Experiment 1 ( N = 40 ), accuracy and response time showed a robust ensemble-distance effect: decisions were slowest and least accurate when the set mean was closest to 5 and improve

Human Gaze Behaviors Track Abstract Stimulus Categories.

Categorization, or the ability to group stimuli according to behavioral relevance, is a cornerstone of abstract cognition. Neurophysiological studies in nonhuman primates have revealed that category-selective signals are robustly encoded in oculomotor structures, including the lateral intraparietal area and superior colliculus, and that this encoding produces small, uninstructed eye movements that reflect learned category distinctions. Whether a similar phenomenon exists in humans is unknown. Here, we show that human gaze behavior encodes abstract categorical information independent of physica

Revisiting object contextual cueing: A replication study on implicit learning.

Object contextual cueing is an implicit learning paradigm in which the repeated co-occurrence of certain objects facilitates target detection, even when their spatial arrangement varies. In three experiments - where participants performed a visual search task in which the target was accompanied by either consistently repeated or randomly varying distractors - we attempted to replicate Chun and Jiang's (1999) study. In Experiment 1 (using faces; N = 25, M = 20.8 years) and Experiment 2 (using abstract figures; N = 25, M = 20.8 years), although participants became faster and more accurate over t

Encoding of semantic structure shapes temporal order memory for visual object stimuli.

Episodic memory does not perfectly reproduce past experiences but combines encoded episode-specific information and semantic knowledge in a constructive way. Previous research has shown that semantic category knowledge can bias location memory for individual items, suggesting that similar mechanisms may affect other key dimensions of episodic memory. Here, we investigated whether immediate temporal order memory is influenced by semantic relatedness between encoded items and whether this effect is modulated by semantic structure at encoding, episodic association strength and semantic typicality

Color needs luminance for visual selection during scene search.

When searching visual scenes, we use low-level visual information from objects' defining features such as color and luminance contrasts. What is the relative influence of color and luminance for saccade target selection? Basic perceptual research suggests that we are not very sensitive to peripheral color, yet color is thought to be an important basic feature guiding visual search. Previous gaze-contingent research shows that targets can be localized faster in color than in grayscale scenes, therefore the availability of color in the visual periphery indeed helps visual search. However, object

Generative modelling of continuous feature foraging reveals probabilistic representations of target distributions.

To successfully orient ourselves within noisy visual environments, we must focus our attention on items of importance, ignoring sources of distraction. This selective attending is typically thought to be facilitated by templates, tuned towards current goals. However, in real-world scenes, the appearance of objects, such as their colour or luminance, varies greatly due to perceptual interpretation and environmental factors. Therefore, tuning attentional templates probabilistically may be more efficient than tuning them to precise values. This seems particularly important during continuous tasks

Recurrent Processing Dynamics in Occluded Object Recognition Revealed by Electroencephalography and Deep Neural Networks.

The human visual system excels at recognizing occluded objects, yet the temporal dynamics of recurrent processing in this task remain unclear. Using high-temporal-resolution Electroencephalography (EEG), backward masking, and deep neural networks (DNNs), we employed a two-stage paradigm to investigate recurrent processing in occluded object recognition. In Experiment 1, we manipulated occlusion levels and applied multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA) and temporal generalization analysis (TGA) to investigate the neural differences in object recognition across varying degrees of occlusion. In Exp

Probing the use of visual search as a tool to enhance reading speed.

The reading mechanism is associated with perceptual, attentional, and oculomotor processes that partly overlap with functions attributed to the magnocellular-dorsal system. On this basis, we examined whether a home-based visual-search training program, without phonological, orthographic, or reading components, could influence reading-related performance in adult typical readers. Participants were assigned to one of three training versions that differed in the visual features of Gabor patterns to be detected (orientation, phase, or configuration), or to a no-training control group. Training per

Concurrent category-selective neural activity across the ventral occipito-temporal cortex supports a non-hierarchical view of human visual recognition.

Visual recognition is a fundamental human brain function, supported by a network of regions in the ventral occipito-temporal cortex (VOTC). This network is thought to be organized hierarchically, with definite processing stages increasing in invariance and time-course from posterior to anterior cortical regions. Here, we provide a stringent test of this view by measuring category-selective neural activity to natural images of faces across the VOTC with electrophysiological intracerebral recordings in a large human sample (N=140; >11,000 recording sites). Face-selective high frequency broadband

Methodological advances in encoding models of brain: Applying temporal response functions to magnetoencephalography for written text perception.

Recent advancements in cognitive neuroscience have expanded the tools available to study language processing beyond traditional event-related potentials (ERPs), and introduced new methods, such as the Temporal Response Function (TRF). TRF allows a nuanced investigation of brain dynamics by modeling neural responses as a convolution of stimuli with self-optimized TRF curves. While TRF has been successfully applied in auditory speech research, its application to written language processing remains unexplored. In this study, we introduce a novel approach to TRF analysis in reading using magnetoen

The temporal profile of self-prioritization.

Personal relevance exerts a powerful influence on decisional processing, such that arbitrary stimuli associated with the self are classified more rapidly than identical material linked with other people. Notwithstanding numerous demonstrations of this facilitatory effect, it remains unclear whether self-prioritization is a temporally stable outcome of decision-making. Accordingly, using a shape-label matching task in combination with computational modeling, the current experiment investigated this matter. The results were informative. First, regardless of the target of comparison (i.e., friend

Novel objects with causal event schemas elicit selective responses in tool- and hand-selective lateral occipitotemporal cortex.

Tool-selective lateral occipitotemporal cortex (LOTC) responds preferentially to images of tools (hammers, brushes) relative to non-tool objects (clocks, shoes). What drives these responses? Unlike other objects, tools exert effects on their surroundings. We tested whether LOTC responses are influenced by event schemas that denote different temporal relations. Participants learned about novel objects embedded in different event sequences. Causer objects moved prior to the appearance of an environmental event (e.g. stars), while Reactor objects moved after an event. Visual features and motor as

The cortical and subcortical correlates of face pareidolia in the macaque brain.

Face detection is a foundational social skill for primates. This vital function is thought to be supported by specialized neural mechanisms; however, although several face-selective regions have been identified in both humans and nonhuman primates, there is no consensus about which region(s) are involved in face detection. Here, we used naturally occurring errors of face detection (i.e. objects with illusory facial features referred to as examples of 'face pareidolia') to identify regions of the macaque brain implicated in face detection. Using whole-brain functional magnetic resonance imaging

How Visual Expertise Changes Representational Geometry: A Behavioral and Neural Perspective.

Many people develop expertise in specific domains of interest, such as chess, microbiology, radiology, and, the case in point in our study: ornithology. It is poorly understood to what extent such expertise alters brain function. Previous neuroimaging studies of expertise have typically focused upon the category level, for example, selectivity for birds versus nonbird stimuli. We present a multivariate fMRI study focusing upon the representational similarity among objects of expertise at the subordinate level. We compare the neural representational spaces of experts and novices to behavioral j
